Thank you so much!!!!! You saved me $2000 because my repair guy was charging me $1000 for a repair and I had decided to just buy a new fridge. Then I stumbled on this, which led to replacing the relay (with an $80 part) and we are back in action. Thanks for taking the time. It helps us all!

Just wanted to send a major thank you. I got a call from my parents asking if I could help them pick up a new fridge. Their old one(25 years old) was cool but and wasnt freezing. So their instinct was to buy a new one. I watched your video and went over to look at their fridge and pulled off the rear panel to find a rat wedged in the condenser fan preventing any movement of air. Once removed and plugged back in. Fridge ran good as new, saved them about $400.

Thank you for the fine video. Our fridge was working fine then yestertday morning, the fridge door was open ( I think the air inside got so warm it expaneded and pushed the doors open) and it was 74F inside the friidge (we keep our house at 65 in the winter). The freezer was fine (thankfully) Found your video, cleaned the coil, checked the fan and compressor were running. Moved our food over to a cooler, and over the course of a few hours, the fridge temp came down. I cancelled a call to our local applicance repair vendor. You likely saved me a $200 service call, and extended the life of my Fridge. I'll be sure to clean it out every 6 months going forward. Again, thank you so much! Jack

Thanks, Ben. My GE Cafe unit had a bad condenser fan. The condenser coils were impacted with dust and fur (thanks to our two dogs and cats) and this most likely put undue stress on the fan. After cleaning the coils and seeing the problem was not yet solved, I placed a standard "box" fan behind the frig until the replacement fan I ordered came in. The box fan immediately dropped the temperatures back to normal, so it is a great, temporary fix for everyday homeowners.

Thanks for the straightforward and easy to follow tips!! I was able to get my freezer going again because of this video. I did a thorough cleaning of the back (was almost as bad as the one you did), took off the back of the freezer compartment and melted the glacier on the coils. Although the defrost unit tested at 20 it seemed to be original equipment and showed wear so I replaced it and the defrost thermostat. So far so good and I even have water dispensing again!! It seems the glacier has been there since I moved in two 1/2 years ago!! Great job!!

@@bensappliancesandjunk I'm having the opposite issue with freezing food inside the refrigerator. I've read in certain places that could be the thermostat, damper, thermistor, etc. I'm not tech savvy enough to figure this out by taking current flow measurements or anything like that, and Im too strapped financially right now to just throw money at the problem, but it is ruining a lot of my food. Is there any kind of Macgyver type of fix that I can do which will help? Something like maybe duct tape up that front vent on the left hand side of the upper shelf where the thermistor sits behind? Or maybe take off the panel to the damper and block off some of that airway from the freezer with some duct tape? Thanks for your help. (GE gss25 xspa bs)

@bensappliancesandjunk
@bensappliancesandjunk 4 жыл бұрын
Otherwise, If its too cold in refrigerator portion, I'd get a temp gun to see exactly what temps are. There are 2 situations: Either the freezer is TOO COLD (yes, there's such a thing) and the over-cooling situation is causing too much cold air to migrate into the refrigerator portion (likely due to the cold control telling compressor to run 24/7 causing higher electric bills , OR the dampener is bad, staying open when it needs to be slightly closed) Macgyver fix for cheapest solution would be to dampen the cold output to fridge cabinet more. Older units have physical dampeners (plastic plates that activate via turn nob to reduce flow to fridge). Newer ones are motor-driven, and sadly those are common to die. Let me know which it is and I'm sure something can be whittled down as the culprit

@@bensappliancesandjunk The refrigerator is in the kitchen which is neither heated nor air conditioned. I'm in Central Florida so during the summer the temperature in the room was about 80-83°, and for the past month it has been between 60-70°. The fluctuations in the room temperature have not influenced the freezing conditions inside the refrigerator, it has remained constant. The worst freezing occurs within the middle of the refrigerator, so the top shelf and the bottom drawer don't usually freeze. I bought this refrigerator used back in April and the model of this refrigerator is a GE gss25 xspa bs, I believe it is a 2003 or 2004 model. The temperature controls are digital. In this video you can see a newer model of the same refrigerator that looks exactly the same on the top shelf (you can see it if you scroll forward to the the 01:41 mark), kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHurfIKdaLyHb6M . I'm pretty sure that the thermistor sits behind the small football shaped vent on the left hand side of the top shelf. I was thinking maybe I could cut a square piece of pillow cushion foam (I have some leftover from a project I did a while back) than stick it in the damper hole to block some of the air coming from the freezer? Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you my friend! I have to say that I found this video to be an excellent tutorial. You were simple, clear, concise, and thorough in your explanations, making it easy for me to follow along and understand the steps. One thing that stood out to me was how you started by explaining the basic functioning of a refrigerator, which helped me to understand the problem at hand. And then proceeded to take me through the step-by-step process of checking various components of the refrigerator. I appreciated how you used easy-to-understand language throughout the video, avoiding technical jargon that might have made it difficult for me to follow along. You also demonstrated a lot of patience and attention to detail, taking the time to explain each step carefully and answer any questions that I might have had. Hey, thanks so much! was checking over everything, I found there was no air coming out of the refrigerator vents, and discovered my evaporator fan froze over and wasn't spinning. I honestly didn't know that's how the fridge got its cold air, from the freezer. You taught me a lot! I'm not sure if there is a defrost issue, but after letting it melt, its cooling like a charm!! Saved me a call and repair bill. Thanks.

Thank you for this video, Ben. I have a very similar fridge to the one shown. This video has been invaluable for my troubleshooting of my fridge. Turns out my condenser fan and defrost heater had both gone bad and somehow the fridge was still running and keeping somewhat cool. These two failures on a newer fridge would have probably overloaded and failed the compressor. Mine is all fixed up now with the help of a local parts supplier and it'll probably last years to come.

I havent had a chance to put these tips to work yet, but really appreciate the easy, straightforward way you explained everything. Lots of times, videos like these make certain assumptions or dont show every little detail needed to get something broken down into components; they just skip from stating the step to showing it completed. This video broke everything down so easily and helpfully. Thank you!!!

very clear and efficient. One of the most neglected components is the condenser coil at the bottom. They get caked with fuzz. I found it easy to empty it, roll it out, and with help tip it a bit to vacuum the coil. Voila. Obviously you need several people to do this safely!

It's very important to keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. If the temperatures aren't kept at the proper settings the more chance Listeria, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, can grow, especially if the refrigerator temperature is above the safe temperature. Thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.

The one thing you missed is on these ge fridges if the compressor isn't running the first thing you check before checking the starter is the main control board behind the panel on the back of the fridge the one with all of the 1/4 screws. Unplug the power and use needle nose pliers for the plastic pins holding it in place, as well remove the wires. Look at the back of the board. Most of the time their is a relay that burns out and it's very visibly seen when you look behind the board you might even see black on the wall behind it where the relay burnt out. At this point you will need a new board. Do not just solder this connection back, you might get the fridge to temporarily work but you could damage other components and as well the relay will burn out again farely shortly.
