I have 6 DSLR's spanning about 20 years, some crop frame and some full frame, and they all still work great. As a matter of fact, sometimes don't remember which camera I used to take some of my pictures. I really see no need to upgrade to a new system when I can buy high-end dslr's and their lenses for a fraction of the cost of a new mirrorless and lenses to go with it. I just picked up a clean low-mileage 5D MkIII for stupid cheap, and photographed a wedding with it without a single issue. Win-win!

Totally in agreement with your assessment of why shooting with a DSLR is way more engaging than with a mirrorless. It's akin to writing notes with pen and paper which is oddly more satisfying than using a laptop -- at least in my experience. Why that is so perhaps has something to do with haptics. Writing longhand a word, albeit more time consuming, seems to engage more of my brain than clinically typing the same word on a keyboard. Just as vinyls and CDs have staying power, DSLRs are here to stay.

I shot from 1968 to 1998 with SLRs. After a mix of digital I went to DSLR. I do have some point and shoots but I still love the DSLR. I even have an affinity to SLRs in 6x6 where the image is reversed. I found that this very thing allowed me to still have a real world view but also allowed me to compose better. I shot video professionally from 1978-2010. You would think I might not care which one I use but I still like SLR/DSLR. I'm 71, just at old f***...

I’m so pleased someone else feels the same as me. I hate these virtual view finders and it’s killing photography for me. Using an SLR makes it real and you feel part of the experience. The art of photography is dying and people are obsessed having the latest tech. I will keep working with my D3’s and D4S for years to come as they are fast and reliable and bombproof and I love the sound of the shutter.

How the fudge is the art of photography dying? Mirrorless have unlocked so much potential in cameras today that DSLR will never be able to do. You're basically like every other DSLR owners making up excuses to justify keeping ya DSLR. Mirrorless is the now and future of cameras because they simply removed that mirror. Had Sony not forced Canon and Nikon to go Mirrorless, we would still be playing with outdated DSLR technology right now. You can keep coming up with excuses to keep your DSLR but give credit to Mirrorless when its due.

It looks like we're finally here. DSLR lenses are getting few and far between on B&H's site. Lots of "grey market" now. I'm with Marc, in that I want to be able to look out the lens not see a TV image produced by the lens. What's funny is that I had worked my way up from prosumer cameras which did just that: Put an LCD on the back and put an LCD in the view finder. Mirrorless, though it does have its advantages such as weight, feels like a step backwards to me.

I used to work in a camera shop back in college. My first DSLR was a D70 back in 2005. Beautiful camera for its time. Also, my wife knew I was lusting for full frame years later so she got a D800 new back in 2013 as a wedding gift for me. I still have those two cameras with along with all my AFD lenses. Yes, I took advantage of getting used AFD lenses and got myself an almost new 85 1.4 AFD for $450 in Kyoto, Japan back in 2018. I will say DSLR are heavy but there’s something magical and intimate about looking into an optical viewfinder. Anyway, if I ever do shift to a mirrorless, I’ll definitely go to medium format. One day, maybe. For now, I’m still happy with my D800 and I haven’t even pushed this camera to be its limit. Maybe a good used D4 would be nice also. Haha. Anyway thanks for the video!

Lag is more to do with the response of the shutter release system. As the old saying goes, “If you press the shutter release when you see the moment you already missed the shot” (unless you’re using ProCapture on an Olympus/OM System camera). It’s all about anticipation. Thankfully it’s not a general photography manifesto or law, but just Luke’s opinion and preference. I still use an SLR. I also mainly use a M4/3 mirrorless camera, and sometimes a “full frame” DSLR: whatever best suits the job or situation. Mostly it’s what I feel comfortable using. Hell, some people even love taking photos with their phones and are convinced they are the best cameras.

This may turn into a religious event. As a lifelong Pentax use, film, 67, and now dSLR I have long been to that temple of seeing the moment. It seems at times we worry that Pentax will be passed by, so many times it's epitaph has been written. But it is the love of seeing that moment that you expressed so clearly that will keep it going. The viewfinder is showing the viewer what the sensor sees not what the sensor reproduces. If you can see it with your own eye through the lens you can try to manipulate the camera to get it closer to your own interpretation. If your looking at a tv screen your just going to be able to improve what the sensor sees and you might not know any better. Anyone that's shot with a SLR will tell you mirrorless is much less enjoyable to shoot.

I agree with Luke and much prefer my wildlife photography with a DSLR and not a mirrorless. I am happy with the mirrorless, for example these last 6 weeks while in Portugal, for travel and general photography. It is lighter and smaller as a body (full frame). @@Royalbob123 that mode doesn't compensate for EVF lag. When you shoot with a mirrorless camera, the captured frame is never exactly the same as what is viewed in the EVF at that very moment. The view is available after it's processed by the processor that takes time. This is what we know as lag. Modern cameras have successfully narrowed down that lag however; it's not the same as the speed of light which is what we get on OVF.

