To me the answer of the question “Do you love magic?” Has so much relevance to Frieren as a character. Initially she did. Deapite demons using magic to take everything from her she still loved magic. But then Flamme came along and taught her to suppress her mana and taight her magic focused on revenge, and gradually magic went from being something that brought joy to a tool hence her shift to somewhat. But then came the flower magic. The spell Flamme’s parents taught her and then she taught Frieren. That spell was the first spell of Frieren’s collection of random silly meaningless spells. Spells most others would pass over. But the key is all of them have one thing in common. They all are magics made for everyday life and silly little things outside of combat. To me this represents Frieren finding her joy in magic again through her collection of spells that aren’t for revenge. All the things Flamme couldn’t teach her. As an added note Fern in episode two gave the same answer that she somewhat loves magic. It’s for mostly the same reason for her magic was also a means to an end. Just a way to show Heiter she was capable and didn’t have to worry about her. But as she now travels with Frieren she inevitably will pick up those silly little spells as well. In her own way Frieren is doing what Flamme couldn’t, teaching her apprentice both the strength and beauty of magic.
@Majorskillissue1019 ай бұрын
Great analysis
@Raidanzoup9 ай бұрын
Yeah, a whole lotta this. To add to the first paragraph, I also think collecting folk spells and fake grimoires is a way for Frieren to actively recall and engage with the memories of her loved ones, whether it's the collective memory of the Hero Party's legacy living on through tall tales, or Frieren's own memories of Flamme as she reads whatever people have tried to pass down as her wisdom/research. And all of this just feeds into the loop of Frieren's character.
@CeliriaRose9 ай бұрын
@@Raidanzoup There’s that but I’d also say symbolically the connection of some of her random spells to her friends like the flowers to Flamme and Himmel, th sour grapes spell for Eisen, and the spell to clean statues are helping show that while these spells might seem silly and pointless they matter to someone. And that’s the beauty of Frieren’s magic is it is focused on little things that bring joy rather than just tools of war and revenge.

Her love for Magic stems from making people happy by making a field of flowers, or creating shaved ice, or turning grapes sour for a certain someone... just love this show and this episode in particular.

Something I like the most about this episode is that although there is an ongoing theme of the demons being overconfident Aura was actually very cautious. Firstly her ability to see through mana repression is special to her. Other demons can probably learn to see it too (It's suggested that Lugner was able to see through Fern's suppression at his end) but Aura's ability is very well trained. She can probably see through Fern's repression, but not Frieren's. Because she has that ability and the fact that this is the second time she met Frieren she is confident Frieren has low mana. Even then she chose to drain some of Frieren's mana just in case. On top of all of this she was cautious enough to wait to do anything until after Himmel was officially dead and when she takes opponents over she always chops off their head even if they don't have a strong will (those with a strong will can fight back even under her control, so she chops their heads off to turn them into corpses that have to obey her). All of these examples show that Aura was extremely cautious, especially for a demon, and even then she loses to Frieren. Amazing episode and character writing! Edit: Something else I just noticed. Demons supposedly train one magic for their whole lives to hone and master it as much as possible. I bet Aura specifically taught her self and trained her ability to see through mana repression for years because it is specifically tied to her main magic. Her main power is the scales and in order for Aura to know she will win she has to know her opponents mana. If she can't see through mana repression she can easily be tricked and fail. Therefore her ability to see through mana repression is specifically tied to her main ability. I said this already but the writing is so good! It all ties back together!

I know this comment is late, but I love the detail of time passing in Frieren's flashback with Flamme. After Flamme's passing, we see a montage of those 1,000 years she spent alone traveling the world which lasts roughly 50 seconds before it shows the meeting of Frieren and Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen. After they meet, images of their journey are shown and only last about 2-3 seconds, showing just how short a time those 10 years were in comparison. It's a detail not many people talk about, but I love it.

