She says she will never honor Flamme's wishes to oversee mankind's magic, but here she is doing it now. She says suppressing mana is a useless spell, while she is also constantly doing it. She says she should stop taking in human disciples, but was so happy and excited when trying to recruit Fern. I think Serie thinks Frieren is a failure for the same reason she thinks Flemme is a failure. Flemme loved magic and loved discovering new magic. Frieren picked up the same love for magic and Flemme in the first flashback apologized to Frieren for ONLY teaching her how to fight and to beat the demons. Frieren is now journeying to learn all the other 'useless spells' her master made and Frieren wants to enjoy an era of peace. Serie sees magic as power and it should be done efficiently and the main purpose of magic to Serie is combat. However, Serie is just like Frieren in that they don't fully understand emotions. Frieren said the staff was trash and get a new one but fixed the staff. Serie said she wouldn't follow Flemme's wishes to train human mages but she did. Serie will say a lot but in the end she does care for her 'students/people' in a detached way. Even her criticism is most likely in Serie's mind to try to goad her preferred reaction. She wasn't 'dissing' her first first-class mage just to be 'cruel'. She was testing him since he saw Frieren's fluctuation and if he could see hers and if he would keep pushing himself and not be the timid boy. She is 'bluntly' trying to get him to change.

nah... I don't think Serie has never thought of them as a failure, nor she has ever mentioned as such. While Flamme, Frieren and Serie loves magic, they just don't see eye to eye when it comes to their belief. Serie kind of elitist, she once wanted Frieren to be her apprentice but Frieren was against it because she believes that learning magic is more fun when you discover it and should be free to everyone regardless, Flamme's idea is similar to Frieren, she believes that magic is a basic right for those who wish to purse and should be taught regardless of their social status. While Serie believes that only those who has talent should be taught and pursue magic at the utmost heights, hence why she limits the number of passers of first-class mage test.
@neerajnongmaithem3928 ай бұрын
I agree with a lot of your points but not the last one. She was not passing everyone to become a first class mage because a lot of them would die if they took the actual test which would be a waste of good future mages, it was not all about talent, she knows some are talented but are not strong enough to be a first class mage yet, she is also right about the fact that it's frieren which changed the tide which created an anomaly in the test leading to so many passing . Serie has also changed a bit from once vowing to not teach humans after flamme's death to now running the continental mage association employing thousands of mages. Serie words and actions contradicts a lot. She says frieren is not strong enough for age but then gone to say that she is one of the best when it comes to mana control in combat. @@setoace
@bigtimhsia8 ай бұрын
Serie's character is awesome and this episode shows how hypocritical she is, which is great. She keeps bringing up how useless Flamme's flower spell is but she never forgets it. Even the location of the test is her admiring flowers at a botanical garden instead of an intense throne room. Serie says practicing mana suppression is a waste of time to the First class mages but does it herself. Im guessing she does it for a different reason than Frieren, if people are frightened of her in her suppressed form, I imagine in her unsuppressed form it'd be annoying if everyone ran from the mere sight of her. To me being hypocritical humanizes her to the audience, she's not just an all-powerful perfect being (though she's damn close)
@ShadeSlayer19118 ай бұрын
I see it as less of hypocrisy, and more of a contradiction and internal conflict. She says what she says, but we can see that she never means it for real. She cared for Flamme. One doesn't just train a student on a whim, while raising her like your own child and then give a eulogy of her life after her death, remember her favorite spell, and go on to fulfill her wishes. That's the thing. She said that Flamme's wishes disgusted her and that she didn't want anything to do with them...but she still trained human mages anyway. She says one thing, and does another, because it's a front. It is very human, but it also shows how elves do have their emotions hidden underneath their cold surface.

