When I worked in a convenience store a few years ago, I made some of those with leftover mashed potatoes that would have been tossed into the garbage can. I added everything you did except an egg (we didn't have fresh eggs there) and because all I had available to cook in was deep fryer I rolled them into balls then coated them in the fish fry mix. When I was taking them out of the fryer, a young cashier came in the kitchen and asked what it was... she nor the other cashier had ever heard of them but every time I worked, they'd request I make them after I finished with my work 😂😂😂 I'm 66 and have been eating them since I was a little girl. Thank you for sharing how to make tomato gravy! I'm going to have to try making it

@@inthekitchenwithtallifaye4724 don't know how good they were. Each cashier would bring another ingredient out to put in them like onion, bacon, even leftover baked chicken lol. Nobody ever got sick from them so guess they were at least edible😂😂 and it killed hunger pains for free from leftovers saved from being tossed out

That looks so good Talli Faye, I use to make something almost the same as that. I would make the potato cakes into squares though and put them on the griddle. I loved them with creamed corn on them and I would roast a chicken to go with them. I lost the recipe years ago and was broken hearted about it, I haven't made them since and that was more than 20 years ago. I am so happy that you made these thank you so much.

I.rarely see anyone make tomato gravy, my favorite. It’s my comfort food, after I lost my husband and oldest son, I turned to tomato grave cooked with rice, a big pot. I would put it in the fridge and just dip me some out. Got me thru my first 6 months.

My sweet Daddy made tomato gravy n biscuits. So good. He’s in heaven now. I’m so thankful I would watch him make it. Your recipe is pretty close to his . We use evaporated milk instead of water. We fry the bacon and start with the grease like you do but we put the bacon back into the gravy chopped up. So good and thank you for a great video bringing great memories. My mother made potato cakes all the time when I was growing up. She used left over cold mashed potatoes, diced onion, flour, egg, S&P. I make them like that too, but I think you have the best recipe and I can’t wait to try!

Btw… we have nearly a identical gravy in German cooking. With a touch of sugar added. It’s called Paradeissauce (in my dialect anyway). 😊. Good stuff! It was typically served over a potato/noodle(think gnocchi)…(or meat). So I guess putting it on mashed potatoes isn’t that big a stretch! If I was betting I’d say that the German version is what your dish may have originated from back in the day!

I’ve made a lot of potato cakes from left over mashed potatoes. With the bacon grease, and sometimes I cook several pieces of bacon to crumble up in the potatoes, cheese and green onion, you don’t even feel like you are eating leftovers. I have never made tomato gravy to dip these potato cakes in, but I make tomato gravy when I make shrimp and cheesy grits!!! The tomato gravy over the shrimp and the best cheesy grits you ever tasted, you think you have died and gone to Heaven!!!

My hubby absolutely loves tomato gravy, especially when I make it thru the summer, bc I add a couple chopped up big tomatoes outta my garden to 1/2 can stewed tomatoes. I’ve never liked tomato gravy which is a shock bc I LOVE slicing a fresh garden tomato with a side a gravy & biscuits lol, but my family loves it. Never thought about serving this over potatoe cakes tho, I’ll try it that way ❤