Fun fact: "Sousou no Freiren" is a play on words. In Japanese, there are 2 translations: "Frieren at the Funeral" and "Frieren, the Undertaker." Our story starts off with Frieren at a funeral; however, we soon learn of the nickname that Demons call Freiren: "The Undertaker".
@alexusman9 ай бұрын

In russian; it's "Фрирен, провожающия в последний путь". It doesn't have any play on the words, however I think it sounds nice and captures the meaning pretty well. A really rough translation to that would probably be "Frieren, accompanying to the final journey." Either way, it can be interpreted as accompanying our present party to the "Ende" and in terms of how demons call her, accompanying them to literal death.

Frieren honored Flammel by learning and using her flower spell. Now, if you go back to the earliest episodes, Frieren is talking to Fern about getting a spell that makes grapes sour, then you find out Eisen had a fondness for sour grapes, she learned a statue polishing spell, then you find out Hammel had hero statues made (which also ended up actually being for Frieren). You start to see exactly how much Frieren cared for her old companions and continue to honor them through her magic. Also, you learned this episode that suppression of mana is extremely tiring. Now you can connect Frieren, always being tired to her 24/7 training and using her mana suppression.

24:54 one thing that is interesting is that throughout history, we've known humans that gave up status and wealth, one that comes to mind is Diogenes, the cynic This opens the possibility that potentially, could exist a demon out there that could suppress their mana, although that would be as rare as finding another Diogenes, perhaps a demon inclined to do that may not even have evil tendencies, although that would be highly unlikely based on what the story established so far Anyway, it's fun to theorize on these philosophical matters
@AndragonLea8 ай бұрын
I'd say the only way I could see this happening would be with a demon that primarily preys on other animals and uses speech not to lure humans, but to scare them away from its turf. A demon like that might not want to fight humans or compete for status. They might just want to be left alone in their territory. Hiding their mana would keep competitive demons away, which would be preferable to having to fight or potentially getting subjugated and force to fight the humans. The problem here being that Flamme categorized monsters that PREY on humans and use speech for that purpose as demons. Though since every race has outliers, there might be some sort of changeling or Doppelgänger type demon that tries to hide in plain sight out there somewhere eating people unnoticed by humans or other demons. Maybe some sort of travelling merchant or drifter, always moving on before the increased disappearances become noticable, maybe even feeding on bandits, vagrants and homeless people that nobody would miss or care about if they did notice.

21:29 that thought got sadly interrupted. It is very important in my book. The episode is impressive in that it is not getting boring! (well for some it does, but they can't be helped) It says much about the writing. It is a full episode with an outcome you know. At any moment it could get boring. However it holds tension until the end with the amazing finish. And it is more so impressive since there is no flashy fight to be animated. It is just speech narration motives laid out that culminate in the point of the defeat of Aura, while intersecting with points shown in previous episodes and moments that come later. So yeah I like that talking point much. Great that you picked it up.

Aura's magic is pretty interesting, weigh soul. Notes about soul (just notes, may change in the future): Ep 4 Frieren said "with our current magic techniques we cannot observe souls after death, so we can't prove their existence" (some people somehow knew there is a record of Flamme talking to the dead but this discovery was kept hidden for a long time until they found Flamme's real grimoire about Aurole again with notes "this is the greatest discovery of the century, and it will help advance the research on souls dramatically" (ep 4) ?!). "The magic demons use is beyond human comprehension and nature itself (ep 9)", Aura's magic called Auserlese places her own soul and her target's soul onto the scales and weighs how much their mana are...the existence of soul. Some demon magic takes time to research like Zoltraak. Demon magic can be unique and beyond human comprehension, there could even be others in the future. 🤔 Even magic like Linie's magic or blood magic or wire/line magic are pretty interesting, give them more years, they can even be more threat to humanity than they are now. Human magic, demon magic, goddess magic... interesting interesting 🧐 ~ cmiiw (additions, corrections, predictions are okay, but no spoilers)

Yeah, Frieren not having any inconsistencies in her natural magic output/overflow always reminds me of when Goku wanted to naturalize the Super Saiyan state to the point that he could just stay Super while doing mundane things like eating or training. Edit: The word genius (tensai, 天才) gets brought up a lot in anime, so I just wanted to highlight that "tensai" is the heaven-sent gift of being naturally skilled and talented, while "shuusai" (秀才) is the sort of expert or scholar that works their way up to excellency through hard work and effort. I personally do think the demons did view the elves as dangerous lumps of potential, and the majority of humans as easy game. There are also some other ideas I'm entertaining, but that's from way off in future material.

