Unpredictability and smart camera work without showing the killer, causing paranoia and keeping you guessing are qualities I find most important in a horror movie.

I'm so glad that, even with it being a point in Scream, there are still so many people that don't know Ms. Voorhees is the killer in the first film. It always makes these first time watching reactions entertaining when they are expecting this big brute of a man and and instead get this unassuming older woman just showing up and wrecking everything.

Technically it wasn't really a misdirect because this was the first movie and there was no expectation Jason was the killer.
@notexactly91454 жыл бұрын
@@thewinner7382 i actually meant the girl that seemed to be like the main protagonist and then she just suddenly gets killed. But even when it comes to the killer it would still work since at that time having female killers( espacially older mom types really wasnt the trend) Plus it even used the old hitchhiking trope for one of the kills and those were mainly associated with male killers.

A few answers to your questions. First, they call the girl that survives/fights the villain, the final girl. They tend to be the "good girl". The one who doesn't do drugs, doesn't drink, or even have sex. Second, Jason doesn't play a huge part in this film. He comes to play in the sequel and didn't get his hockey mask until the third movie. Third, the snake that they killed was real. This was before the Animal Welfare Act. This was to help with protecting animal "actors" and make sure that they are safe during production.
@brandonhendrix72233 жыл бұрын
What's ironic about the whole 'final girl's trope is they usually do smoke dope, drink, and or screw. Hell, in F13th 1 Alice does the first 2 and is implied she's screwing her boss and in Part 2 Jenny drinks and had sex. Even in Halloween Laurie smokes pot. In other words, the final girl concept is amusing but doesn't hold up to much scrunity. Especially when many victims don't drink, drugs, or have sex and still die.

Then I had to walk home along deserted highways and byways, late at night on my own, over three quarters of a mile! One of the scariest, and most memorable, nights of my life. Glad to see the film is still taking unwary travellers by surprise, even after all this time. Great video, guys!
@handsomeian4 жыл бұрын
The reason Friday the 13th reminds you so much of Halloween is because it was made to bank off the latter's success. Because of how popular the first Halloween was, major studios began churning out slasher movies as quickly as possible because the public was by then hooked and wanted more. These movies were so similar that major slasher/horror movie tropes were born during this period, including the Final Girl, Asshole Victim and Death by Sex. But the reason Friday the 13th and Halloween still remain classics out of all of the slashers produced during this period was because of *why* these tropes were included. The movies had a warning message for the audience behind all that gore and suspense, and weren't just horror for the sake of shocking.

Black Christmas 1974 predates Halloween and is classed at the first Western slasher film, I think you guys would like it.
@broadsword66504 жыл бұрын
I saw these films as they were released and there was a definite “arms race” to be ever more gory, ever more explicit, ever more brutal, all done within the confines of super-low budgets versus expensive practical effects. There were hundreds of these things and you are watching the best, the classics. Most of the rest are all but forgotten, while the most extreme were dubbed “video nasties” and were actually banned in the UK. Hilariously, those same films - Cannibal Corpse, I Spit On Your Grave, etc - can now be seen for free on streaming services! Hollywood saw there was money to be made and started churning out slasher horror knock-offs and quickly (as with all genre movies) they started to parody their own style and became cliched and predictable, so horror then needed a fresh take and have new techniques and ideas, so we got “Found Footage” films like The Blair Witch Project, until they too got predictable. The history of horror film making is fascinating, but the best way to learn it is by watching the films cold, with as little prior knowledge as possible - just as you are doing. I’d like you to step away from American gore fests and sample something rather different: classic British horrors from an earlier era, such as The Devil Rides Out (1968), Witchfinder General (1968), and especially The Wicker Man from 1973. It would be fascinating to see if their more atmospheric style works for you.

