Most American reactors fail to catch the half-second pause when Serie heard that Flamme died, the fact that she dodged Frieren's question of whether she's sad, the walk where her memory of the little Flamme was all over the place, the time that she said Flamme's dream was disgusting/displeasing but with a smile, and those occasional signs of sadness in her eyes when she talked in the walk. You can see her reluctance to let go when the little Flamme sprinted away from her, and how she talked about Flamme's life achievements like a proud parent talking about their kid. She said she only trained Flamme on a whim but of course she remembered her favorite spell and her dream, everything about her, in the way like Frieren saying "it was only a 10 year adventure". Just a side note: in the original Japanese she kept referring to Flamme as "that child" (only simply translated as "she" in the English sub) and that sentence "but humans cannot afford to delay" in original Japanese was "but those children [such as Flamme] cannot afford to delay". Serie really sees the human like kids in her adult eyes, not really in the light of a potentially competing race. Serie just didn't want to admit that Flamme's death hit her hard. She was upset with Flamme's will, like an estranged parent upset about her kid not having visited her during life at all, but only left a bunch of unpaid debts for her to settle. But she missed Flamme anyway. That walk and that talk was Serie's way of dealing with the impact of Flamme's death. She didn't want to be alone so she invited Frieren even though they didn't get along. That monologue was essentially her eulogy to Flamme, the funeral speech that reminisced about the Flamme she knew while celebrating her achievements in life. And in a way, the final parts of the talk she was admitting that her little girl was right about her dream. Watch it again focusing on Serie's perspective and you will see much more than just her being a cold gatekeeper of magic. Serie may have torn up Flamme's will, but 1000 years later she was doing her disciple's wishes anyway. Intro/Outro.
@UltraHD.79 ай бұрын
Yes, Frieren and Serie have completely different mindsets, but Serie is not as cold and harsh as she seems at first. She says she only trained Flamme on a whim, but yet she remembers everything about her so clearly. Look how young Flamme was, she must have probably raised her like she was her own kid. Flamme wanted her to be the leader of humanitys magic and look what she's doing now a mere 1000 years later 🙂 Such an interesting, multi layered character.

Also serie said she didn't care about her apprentice but also remembering their favorite spell so serie is confirm a tsundere. 🤣🤣
@jmhaces9 ай бұрын
Yeah, she basically said "Hey, Frieren, before you go walk with me so I can share my memories of Flamme with you and smile fondly as I boast about her many achievements as I remember her as a little girl holding my hand and I tell you all about her childhood dreams. Why? Because you loved her as much as I did. Now leave while I take a thousand years to come up with a way to grant Flamme's request to take over humanity's magic without compromising my conviction that magic should only be taught to those who are talented."
@MashZ9 ай бұрын
She made her own organizations instead of training the imperial mages so its not too obvious. Also, she's gatekeeping who can join/learn from her because she's still opposing Flamme's belief that magic should be accessible to everyone. She still strongly believes magic is only for talented people and running her organization as such
@theeldude10009 ай бұрын
@@MashZ Serie's intuition is never wrong and she's right to do so in gatekeeping because it's been established quite a number of times and even in recent manga chapters that Imperial Mages in general are kinda dicks and shouldn't be trusted with too much power. Denken has already expressed what is takes to become an Imperial Mage and the amount of backstabbing it entails.
@Bayard15039 ай бұрын
@@MashZ But she's right, she made an independent organization, not dependent on royalty which is always the flip of the coin who competent it is. Also, her mages are actually going and fighting the threats to the world... what would be the point to train weak mages?? And then sending them to their death?
@HugeFrigginGuy9 ай бұрын
The Serie/Frieren conversation has actually become one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. It's so beautifully staged and subtle, which contrasts so nicely with the bombastic struggle of the Frieren fight. If you were just listening to the delivery, or just reading the dialog you could easily assume Serie is completely indifferent to Flamme's death, HOWEVER, the strength of Serie's memories of the little girl she trained "on a whim," literally interposes itself on the present moment. Flamme looks so sweet it is almost impossible for the audience not to feel a swell of affection for her and loss, which is just what Serie is feeling. Just incredibly impressive and evocative, IMO Every member of the production is cooking at full heat in this episode.
@djx71349 ай бұрын
It is actually the best written scene in the entire show. People get annoyed by it because it cuts in right as Fern is making a move, but as good as the fight was, the Frieren-Serie scene is far more interesting.
@UltraHD.79 ай бұрын
In fact, all of those flashbacks and conversations with Flamme and Serie are probably my favorite parts in the show. They deliver so much lore and background and just show how much detail and complexity went into the whole story. They also manage to make me emotional every single time and yes, especially this one in episode 25.
@I_am_doomed9 ай бұрын
Serie doesn't mean a single disrespect she throws. She's just awkward and can't express her true feelings like Frieren. She indirectly praises flamme everytime she gets the chance to, but tries to cover it up by saying that she trained her on a whim. Her, reminiscing about flamme's childhood shows that she deeply cared for her and even remembers her favorite spell. She basically frieren, but a little more expressive

Serie really is one of the more complex and compelling characters in modern manga/anime. In this episode alone she hints heavily that she’s been around since the beginning of Human Civilization, and yet she still remembers Flamme’s favorite spell, her dream and even how she looked as a child. And I love that they got Killua’s VA for her, as a non “traditional” female voice. It fits Serie perfectly.

@jaesaces9 ай бұрын
I'm sure you know because you're done with the series, but Serie saying she only trained Flamme on a whim was a misdirect; it downplayed her feelings about Flamme while dodging Frieren's question as to whether she's sad. Serie's real feelings can be seen by how she acts, rather than what she says: • She takes a person she dislikes on a walk to talk about her former student's hopes, dreams, and accomplishments despite downplaying her feelings about said student. • In the far future she honors Flamme's request in her own way, despite verbally rejecting it in front of Frieren. • And despite her griping about taking human students, she does it again and again.