Demons base their status on magical power. Magical power is derived from initial talent and steady training. Elves live ridiculously long lives. Even if all elves were completely talentless (and they're clearly not), they'd have the potential to become terrifying opponents. It makes sense that the demon king would want them eliminated. Additionally, when Flamme taught Frieren, the first thing she did was ask her to suppress her mana. She suppressed it and Flamme praised her, but she replied "all elves can do this". That might also be part of the reason.
@xiaochi90229 ай бұрын
I think Fern learned how to suppress her mana by herself or from Heiter, not directly from Frieren. I remembered in the 2nd Episode, that young little Fern was able to hide herself from being detected by others and that is a gift for a mage, according to Heiter. Heiter had travelled with Freiren for 10 years, although he is a bad priest, he is still a priest in the Hero’s party. He knows magic and it’s very likely that he's discovered Frieren’s secret. And Heiter raised Fern! He’s the one who taught Fern her first magic! He could also be the one to teach or guide Fern how to suppress her mana, or Fern just figured out by herself.

4:00 one of the main reasons I love how this show represents demons is that in here, they are seen the same as any other monster, whether it be a dragon, the einsam, etc. Monsters that can speak the human language to deceive us are demons. They disintegrate into particles like other monsters. They aren't just another species of demi humans that are misunderstood, but are still generally human like. No. In Frieren, they are legit just plain evil creatures, and nothing more. It really is a refreshing take on them in a fantasy world.
@nikolah.84729 ай бұрын
I point out that these backviews are only frierens memories so they show her reflection on her memories. From all moments we saw demons are not more evil then Humans or Elves, they are simply another faction with their own desires and ambitions. Of course they are cruel, from the events we saw, but their are nuances that show they are not pure evil. They simply dont understand our point of view. You saw as the little child killed the chief for his daughter to hand her out. She understands in the moment all judge her that she done a mistake, but it was too late now. She wanted to please the woman and make peace with her. Her problem was the Demons understanding of connections and human feelings. She simply couldnt understand what is ethical wrong to do, like a human sociopath. Elves on the other hand are not that different. They only are more social and have families. So they are friendlier to Humans and Dwarfs. They have more common ground. But you see that Frieren struggles with understanding human lifes too. Demons have simply to less connections with the other factions to change these conflicts. Killing all Elves is ethical wrong and cruel, but strategical very understandable if you see how Frieren killed Aura. Elves are the logical biggest threat to demons, because of their long life. In a war against Humans and even dwarfes, Demons have a big advantage. Demons act very logical, never hold back by ethical thinking. In the city Draht heared Frieren was a problem for the plan, so he acted with no hesitation to kill the problem, so they could continue. Lügner at the other hand was distracted as Linie died, so i think we saw a short moment were they cared for another. So we see they have connections and affection. For them its killing or getting killed. They adapt with language, because survival is crucial. That makes them bad from Frierens perspectiv, but from the view of Lügner Frieren is a cruel mass murder too.
@ryanpalyo81819 ай бұрын
they're evil bc the demon, even as a child, went and ate and killed humans. Her "mistake" was literally that she was too young to understand how to blend into humans and fully understand their emotions. Plus like I said, they are legit just monsters. They disintegrate like them, and even Lugner said Frieren was right that demons are exactly like wild beasts that can't be communicated with. I can agree with you that evil is subjective, but from all races in the Frieren universe that aren't monsters, demons are evil.@@nikolah.8472

This episode is really important in regards to Frieren and her journey with Himmel. For one part through her life in seclusion she disregards her own achievements and power which is seen when she talked about Zoltrak and we later learn that she was the major contributor for humanity to actually analyze and understand it. Similarly she could have done much more on the journey, but she didn't, she bit her time. You must deceive your friends to deceive your enemies, so she hid her power from even her party. If a mage was going around killing the greater demons and sages of destruction, they would have become more careful and she might have lost the chance to kill the demon king. She is the true hero as she suffered and bit her time till the deed could be done, Himmel is the hero the public needed. The demons call her Frieren the Slayer, those that know call her the mage of the end as she seems to find the final solutions to spells.

