Facial expressions, voice changing, body language, rapid mood swings, played a drunk guy very well (which often actors overplay), the sad scene of the first breakup with Rachel, where he cried.. he just did everything amazing. Doesn't matter if you love or hate Ross, David Schwimmer's acting created one of the greatest characters in the sitcom history.

He makes me think a bit of Jim Carey. Not in his style or delivery, exactly. His face is really... flexible, I think. It's not just that he has a super expressive face, but it USES those muscles a lot. His face can go from zero to big mad ross in less than a Mississippi. And his voice and body change to match it. It really is part of what made him so masterful in this series. It's like watching someone with DID, honestly. He just really embodies every single scene he does, and it starts with that goofball of a face.

I was just saying this too. When people think of physical comedy, they think of the three stooges, where physicality WAS the entire routine. I love that one, because I used to study martial arts. Chinese, not Japanese (Southern Style Kung Fu), but you meet people in the community, and I seem to recall laughing about this Friends joke at an event once. One Japanese martial artist (I believe he studied Karate, actually) said that "Unagi" means to react to danger like an eel. Which, I suppose makes sense. Unagi sushi IS INDEED made with eel. It's my favourite roll. This person claimed that the word "unagi" can be used to refer to any eel, as it defines the state of being eel-like, or some existential thing... And across asian martial arts, and likely in the rest of the world too, Animal behaviour plays a huge role in fighting vocabulary, as humans studied animals to learn to move more like them, if needed. Anyway, I have no idea if this unagi thing is true, I never really looked into it before, but whenever I see this episode of friends, that conversation always comes back to me. My fighting vocabulary is Chinese, not Japanese, however, so someone correct me if I got bullshat back then.,

Ross in unapologetically my favorite character of the show. Not only he’s obviously hilarious and David Schwimmer did an amazing job with the role. But also how is it possible to not have sympathy for the guy when you realize all the bad stuff that happened to him during the show?: -the 7 years long (!) messy "relationship" with Rachel (obviously) -the divorce with Carol because if you go beyond the sitcom stuff "lol his wife is a lesbian that’s hilarious" it totally destroyed him and made him unable to trust (season 3 episode 12) -the multiple divorces and accidental pregnancies which again if you go beyond the funny sitcom elements are quite sad because all Ross has ever wanted was a marriage and a family (season 8 episode 5) So yeah despite his flaws (a character without flaws is boring anyway + other main Friends characters also have huge flaws but it’s swept underneath the rug) Ross deserves more love
