The last scene of Subaru was also great when reconsidering his backstory from the 1st trial and how felt like such an outsider that he stopped going to school. Being unable to make friends was the main reason he stopped going, so Otto declaring him a friend was such an unthinkable statement for his traumatized mind. Also his laugh is great, the VA does such great work performing Subaru!!

I think it also has to do with the current events as well. Roswaal and by extension Ram aren't trustworthy, Garfiel and Ryuzu are actively antagonising him, Emilia has her own problems to deal with, he isn't close to Frederica and she is an uncertainty anyway, Beatrice seems to be with the witch's cult, Rem is unconscious, Petra is a child, and Otto isn't really involved in any of this. He probably feels like he can't trust or rely on anyone so Otto's declaration caught him off guard because he had his walls up. Especially so soon after someone who he enjoyed hanging out with so much just revealed it was an act

So, correct me if I'm wrong but the Witch Miasma only becomes stronger when he starts looping at the same point over and over. After the save point moves forward, the smell gets dialed back to a minimum expression. Did I get it right? Everytime Subaru goes through his second death approximately, sensitive people around him begin to make remarks about the smell. It's kinda crazy because even if he repeats the same actions, people who can tell will react with more suspicion.
