Thanks for this interview. The best thing that I heard from this is Riki is still very respectful with the family’s level of observance when she visits them. And the way she describes not to hurt her mother- that to me is very special. I am I giyur and I grew up from a very religious Catholic family- schooled from preschool to college, etc. and I left it coz I finally found the truth in being Jewish woman. I have no regrets and I will do it all over again. But HaShem are aged everything that I started my Jewish journey when my parents were both niftir. It might have been very very difficult for me to even start my journey as a Jew when they are alive… I live your podcast! I love learning about the chassidish community. I daven unsa h Sfard and my husband is askenaz and our shul is more yeshivis but our Rav is a chassidish Harav and I love learning his Torah. Your Chanel is very fascinating to me!

Addressing the issue of “kol isha-women’s voices,” girls learning musical instruments, singing at the Shabes tish (table) and education we find interesting insights. 48:10 - Riki's coloratura here stopped me in my tracks and moved me to tears. Thank you for giving her the chance to sing in this interview. It really added a lot of color and texture to what she spoke about, especially when it came to her grandparents' struggles and storytelling after the Holocaust and the suppression she faced as a young woman with a voice within a community that wanted her to be small and quiet.

During one of Frieda’s previous episodes (about Hasidic girls) I wrote in the comments that over 50 years ago when I was 14 or 15 I had a “flirtation” with a Hasidic Satmar girl in Williamsburg. For a few months her friends and my friends (Catholic boys) would chat after they got out of school. She and I would step away to talk privately leaving the other two boys and two girls a few feet away. (Soooo bad. LOL). She was very pretty and precocious. She was as interested in my life as I was in hers. It lasted a short period of time but it was cute. The commenters said it would have been impossible and that there was no way such a rebellious and adventurous Hasidic girl could exist. But, as a teenager, Riki seems to have been such a rebellious girl. I’m convinced more than ever that this memory is real and not a figment of my imagination. LOL

People can leave such weird comments. Sounds like a totally believable story to me! Sometimes people buy into a very binary view: they're all saints or all sinners. We're humans, so some people go hard at the rules, others are always dreaming of ways to break them. I hope you cherish your lovely memories.

Her voice is sublime. This has been a very interesting interview. I'm an outsider (not Jewish) and I don't mind being called a goy, but I know it's a word I shouldn't use for myself because a certain evil group of people call themselves that. It is a word I don't think a lot of non-Jewish people know. As a half-Indigenous person whose family lost their language generations ago through assimilation, Riki Rose, please continue to celebrate and protect Yiddish in song and in casual speech. It's a beautiful language and your confident, beautiful voice displays it so well.

Alright - the weekly Saturday evening smoke alarm test is done and I have a large glass of wine next to me and some time to myself. Time to watch the latest video from Frieda. 🙂 49:20 - I thought we were gonna see water coming out of her nose for a sec... 🙂 I've experience the light-headedness thing back in my teens when I sang. I think it's a mild hyperventilation. I loved it. I think it means your breath control has become so efficient that you are slightly more oxygenated than you really need to be. Yes, it's a good thing, I think. 1:18:54 - Remarkable. I think of exactly this event when I think of the whole thing around hearing a woman sing as a male. I'll leave it there. Very much enjoying this interview. 1:21:37 - This. Good question. Good answer. I really enjoyed this interview. Best to Riki Rose.

I so very much enjoyed your interview with Riki Rose! I think that she was refreshingly honest about both her appreciation of her earlier life and its challenges, both of which made her who she is today. There have been a few interviews in which I feel that the interviewees are so intent on presenting the positives of their lives that a lack of realistic candor diminishes the former, if that makes sense. My undergrad degree is in sociology and anthropology and I have always been interested in the lives of others in different cultures. and I am always learning. The world is a big place, such a rich tapestry of textures and colors and patterns. I grew up Old Order Mennonite and Old Order Amish adjacent and went through of phase of romanticizing their lives, then judging harshly some aspects, especially insofar as women's experiences are concerned. They found their way, but will always miss so much of what was deeply meaningful to them. As a teacher, I have the privilege of working with students who are new to our country, some of whom come from cultures that make adjustment to a more open, multi-cultural society more difficult. I try to be like you when discussing these things with them and appreciate you! As a Christian, I've found that every faith tradition has people who are intensely performative and rule-oriented, but yet miss the point, others who are sincere and loving and would be so in any other life, and everything in between. People are people.

When Yom-Tov Ehrlich sang his own songs, it was often hard for Satmars to understand his different Yiddish dialect. Only later were new recordings made by others using the pronunciation of the community. "Rabbi Yom-Tov Ehrlich (Hebrew: יום-טוב עהרליך) (1914-1990) was a renowned Hasidic musician, composer, lyricist, recording artist, and popular entertainer known for his popular Yiddish music albums. He was born in a small village, Kozhan Gorodok, Russian Empire, and raised in a nearby village, Davyd-Haradok, Belarus (then Poland). He survived the Holocaust in Samarkand, Soviet Union. Later, he moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York."

When I was 10 years old at Bais Yaakov in Baltimore, I was chosen to be soloist because the best singer at my school had to retire when she was bat mitzvah, 12 years old. I have sung all my life, had professional voice lessons with a leading soprano in New York City Opera - she sang with Beverly Sills, who was a famous coloratura in the 60s into the 70s. My teacher introduced me to the beautiful world of lieder - Schubert, Schuman, Mendelssohn, Brahms - this song literature I sang for Hasidic Satmar women on Shabbos and they loved the German songs, which they understood because Yiddish, their language, is so like German. So I know quite a bit about the musical limits for women - you may only sing for all female audiences.

What a wonderful interview, so delightful to hear you both reminisce and laugh together. Riki Rose is a very good singer using her lower register. Has she listened to recordings of Karen Carpenter? Karen achieved great success and fame by singing in her lower register, evidently her higher range was nothing special. But that lower range, wow!

You’ve intrigued me of Karen Carpenter.

It bears to mention that Riki’s father is the exception, not the rule. TBH my father confiscated things too, mostly to punish me, but Riki’s father takes things to a whole new level. Sadly he’s mentally unwell. In no way does he represent chassidic men/fathers.

Yes true, I related to Riki’s father confiscating things but my father was never ever Riki’s father- he’s clearly a piece of work on a whole other level.

Fantastic interview - two super women. Riki, you could have been the wedding singer at my wedding to Trevor in January, but for the fact I’ve only discovered you 6 months too late. I’m a lover of the chazzanut and adore Shulem so now I’m gonna try track down your music of this ilk. You look a very happy lady but we know actors and comediennes are great at hiding themselves from the public so I only hope your happiness is complete. Wishing you only the best in life, and to you too Frieda x

What a stunning voice that Riki has! She reminds me of a Yiddish version of Regina Spektor! Although the second song reminds me of Portuguese fado - a lament. It is hauntingly beautiful. Riki is incredibly talented.

Jill, I did put subtitles into the video, if you turn it on during song #1 you can see the translation. It's a very beautiful song.
