It's a bit sad that most American reactors do not detect the full extent of Serie's sadness in the flashback scene. They fail to catch the half-second pause when she heard that Flamme died, the fact that she dodged Frieren's question of whether she's sad, the walk where her memory of the little Flamme was all over the place, the time that she said Flamme's dream was disgusting/displeasing but with a smile, and those occasional signs of sadness in her eyes when she talked in the walk. Serie talked about Flamme's life achievements like a proud parent talking about their kid. She said she only trained Flamme on a whim but she remembered her favorite spell and her dream, everything about her. (Just a side note: throughout the speech Serie called Flamme "that child" (English version only said "she"), and that sentence "but humans cannot afford to delay" in original Japanese was "but those children [like Flamme] cannot afford to delay". Serie really saw humans as kids in her adult eyes, rather than an actual competing race, but that aspect was lost in translation.) Serie just didn't want to admit that Flamme's death hit her hard. She was upset with Flamme's will, like an estranged parent upset about her kid not having visited her during life at all but only left a bunch of unpaid debts for her to settle. But she missed Flamme anyway. That walk and that talk was Serie's way of dealing with the impact of Flamme's death. She didn't want to be alone so she invited Frieren even though they didn't share the same goals and didn't get along. That monologue was essentially her eulogy to Flamme, the funeral speech that reminisced about the Flamme she knew while celebrating her achievements in life. And in a way, the final parts of the talk she was admitting that her little girl was right about her dream. Watch it again focusing on Serie's perspective and you will see much more than just her being a cold gatekeeper of magic. Serie may have torn up Flamme's will, but 1000 years later she was doing her disciple's wishes anyway.

a lot of anime fans do not understand subtext at all, it's pretty obvious that Serie saying stuff like "oh I just trained Flamme on a whim" are just her trying to protect herself from the loss of another one of her students, I don't even think this is that subtle for people to take what she said at face value

The fact that she keeps repeating the words that she trained her on a whim, makes it feel like it's something she's saying to herself to convince herself that she should not feel sad, because she does feel sad. Even if she's an elf with a long life span, Serie (though in denial) felt sad about Flamme's death and that is how she copes with it.

Little Flamme's time was probably just a day or two ago with Serie. So she remember's everything clearly. Those scene is so precious. They introduced Flamme to us in the first few episodes as this powerful Human mage. To see her here as an innocent kid running around and playing with flowers all the while knowing we are only seeing this memory because she had passed away. 😢

The chalk drawing of the battle plan during this episode was true to the final scenario that killed the Frieren clone. According to the drawing when the fight starts, Fern just has to scramble and hide near the nearest column and stay there while Frieren battles the clone and brings it to a spot were Frieren would be between the clone and Fern who is hiding behind the column. As soon as Fern sees that the clone is where she is supposed to be that is her cue to blast her with Frieren blocking the clones view of Fern below and of course without the clone detecting such a blast of full powered zoltraak coming her way since her mana detection is down during that instant as it is also casting a slightly slower spell of its own towards Frieren who sees the clones attack coming miles away because she is it and it is her. lol! Nice touch as always on the little things! Awesome anime!😊

Unfortunately it didnt make sense that the Frieren could teleport. That actually contradicts a later arc.

its Jilwer if I am correct. it just boosts up her speed, not teleport. Jilwer cannot make you teleport, just speed up your movement to an extreme.

Note that Frieren is more than a thousand years old collecting various spells from simple and weak spells to advanced and strong spells, we don't really know what other spells she have at her disposal.
