I am an South African...born here...moved to Netherlands. When I was 6 and returned 10 years later... I've been here now for 10 years and realized that I know absolutely nothing about my own country. I am an cabaret show artist and just left my work to start my own show...write my own show and perform it. And so I decided to do a show on South Africa . .. I have learned so much about my heritage and feel embarrassed that this wonderful nation is so unknown. Your program helps me alot with information that I can use in my show. I want to inspire others to get to know their culture and never forgot those who paved the road before us...South Africans thank you!

Inspirational Michael - thank you. I loved your line "great leadership is not defined by taking popular decisions". It brings to mind the quote from Martin Luther King Jr. "A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a moulder of consensus." (Although he probably had an American spelling of 'molder' ;)

Thanks Stef. I'll have a look at the MLK quote. I think it is an important concept within democracy.

Brilliant breakdown of the history of our National Anthem. Thank you. Given the context what a beautiful melody merged together to create a call to Action for all South Africans, Africans and the world. God indeed bless Africa and her people.

I knew most of the anthem story... and Love the diversity of it ... being born in the 60's ... but I can see why Nkosi Sikelel is a hard act for some to swallow since it was so often associated with violence... and then takes on a sense of defiance... I am sad to have learnt that.
@baphithi

And yet it has always simply been a prayer, a cry to God for help from an oppressed people and a request for Africa to be blessed, rather than a mere song of defiance. There were plenty songs of defiance, but this one was only sung in a solemn and prayerful manner. Misunderstandings 😮😢