@Tudor Ciobanu it's one of those things that you don't realize you wanted or needed till you are using it and it blows your mind how improved it is. I loved my 5DMKII then My 6DMKII.. I shoot a lot of real estate.. one company I work with wants their shots in HDR.. I shoot 5 shot brackets.. I shoot my real estate bracketed shots handheld instead of with tripod. A realtor had hired multiple ppl to shoot a house. Me for video plus some extra still shots & the realtors advert reel. The other photographer was shooting with his Nikon 750D which is a solid camera on a tripod. The photographer was liking my shots so much instead of some highlight stills he asked if I'd shoot the whole house. Which I did so they had extra coverage. I did the video & photo quicker & better than the guy who was shooting just photo on a tripod. The other guy had been their regular for years. Is this just about the Camera? No.. I have great glass & know how to be extremely efficient. Plus I know my composition and what these realtors want/like. So yes the EF glass is still great as is the 5D3 & 5D4.. but an R6/R6ii would really improve your workflow in ways you don't realize until you use one for awhile. Do I think the R6II's picture quality is better than the 5D4? Not resolution but I do notice a dynamic range improvement and certainly the low light performance is very noticeable. I'm not saying you gotta jump to mirrorless.. but I am saying it does just make things seem to flow more smoothly. You really don't realize how much I loved my 6DMKII. It almost pissed me off that the R6 was that much of an improvement. On a manual focus lens obviously you won't see the benefits of AF. And also depends on what subjects you're shooting with a manual focus lens. And with the older AF lenses.. there wasn't a "problem" so to speak. It's just a vast improvement with how it locks on. How fast it locks on.. low light is less of an issue. The RF L glass is noticeably better In many ways. Even the 100 Macro lens you get more magnification.

I have been shooting the fantastic D850 for years and the Z9 for close to one year, the Z9 is a D850 on steroids. Have hardly used the D850 in the last year since I bought the Z9, bought the Z9 mostly for video, and was also concerned about the EVF vs OVF effect and the battery life. The EVF is fantastic, NO LAG whatsoever, and it's crisp and clear, what you see "exposure wise" is what you are capturing, which means less PP work needed when it comes to highlights and shadows "I also only shoot in RAW". You can see your histogram in the EVF in real time, the same with the how dark or bright the scene is "what the sensor is capturing" in real time, your also have edge to edge AF coverage of the sensor, which is not the case with a DSLR. The one other great thing about the Z9 is that it has no shutter mechanism, which means one less mechanical part that could fail. And let's not forget that with mirrorless you no longer have to calibrate your lenses to your body to help mitigate back-focus or front-focus AF issues. In regards to battery life, the Z9 "I can only speak of the Z9" is great "thousands of shots on one charge" for a mirrorless camera. It's not as good as the D850 with the battery grip, reason is that the D850 or any other DSLR does not have to power an EVF and all the other functions that DSLRs lack compared to mirrorless cameras. Final note, the D850 is still one great stills camera, it didn't stop being great do to the Z9 or any other mirrorless camera.

Agree with everything you say - I have an early Fuji with a laggy evf that is hella annoying. When shooting pictures of people I try and split my attention between the viewfinder (for focus and composition) and an unobstructed view of my subject to get the moment I want. It’s not working very well.. My problem with dslrs comes down to 1) manual focus. Having originally shot film I liked the split prism and while focus peaking/magnification aren’t as good as the split prism, they’re better for manual focus than what dslrs offer. 2) For those of us who want to shoot video there is the issue of stabilization. Pentax seems to have had the right idea and I spose Nikon and the others could’ve followed suit but for whatever reason didn’t. Also, I like the simplicity of the dslr compared to the complexity of some of these supercomputing mirrorless cameras. I don’t feel I need a PhD in menu navigation.

That's your opinion. I know they are not for everybody, (different strokes for different folks). I kept a couple of my older DSLR, I also own a couple of film cameras (they are no longer my daily shooters). My Z6ii has a wider lens opening, its better at low light situations. Image quality is awesome. The electronic viewfinder shows what your image is going to look like before you capture it. The Z primes and zooms are off the scale. Mirrorless are the future. Life is change, growth is optional. Choose wisely. Thanks for your post.

Dumbest comment on this video so far. DSLR can never be a Mirrorless period. And Mirrorless does not want to be a DSLR. If DSLR can be mirrorless, then go silent shooting at a press conference. Use Eye-AF in portrait sessions. Capture sports players at 20+ fps. Use IBIS in DSLR to stable your video footages. Review your images in the OVF. And most of all, use all those 400 focus points in your DSLR. Otherwise, just another DSLR shooter coming up with more dumb excuses again.

It doesn’t matter what camera you have in your hand, i choose the one i make money with. All the talk of this and that, just go out and shoot wether its your job or for a hobby. Dont matter, missing shots is part of photography, messing up shots is part of photography… its about learning, creating your style and enjoying it, ive been a professional (make a living from) photographer for 6 years and still love making images. Still dont care what camera is in my hand, i have a preference down to what works for me but who cares what anyone else is using? Go out shooting! I love my d5, its been with me through so so much but i also have a z6ii and boy is that thing chief! I love the evf, in a different way to the ovf, 90% of the time i use the z6ii with superior glass but 10% i dig out the war horse… same standard of pictures, makes me my living no one would know what camera i used, but i know that each serve a purpose!

