Firstly, RIP Tanaka Atsuko, November 14, 1962 - August 20, 2024, the voice actress for Flamme. You've got the right idea about the important bits that are revealed about mana in this episode. It's obviously a smart strategy for us, the viewer. In their world, it's considered dishonorable to hide your strength, apparently. More-so for demons than humans, but we can assume that no other mages besides Flamme even tried to suppress their mana. As Frieren said, it gets tiring after a while. We can assume that this may also be a reason why Frieren sleeps in late, but if that were the case then Fern would be sleepy, too. Not too sure about that. Many other questions are answered from this episode, too. This is the first time we've seen what a person's mana output looks like, visually. It's entirely possible that we could have figured out this strategy before episode 10 if we were ever shown what a person's mana looked like. When demons say it's dishonorable, I am reminded of the U.S. Revolutionary War against England. Back then, it was common for armies to face off in lines and just go at each other openly. One of the ways the U.S. won was by using guerilla tactics, which the British saw as unfair. In episode 5 "Phantoms of the Dead", Frieren talks about having to shoot an illusion of her master begging for her life. She said she was used to seeing her beg for her life so she didn't feel too concerned about it. In this episode, we hear Flamme talking about not engaging enemies directly and instead "running, hiding, taking them by surprise." These were the underhanded tactics Flamme used, along with suppressing her mana to make herself appear weak. She was a survivor. The best part of this episode for me was her 1000 years alone. She was just outside that little village, training with her mana suppressed and living off the land, not really interacting with anyone. By the time Himmel, Heiter and Eisen came by, that village had become a kingdom. This shows us a huge reason as to why she's so awkward, almost cold and uncaring to everyone. Flamme told her to live in obscurity, not to be known to history until she defeated the demon king. That also explains why she doesn't flaunt her name or deeds. Not just because she's awkward in society, but because she's Flamme's secret weapon against demons. Trying to perceive Frieren's point-of-view is very difficult for us, to even think about how our own human minds would be affected by 1000 years of mostly solitude, as humans are social creatures by nature. Elves lack romantic feelings and reproductive instincts, which also implies how easy they can handle solitude. While she seems almost robotic at times, we have seen her show a vast range of emotions. Her biggest issue is with social cues with others. Assuming she was only with Flamme after her village was destroyed and then with the hero's party for 10 years, she seemed to have very limited interactions with other humans. In the current time, she's comparing old interactions to try figuring out how humans are the way they are and why she's so interested in them. This is already a long post and I feel like I'm still missing many things, but you will really see these again for yourself when you watch it all again after finishing the season. It's probably the best show I've ever re-watched that gave me a different, but still uniquely enjoyable experience.

Frieren was overwhelmingly strong. As expected, he is a friend of Himmel and his friends who defeated the Demon King. Frieren had learned from Flamme how to limit the amount of magical energy that leaves her body. Fern is the same. Because Stark is a warrior, he couldn't sense magical powers, which is why he had such a hard time defeating his enemies.

I think Stark's biggest flaw, up until this episode (I didnt watch 11 yet9), is that he’s unaware of his own capabilities. He can tank powerful attacks, like taking a hit from a demon with his abs, and defeat a dragon in seconds, but he still shakes and fears before fights. While being cautious is smart in this world, it also seems to affect his judgment during battles. I’d love to see him grow more confident as he realizes his strength, though I don’t want him to become fearless-after all, a little fear is key for survival.

@@Arengan I agree that humans need a little bit of fear. In episode 6, Eisen said, "Being afraid isn't a bad thing." I think this applies to us in real life as well. Excessive confidence can destroy you, but being able to feel a little fear is what moves you forward. Also, if you feel too much fear, you won't be able to move forward.

The way demons think about magic is close to knights and other code bound fighting caste: one should fight fairly, with honor and so on. At first things outside of the skill set of such people were labeled as dishonorable as way to keep the upper hand on other caste, consciously or not, but with time it became ingrained in the culture and just seemed natural because it looked how it always had been. Just like for a time using crossbow against other christian was forbidden by the church (papal order and all), since it allows a mere peasant with no training to kill a noble night it was label as dishonorable. In the case of demons it is born of the nature of their social order as Flamme explains in the flashback, with that mindset to demons hiding ones mana in this fashion is akin to bringing hidden weapons to a formal duel.

Oh yeah, I saw it more as a fantasy perspective, kind of like a knight’s way of viewing things. But now that I think about it, the real-life references actually fit even better.