There’s a reason Jason is such an icon in horror and one of the top slashers in the genre, if not the top slasher. You’ll soon find out. Enjoy the journey! Yes, they actually chopped up a real snake on set. It wasn't even part of the script but the director decided that "killing" it off-screen did not have enough of a visceral impact and the animal handler that brought it was not made aware of the fact until AFTER the scene was shot. Needless to say they faced a lawsuit over property damage for the snake, but this was before and part of the reason why we now have animal cruelty laws in film making. This movie is also why we have laws involving minors in nude scenes now because Sandra at the time was only 15 years old and they had planned a full nudity scene for her character until the studio found out. However, in their defense she lied about her age so she could get the part. Lastly, the actress who played Alice was injured by the ice pick scene because the prop did not fully retract when pressed against her head.

8:18 It was. They killed a real snake for the film because it came out before they had to put "No animals were harmed in the making of this movie" disclaimers into films.

It's supposed to be more of an And Then There Were None-style mystery, which obviously doesn't work as well now that there are 13 films and Jason's as iconic as he is. There are a lot of red herrings you don't notice now, like Bill with the machete killing the snake, Steve's Jeep, Crazy Ralph in general. Steve says "hi" to the killer because it's someone he knows. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like it would have been more effective if we'd met Mrs. Voorhees earlier, then you find out it was this sweet lady. She doesn't get enough credit for being the first (as far as I know) female slasher. (Fun fact, Betsy Palmer originally despised this film and only did it because she needed a new car, but still gave a legit creepy performance.)

IMO parts 1, 2, 3 & 4 are all equally good & the best of the series, they get a bit dodgy after that. Halloween is more a psychological thriller in that it's a very slow burn with very little gore, whereas Friday The 13th was one of the earlier mainstream slasher films to focus on the gore & interesting kills.

Jason himself didn't appear with the hockey mask until part 3. Part 6 Jason lives and 8 Jason takes Manhattan are my favourites.

Love your reaction bro. This movie is definitely my childhood. I love the first four films which essentially the story. Imo u could flip flop between those films to which one is the best. Jason lives is good and new beginning is okay and has grown on me over the years but the score, tension ,kills and characters were better and Jason in 2 through 4 was terrifying and the scariest for me

No shade or anything, but what rock have you guys been under to have not seen these horror classics? One of the things I liked most about this movie was the killer. A middle aged woman driven mad by the death of her son. That was fresh, and unexpected.

Betsy Palmer the actress who plays Jason's insane mother starred in a western from the 50s called Tin Star also starring Anthony Perkins. So Jason's mother and Norman Bates once met each other.

If you wanted to check out another summer camp slasher from this era (with an EXTREMELY unexpected ending), check out "Sleepaway Camp" from 1983. It's cheesier, but quite creative (almost art-house) in its handling of the subject matter; and again, the ending knocks EVERYONE off their guard.

The reason the woman is protagonist 98% of the time is the view, like it or not, that women are more vulnerable and sympathetic so more likely to engage the audience. Whereas is a man is the protagonist, if he cowers in fear, running and screaming, he'll be perceived as a wimp and be derided or laughed at by the audience. (This only applies to slasher films. In most other horror subgenres--zombies, vampires, ghosts, etc-+ the protagonist can be male or female.)

A slight positive however is that this genre made some serious bad ass female heroines, which to be honest was pretty lacking at the time.

Unless that male lead is a kid (see Tommy Jarvis)

Yeah Jason was never intended to be the killer. The sequel was originally going to be a different scenario set around Friday the 13th but it was decided to continue the plot line of Jason coming back for revenge for his mother’s death. I would say the movies take them self seriously until about part 4 or 5. Part 6 is when it becomes a full on parody. I personally only like the first 2 films. Funnily enough I find when Jason gets the hockey mask, that’s when the films go too goofy for me.

I like the first four...2, 3 and 4 also happen on consecutive days in the movie storyline.

They had fun watching it (and it scared the crud out of 'em), yet [they] overlooked the fact that this was their original intention. Oh, well. 🤔😋

Check out 1982's The Thing. Also worth considering are The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Shining, The Fly, Child's Play, Psycho, Jaws, Alien, Psycho, Scream, The Silence of the Lambs, and Candyman.
