Some phrases and puns don't cross the language barrier. Sousou no Frieren has multiple meanings in its original language that could never have been carried over to English in one go, so the translators chose one and hoped for the best.

This is why localization is so important. If the title received a one-to-one translation it would've lost the original title's actual meaning.

When I read the manga, it initially said "Frieren the Undertaker." It changed to Slayer later, but I won’t lie, "Undertaker" went pretty hard.

That's the weakness of that kind of mimicry: you can copy the movements, but if you lack the strength, physicality, and speed of the originator, it won't do much good in long run. It's even worse if you don't bother to test out the copied movements;, both to learn how to incorporate them into your own fighting style, and to discover any potential weaknesses. Linie lost because Stark knew how she'd respond to his attack (since she was mimicking his master), and used it to bait her into a situation where he could kill her. And because Linie lacked Eisen's strength (and also because Stark is a tank), he managed to survive what he thought would be a mutual death.

It's telling of how not only stupidly strong, but how stupidly DURABLE Stark is that he took an axe to the side, and basically shrugged it off. Man is a tank.

Stark and Fern are talented, but their lack of experience led them to underestimate themselves against stronger opponents. Though yeah the problem is much worse for the timid and emotional Stark. On the subject of Frieren vs Fern, as the series will go into later, a battle between mages is exactly as predictable or unpredictable as the combatants involved. Different mages are skilled in different ways, and the kind of magic they specialize in plays a big factor in it too. Fern and Frieren both are especially suited for fighting demons; the why will be revealed next episode! 😉