Well... Let's not forget Serie is, aside from being the Great Mage, also the Great Tsundere. Anyone saying 2-3 times "I only trained her on a whim" while reminiscing the days spend with little Flamme, is not being honest about her feelings.

Dead on about the difference between Serie and Frieren. One looks forward and values magic for magic's sake, while one's stuck in her ways and sees magic as a tool of war. It's why even though Serie has tremendous power, her mindset keeps her from bringing about a peaceful era like The Party of Heroes could. They both have being awkward and warmer than they look in common though.
@djx71349 ай бұрын
But Serie is mostly right. Imagine everyone having magic IRL. It would be a disaster. Humans aren't intelligent or responsible enough. We're violent dumbasses who crave power, worse than even the demons in some ways. The fact that the humans in Frieren's world seem to be unnaturally decent is the only real reason she's somewhat off base.

IMO, if Serie was such a terrible person that didn't care about Flamme, then Flamme would've acted in a way that reflected it. Flamme is never shown to be a weak-willed person who would be terrified of her master and would put up with a toxic relationship and the fact that she literally didn't see Serie for 50 years shows she could've avoided her all her life if she didn't want anything to do with her and Serie wouldn't have done anything about it. In Serie's memory, tiny Flamme is shown walking next to her holding her hand and looking up at her with a smile of adoration and Serie talks about all the stuff baby Flamme told her about her dreams for the future, and when adult Flamme introduced Frieren to her and Serie started trashing Frieren for her lack of ambition Flamme just smiled and called her out on it without taking the bait to fight, using a tone of voice that kind of sounded like part of the message was "Oh, mom. You'll never change. What am I going to do with you?" and Serie, despite her bitchy attitude, was shown to take in what Flamme and Frieren said to her when they argue against something she said, even if she doesn't reply saying they're right because she still disagrees, even if only halfway. Serie is set in her ways and prone to thinking she's right because, well, she's an ancient, immortal and near omnipotent being who's seldom not right. But she still sometimes acknowledges her mistakes or the fact that some things are a matter of perspective, in this case, Flamme and Frieren may not see eye to eye with her and that pisses her off, but that doesn't mean she didn't love Flamme or that she hates Frieren. If anything, she's probably sad that she wasn't able to build a relationship with Frieren and take her as her own student given that they're both elves and that Flamme was important to both of them.
@djx71349 ай бұрын
She desperately wishes Frieren would get serious and study under her, but Frieren never will. Pretty much everything Serie says is mostly BS. And she's really not that subtle about it either. I'm surprised so many viewers seem to accept her at face value.

The line about Zoltraak being around since Fern was born, is meant to reference the ease of acquiring tech-savvy-ness for each successive generation IRL. The earlier in our lifetimes that we are exposed to the cognitive frameworks required to easily use computers, iphones, tablets, etc, the more instinctive it is. I used to teach using Microsoft Office at an Adult Education Center in my city, and older students (as in Baby Boomers, elder Gen X) needed to understand more basic, Operating System paradigms first, like folder directories, cut/copy/paste, dragging items, etc. So they had to expend mental effort for that stuff, whereas folks our age (Millennials, Zoomers) intuitively understand the paradigm much faster and it's almost reflex for us.

can we talk about how Frieren NEVER is one to gloat about being part of the heroes party that defeated the demon lord, its happened multiple times where someone has a statue of her and they dont recognize her and she is like "meh." But in this episode without anyone saying anything she is like "after all i was a part of the party that cleared the most dungeons" This is the accomplishment that she feels everyone should know about her.

Serie actually loves Flamme as a student. That’s why she remembers every moment with child Flamme and established the magic association after a thousand year. Like what she said, elves can delay taking decisions hundred years later because they have a lot of time.

The CLEANEST part of the Frieren vs Frieren fight is the very beginning where they're aiming their staffs at each other while simultaneously tracing the other's aim with some barriers. Incredible episode for that flashback with Serie and Frieren. Serie really did care about Flamme, despite her not saying so. What I see about how they portray magic in this universe is much like how we treat computers and technology. With the way that computer technology has advanced and grown through the generations, we're at that point where it's not really special in our lives and the generations that didn't have it struggle with it, while those youngest instantly know what to do with it. I had to explain to my dad how the desktop on his computer worked and that he shouldn't keep everything on it. Or how to send an email or text, which he's learned but my mom refuses to text... Gotta call. More old fashioned. :)

Idk why, but a lot of reactors get serie wrong. Even with this episode pretty clearly showing serie is talk when it comes to showing her care and love. Like frieren..she's not fully aware of her emotions and feelings. So they both seem cold or uncaring. This was the point of serie seeing flamme as a child and her feeling like she was there. She is sad her student and in a way child has died. Hopefully whenever you finished the series. You and others pick up on this. Seemed obvious to me and some others.

Because she's not braindead obvious, unlike 98% of anime characters out there. People are too accustomed to having all relevant information shoveled into their brains by anime/manga. It's so loaded down by exposition, people start assuming that if something isn't directly explained, it must not be relevant. I don't think it's the viewers' inadequacy as much as just low expectations.

I think Serie is trying to convince herself that she didn't care about Flamme as much as she's trying to convince Frieren. It can't be easy to take an apprentice, investing so much of yourself into them, knowing all the while that they'll grow up, flourish and die in what will feel to you like the blink of an eye. The memories they show of her and the smile on Series face tells me that Flamme managed to worm her way into her heart regardless of all the good reasons Serie had to keep her distance. I believe that Serie truly didn't want to see Flamme's vision become reality, but you'll notice that she did nothing to stop it regardless.
