I would firstly push the rewind knob down to lock the cartridge in place before attempting to load the film leader into the take-up spool. That way the cartridge can't unexpectedly pop out mid loading.

It all seem so obvious but the number of times I see posts on forums from newcomers to film complaining about blank film suggests that at least some do not do these checks Thanks John

usually i would rewind a bit more so perhaps i can cheese one more frame ;)) but that's also risky as i might accidentally pull the film off from the sprocket

While the rewind knob rotating is normally a solid indicator, it does not rotate when advancing on every camera. Not sure which other cameras but this worried me when I first shot my Praktica MTL5B, and it turned out fine. I opened the back after advancing the first frame and saw it had wound on - wasted a frame but had to make sure!

Fascinating! One would think that the rewind knob would have to rotate because it's 'attached' to the film, to rewind it. Thank you for your comment.
