Joe died 2 months after this concert. did he know he only had a short time to live? If so , then it is an absolutely astounding and profound performance from a dying man. Incredible, uplifting, wonderful music. the incessant driving rhythm of Orient Express is just awesome. Each one a gifted musician totally immersed in the music. Joe hardly looks at his keyboards, always intently watching his band. i love this video. Thanks very much Jazz for All for posting this memorable event,

I first “met” Joe on Yusef Lateef’s Lp The Centaur and the Phoenix. From October 1960. Yes he’d already almost been to Berklee but went on the road with Maynard Ferguson instead. Soon Julian Adderley picked him up. Wow! But in between there he got with Lateef to make that absolutely fabulous Lp. Joe’s first recorded performance? I’m not certain about that. But one of his first for sure. What a giant of music he was.
