William Wyler, who directed this movie, once said: "The trouble with Quakers is...there's not enough of them."

An elderly Quaker once gave me this advice: "Walk with those who seek the truth. Run from those who have found it."

The contrast in religious meetings is striking. The wonderful thing about Protestantism is that as a Christian you can take your choice.

This movie scene has been part of my memory since childhood. I have not set eyes on it for over 40 years until now. Wasn't there a scene where he got into a scrap with a goose, or was that another movie? I'll go look. Thank you for posting.

The Old Ways in today's people, Quakers were simple people. Simple was the best. Update yourself with a Simple Generous Day n Night. Then simple doesn't have to be poor at all.

The movie is "Friendly Persuasion", an absolutely wonderful story of a Quaker family in the early days of the Civil War. See if you can find it to watch and I guarantee you won't be sorry.

All women wore head coverings in those days. It is not an aspect of their religion. You should focus more on the content of people’s characters, on their behaviour, than on their physical appearance.

Most Quakers are socially, and often politically, liberal and they were in the Civil War period too. They believed in the equality of women and races, which was pretty radical in the 1860s. All Quakers in my experience, even relatively conservative ones, are prepared to accept anyone into their meetings and listen to what they have to say.