You have an awesome battle scenes in the prior episode with the other two demons with light battle between Frieren and Aura. So you're just hyped to see an all out confrontation. She seems very dedicated to that method of killing. I also want to point out something that you two might have guessed by now given that you've seen all of the episodes, Fern was trained by Heiter originally. She seems naturally gifted, but even though Heiter wouldn't know much in the way of magic to teach her, he is able to detect the mana flowing off of others and did know of Frieren's trick, stating that it would be useful to know so he could maybe teach it to a child of his own someday. Fern might be so good at suppressing her mana because it was most of the training that she had from Heiter from when he first met her.

I have a feeling that when this story ends, they're going to get to heaven and Frieren will see Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen and she'll smile, open her mouth and cut to black. Like the end of Your Name. Everyone will go "aaaaahhh!

I didn't see anyone else mention this but there was a giant missed callback to episode 2. Frieren was opposed to taking on Fern as an apprentice, but saw the potential when she finally located her near the cliffside. At that point, she realized how expert Fern already was a suppressing her mana. I have to assume Heiter had taught her about mana suppression, due to his learning about it from Frieren. I'm not a manga reader so have no clue if there was more exposition there, but from the context of the show, it makes sense the original party would discuss tactics to defeat demons before taking on the Demon King.

It always gets me when at the end of frieren something gruesome or bad happens, in this case aura taking herself out and then the ED comes in with "Are you alrigth..."

😮😮😮👀 ... OP !!!🎉🎆😊👍🏻 Also, did the city form where Flamme was buried ?_? ...so cool !!
I wonder if in this one moment of showing how much mana Frieren has, others from far away feel it & seek her out.

Have yall seen Chihayfuru, it's a sports anime about Japanese poetry and its similar to Haikyuu bc of the amazing sports feels you get watching sports and Haikyuu, and it has a phenomenal soundtrack. It's a Masterpiece sports anime that casual fans have never seen or heard before.

Poetic justice. Frieren forced Aura to do what she made those knights do after taking control.

Frieren. So much self-imposed loneliness. Can you imagine living with that bitterness for a thousand years? Himmel saved her. She realizes that now.
@CeliriaRose9 ай бұрын
I think you are misunderstanding Frieren. Sure she appreciates Himmel coming and taking her on an adventure but I also don’t think she particularly minded being alone. Before Himmel came along she seemed to actually be perfectly fine being alone. Even after their journey she split from the party and was alone wandering around for fifty years, then another twenty wandering on her own after Himmel’s death. She isn’t really the type just craving company and shows little sorrow or issue with being on her own.

@@CeliriaRose It's subjective, but I see it differently. Her driving purpose was to gain strength and keep it hidden. That, to me, takes some dark salt in the soul. No connections. Nothing that leaves a lasting trace of passing. Just a mediocre mage in the hills.

Frieren: "What's better than kiling a demon?" Fern "Killing a lot of demons?" Frieren: "Have a demon kill itself." Fern: "Mistress Frieren, what the fuck?"

I'm pretty much surprised about the names in this anime show, because they are all german... "Frieren" = to freeze, being cold "Flamme" = flame "Fern" = far, afar "Himmel" = sky, heaven "Lügner" = liar "Heiter" = cheerful, bright "Eisen" = iron "Stark" = strong "Draht" = wire "Linie" = line "Qual" = torment, agony, anguish the spell "Auserlese" comes from the german word "auserlesen", which is very formal word for to select (in terms of being chosen by fate or a greater power, or for some greater purpose)

Aside from all the great thing in this ep, talk about giving more details on rewatching and little details animators have put in, next ep pay attention to the op visual, you will find the frieren mana chad shot.
