As a refrigeration tech, explaining taking covers off and talking someone through a service call or repair, or for those who are a diy kind of person, turning the power off before should be explained before... Some people get in a hurry, or just don't think about turning the power off because they just don't realize how bad it can hurt them if its not off before diagnosing a bad compressor.

For clarification, the part he was shaking is the overload. The other part is the start relay. Typically, if you shake the relay and hear it rattle, it is toast, not the overload. I wonder what happened to part II of the video to see if it actually worked!

My experience with the famous clicking and compressor not starting - 2010 Whirlpool model # ED5FVGXWS05, fridge and freezer were not cooling, compressor was HOT (the compressor was not turning on). I watched 12 hrs of videos about checking/shaking the start relays and listening for a clicking noise. I also watched videos on how to OHM out the compressor and it checked good. I removed the relay and heard some clicking but it didn't sound out of normal. So after talking to several appliance techs I decided to replace the start relay. I bought it from an appliance store where no refunds were allowed for electronic components ($60 gamble). No luck, relay did not work, compressor would try to start for 10 seconds then click no power). So, even though my fridge was 6 years old my compressor was bad and I was looking at $550 to fix it. Instead I rolled it to the end of the driveway, left a free craigslist post and bought a new one. Found out "maintenance" was required on your fridge every year to include vacuuming the coils, etc... Life long mechanic and never heard of that but from now on will make sure that I schedule with my wife an annual refrigerator coil vacuuming... FU Whirlpool and the $ u cost me...
@kevinvt41748 жыл бұрын
Hi Daryl, The cheap compressors that are made overseas or mexico now are crap and only last about 5-6 years this is normal and by cleaning your coil it would have helped extend the life a little more but crap is crap. Don't feel bad mine only lasted 4 years on a $2000 stainless boat anchor. My local appliance store sold me a new compressor for $149 and I installed it myself and it's been now 2 years now. When I was younger and moved out of the house my mom gave me a refrigerator that was already 20 years old and it ran for another 15 before it finely gave up the ghost they just don't make em like they use to.

If you test it, you don't need to scape the paint. Just touch the copper process tube. the terminals on the compressor are Common (where the overload is connected) Start and Run. When testing for an internal short, test all three terminals, a short can exist in any of the windings.
@fidelisnhenga-mugarisanwa35752 жыл бұрын
You took the words out of my mouth...I was also wondering why he did that after all copper is a very good conductor and is grounded or connected to earth
@Psycho92632 жыл бұрын
@@fidelisnhenga-mugarisanwa3575 I was once working on an A/C unit, and I made the mistake of feeling the low side and the compressor was NOT grounded because some dummy disconnected it and I don't know why. The compressor had an internal short, I receive such a shock, I had to feel the top of my head to see if I still had hair.
@martinlutherbling424 Жыл бұрын
2:39 if you have continuity to GROUND then there's a GROUND, not a short, A short would be between wiring / circuitry. Continuity to ground is a GROUND and would immediately blow a circuit breaker.

I removed my starter and it made a rattling noise when I shook it. I replaced it and it didn’t work. So I took off the overload and that also rattled when I shook it. However, I’ve purchased about 3 overload replacements and they all rattled as well. Is it normal for the overload relay to rattle? Either way, after changing the starter and the overload relays, the mini fridge still doesn’t work.
@duanetucker6 жыл бұрын
Same here. I suspect this guy in the video is wrong about the rattling. I bought a brand new one and it rattled just like the one I took out.

@metratone54 жыл бұрын
Sorry I have just remove this part as in other videos they said that this is where the thermostat was. Any way I did a reverse image and found out it's was actually a starter relay. Note to all if you look closely at this part it kinda resembles a plug. The rattling as this video suggest is actually the bottom metal Marked C between the N (neutral) & L (live) that's making the noise. Hold it and I bet the rattling STOPS. So that bit of information in this video is incorrect according to my findings. Now I'm going to remove the internal temperature controller and test that with my multi meter. 🤔

buzzing , clicking ocured on a 2004 amana...so compressor wasnt' starting. I cleaned all coils, ensured fan works ,and proceeded to install new Whirlpool Factory parts ( W10613606- Starter device and capacitor $120 Cdn) and compressor kicked on! Mission successful for 6 weeks, and came home after being away for a few days to warm fridge, rotten food! The same buzzing, clicking...so now I got an OHM tester and get all positive readings for continuity on compressor windings, and yes the start relay is burnt out again, as well the plug in power clip to the relay has an arced brown burnt look inside it. Here's my question....Is this a clear sign of a Bad compressor that is burning out the start relay? I guess I should have tested the compressor 6 weeks ago when I had it come on to ensure it has 120V going to it? I feel it would be foolish to spend another $120 to replace the start relay again to the fear it will burn out again in short order. Is the 3 n 1 option a stronger one than these cheap looking plastic made in mexico parts? Is there a more in depth test I could do on the compressor that involves it running to see why its burning out the parts? OR is it time to put it to the curb and go spend $2,000.00? thanks

I replaced both the overload protector / capacitor and the starter relay on my GE Hotpoint HSS25GFPD WW side-by-side fridge of 20 years yesterday, based on the info. I've been seeing on these YT videos about those 2 components going bad, which prevents the compressor from starting up. But even after replacing those parts, when I plug in and turn on the fridge, the same malfunction still occurs: compressor runs for about 5 seconds, and then shuts off, and I hear a repeated clicking noise as if the overload protector or relay is tripping the circuit (which is what it's supposed to do I guess if the electric current is too high going to the compressor). So what else can I do in this situation on my own here that won't require a "professional" repairman to come out and take a look.

You can check the thermal overload with ohms.... Its it reads shorted like when the test leads are shorted good to go... shorted should zero out the meter when connected. but you first must remove one wire from the overload protector so it will not read back in to the circuit and give a false reading... use a lower ohm setting like 100 ohms or less and then look for shorted or a zero reading. You could I guess you could anything smaller then 1K settings or less on the meter for testing this and should get a reading like the leads are shorted or meter should zero out... The start relay can be tested with the beeper... ...However a start relay of the PTC type Relay can not be tested using an ohm meter.....If your unit is clicking every few seconds to a few mintues or its buzzing and sounds louder then it did a few days ago when it was cooling then The start relay is bad... Find the part replace it and check ebay. Way cheaper then the dealer...

Done this twice so far, seems to reset itself. Also the rattling heard at times, when shaking the overload protector, doesn't necessarily mean it's bad ( the case with mine ). Good to test with a multimeter to be sure. Too much food in freezer caused shutdown, i believe...someone else got a better theory?

Sheese $40 for the parts when you could have spent $12 for a capacitive start kit and achieved the same thing.. Also continuity tests do not determine if a compressor has gone bad, You could have a locked rotor, thats why you put a clamp amp meter on it and see what the compressor draws while starting.
