Two life-long friends, who played jazz together as teenagers in Austria during WW2, in defiance of Nazi laws against the performing of 'degenerate' music. Now, sadly, both gone to the Great gig in the Sky. Both left us a priceless musical legacy. RIP gentlemen and may the Angels be grooving for eternity.

you know that Gulda's desire was to play with the divine Mozart in paradise in a jam session :)

questa è una delle prove più evidenti che la musica è un'arte universale. due pianisti austriaci, uno addirittura classico, che tirano fuori dal pianoforte un boogie-woogie che ti spinge a saltare sulla sedia. genialità assoluta e talento a profusione.

These guys are grooving like demons and you guys wanna talk about hats? I love it when it's obvious the musicians are having a great time because that vibe goes out into the audience and they in turn feed it back to the players in a loop. That musician/audience connection is so important.

The hats are prob. a statement that great music is not about how you look on stage that matters with true music, but rather how you sound. F. Gulda was famous for tearing down walls that said you need to look a certain way to present the music well.

@Nastro Adhesivo lol sorry this went over your head. The point of my comment 7 years ago is that gulda was a champion for the sound and experience of that sound rather than showing off looks or perfectly fit within a mold. But… I do love street food and indulge in such if it’s good. I hope you’re having a better day today than the day you responded to me.

@@guldalex For his performance in Viktring, Gulda appeared virtually naked and produced an expansive improvisation with the Fuchs couple. Holding a large swinging saw blade in front of the microphone or hitting the strings with a spoon for several minutes was not what those classical music fans (who had come to hear Gulda's Bach interpretations) had expected. At a late hour, when the indignant guests had left the monastery, a heavy thunderstorm set in. We young people, who had persevered despite the experimental madness, took refuge under the roof of the stage. Now Gulda finally played the Well-Tempered Clavier - for us and in the middle of us long-haired people. The master and the rain and this great music and all under one roof - it was simply wonderful! I was 18.

@@hannesstuber222 Thank you so much for your exciting story! I had heard this story before and I am very pleased to hear a first-hand testimony. I'm very curious about the clothing: how exactly was Gulda dressed 😊? I know that the organizers of his concerts went crazy because Gulda wanted to play what he felt like playing on the day of the concert and he didn't want to be tied to predefined schedules...

@@guldalex it was summer and he was only wearing swimming trunks. It was the last festival that Gulda was allowed to organize. A stage was set up in the inner courtyard of the monastery building. Ornette Coleman, Dollar Brand, Charlie Haden and others played. Gulda had organized it, it was his fifth. Two years previously, Pink Floyd and Osibisa had performed. The local newspapers had criticized the long-haired visitors at the time. Too many hippies. Dollar Brand performed without a band. Solo and barefoot, in white karate robes and with a black belt, he sat at the piano and played himself into an African marketplace. On the morning of the last day, he appeared early in the morning at the campsite where the young people's tents were pitched. He had a flute with him and went chirping across the meadows, followed by a crowd of sleepy fans who stumbled tiredly after him like children stumbling after the Pied Piper of Hamelin playing the flute. :))

After this scandal Viktring was closed for 14 years, and it wasn't until 1987 that someone dared to start a festival project again.