2024 already. I purchased two Canon R5 cameras and a few overly priced RF lenses. I have kept some of my Nikon SDLR cameras and a few lenses. The battery life on the ML cameras do suck. I am seriously considering selling/trading my ML cameras to get back into DSLRS where I can afford the lenses and batteries. I am now retired and just enjoy taking pictures. I have had to purchase a battery pack and numerous batteries just to take my ML for a few days up in the mountains or on vacation. I have had a Nikon D4s for years, a D700 and a D810. I should have kept my Nikon lenses and just upgraded to a D850 and forgone the ML route. It is the enjoyment of taking pictures with a camera and not a computer. If I was a pro shooter with years left maybe a ML is the way to go.

I know professionals who are only using DSLR's because it does the job and they dont want to waste money on equipment they dont need.

I started with a Nikon D60 (still works). Upgraded to Nikon D7200 which I love to this day. Since I found my father's old Canon A1 camera (44 years old) I want to get it clean professionally. I miss the old 35mm film cameras. I honestly do. I want to get a Nikon F3 and F6. They are more affordable now than when they were introduced. Love B&W photos from quality 35mm film. Looks amazing. Where did you read your source from? Mirrorless have surpassed DSLR ever since 2017. Mirrorless have achieved incredible feats that DSLR will never be able to do. Feats like IBIS, Eye-AF, 400+ focus points, Blackout-free EVF, Touch Tracking, Silent shooting, 20+ FPS, Stacked CMOS sensor, Intelligent Autofocus, and much more. Mirrorless is the future of photography and will continue to be so because by removing that mirror, Sony unlocked so much potential from cameras.

@@kamilpotato3764 Oh yes, i totally forgot about Ai autofocus!! When I played with the a7RV, it definitely helped greatly in differentiating focus from dog to human to car. Sounds like a gimmick feature but its very useful because now i dont have to set my focus area to the center and shoot the car in teh center. I can set the focus to Ai Car autofocus so no matter where the car comes out of onto the screen, it will track it right away. Same goes with my friend's dog. She just runs around and i click away as the Ai focus follows here everywhere until another dog came in the scene. And yes, no more lens calibrations at all because mirrorless cameras have closer flange distances of 20mm or less. That's the best part of switching lenses quickly!!

The lag point isn't really a point... With mirrorless you capture exactly what you see in the VF, not what happened a milli second later.. I have both types of technology but I always find myself gravitating back to the DSLR. I completely agree that even though they have cut the display lag significantly, they will never reach the speed of light. The closest thing is a Z9/Z8 (or Sony's A9/A1 series) with the stacked sensor technology and zero lag viewing, but it is still a processed version of reality. The argument for mirrorless viewfinders that irks me the most is that you get to see what the camera is picking for exposure and have an opportunity to correct this before capture. Two problems with this: 1) In the heat of the action who has time to make corrections on the fly?; 2) Since when have exposure systems gotten so bad that this is necessary? This argument is totally lame. I don't have a D4, but I do have the Df and absolutely love that 16 MP sensor. While I really liked my D700, I like my Df even more. All of this just to say you are not alone in your position on this topic. Cheers!

Cameras are all so good now that they do more things than we ever need. The post processing packages get ever more sophisticated at letting us realise our images. We can use any well made camera and craft great images. The camera companies know what we know. Mirrorless was a way of selling more cameras in a market where people were using cameras that were all easily good enough. Now that mirrorless are so powerful and the market is saturated what will they do to sell you a better mousetrap. We had the mega pixel race and then the mirrorless purge. DSLRs are still valid and not a photographic dead end. Mirrorless brings several important features to the table but it’s still dependent on photographers to craft great images. Imagine shooting 2000 frames on a shoot even that seems surreal compared to shooting film. I’ll have to see what a Nikon D4 brings to the party…

I'm not hating on mirrorless cameras. I've seen remarkable images from them. I shot a lot on low light. I use flash where allowed or applicable. However, my DSLR does good in low light situations where flash is not used. I'm glad that we have the choice and I know that great images will come for both types. I just wish I could find a dslr with great live view performance like my mirrorless. Somebody please let me know if there's a dslr with amazing live view performance. Thanks and God bless.

the more i think about it, the more i just want to get an old dslr again as my new main camera. its not about the image quality, both systems create equally awesome photos you can work professional with. dslrs are way cheaper now, the experience is more fun and more grounded and it also kind of fits my ''simple life'' mentality better. with dslrs it was so simple. you had like 2-3 brands to chose from and the lineup was also simple, entry level, midrange, a pro body and then a dedicated sports camera usually. pick what you can afford. cameras where easy to pick up, easy to understand, simple concepts and had all the features one could need to take a nice photo. nowadays with mirrorless i feel SO incredibly overwhelmed. there are like hundreds? of models to chose from, all of them seem to have some sort of drawbacks or they catering to certain niches or the lenses are huge or expensive or this or that and menus that are so deep i need to study to even get through them and so many features and ... my brain cant even keep up. its just too much.