@@THExJMC I’d reckon she already knows. I’m pretty sure besides this ep, even in the previous flashbacks, she’s been shown to be amazed by serie on more than one account. I believe even though she knows the gap in powers, she lacks the motivation and drive to close it down by more training. Because she wants to enjoy magic rather than be like serie who considers magical aptitude synonymous with strength. And I believe this is why serie is tough on frieren, she doesn’t dislike her, but imo shows her that “tough love” in hope of pushing her into training because serie realises her potential to be comparable to hers, if not more, considering frieren is younger and has more time to learn and do better than serie. I believe she just wants everyone with talent to uphold their responsibility in nurturing it to the limits. And so wants frieren to stop wasting time on spells she “loves and enjoys” and rather train for centuries so she can take serie’s place eventually.

I love the contrast between Serie and Frieren. Frieren sees the beauty in magic and wants to discover it and understand magic while Serie's ego is so high that she believes that only the best can understand magic at its highest level. Its the reason why she sees humans as below her, because she feels as if no one truly understands magic, hell not even her own kind. Frieren doesn't follow what Serie thinks and Serie hates that about Frieren which is why she believes Frieren has no drive or motivation, but its the complete opposite. Even when Serie wouldn't allow Frieren to pass an just left, you can tell by the way she responded how annoyed she is by Frieren being calm and collected and not taking the bait. However, Serie is very fair about her assessment of people and doesn't like sugarcoating things which can seem cold-hearted, but she relies on truth.
@rowanmales34308 ай бұрын
It's not the beauty or discovery of magic that Sere's doesn't understand. It's the lack of motivation for power. To Serie, magic is power, so to do things like reject being given new powerful spell simply because Frieren enjoys the process of discovering them on her own, is a complete disassociation with "powerful magic = the end goal". And since a mage, is someone who learns magic, which is power, Frieren as someone who somewhat rejects that notion is, from Series' perspective, completely wasting their potential. She tries to bait Frieren because she actively thinks an awakening of that drive would allow for more development of Frieren's potential as a mage. Now, Serie is of course totally correct, as by her own words, Frieren is far weaker than she has any right to be for her age for her magical talent. Her skill and mastery over powerful magic is supposedly so much weaker than it should be that she thinks her human apprentice, who has spent his whole human life mastering combat magic and skills, should be close to on par with Frieren in a fight despite the vast mana and age difference. I don't think there is any denying that Frieren is much much weaker due to her lack of desire for power or fighting. Of course, you can credibly argue that the question of "what is a mage" is defined by every individual, rather than general perception, and so in that sense Frieren's approach is just as valid, but for someone who sees magic as strength that isn't an acceptable viewpoint to Serie, and she actively believes Frieren changing her viewpoint would be beneficial to her as a mage.
@huealter33668 ай бұрын
Serie is a tsundere. Yes, she sees human as below her and always says cruel words, but deep down she loves her students dearly. She just hate Frieren for wasting talent and time and she is partly correct. Frieren alone can't defeat the demon king with her current strength no matter how hard she trained in concealing her mana. That's what make the hero party so special, they are not strong enough individualy (Himmel is not the true hero, Frieren does not ultilize her time and talent, etc) but together they can overcome even the Demon King army.

Powerful, but in all out fight, i dont think Lernen have a chance. I mean she does injure Frieren shoulder - breaking her defensive magic in next episode (by manga), using Zoltrak i suppose (it's dark one, the original zoltrak), but again Frieren barely trying. Like for example in Manga, Frieren fight a demon called Solitar, Frieren her self stated that their mana is equal but Solitar mana control is out of this "dimension", as in she's crazy precise in her mana control. Altough in the end Frieren her self need Fern zoltrak (just final blow), most fight was carried by Frieren. Lernen despite being talented will never win to someone like Solitar because she's a beast, she's able to injure frieren pretty bad.

@@gethina-come7885 just because Lernen wouldn’t win against Solitar doesn’t mean he would lose against Frieren, they state countless times in this series that mage fights are like a very complex game of rock-paper-scissors, it’s why Ubel easily defeats Sense but easily loses to Denken. I think the fight could go either way tbh, in the manga when he attacks Frieren she actually erects 3 barriers after the first one breaks and his attack just blows straight through all of them, to me that’s a clear indication of his strength, and Serie saying he may be able to beat Frieren is a very credible statement coming from Serie.
