I love how they portrayed Serie in this episode. Despite her words they show us thats she's grieving and in mourning of Flamme

Serie turning her back to the sun, while Frieren facing it while discussing the future. Visual story telling and symbolism masterclass!

"I've only trained her on a whim" is Serie version of "It was a mere 10 years". She is trying to convince herself that she is not sad. She is like "It was only on a whim so why am I sad now". She is like Frieren before Himmel.

Exactly - she is there as juxtaposition to show how far Frieren has come in understanding emotion since the start of the story. The part where the memory of child-Flamme appears in Serie's thoughts as she walks with Frieren always chokes me up for 2 reasons. Just like when Frieren was traveling to the icicle cherry blossom tree and reveals to Stark that she still (and probably always will) see Fern as she was when she was a child, it shows that deep down Serie loved Flamme like a parent loves their child - she just doesn't understand it consciously yet. And then I wonder "Why was Flamme with Serie at such a young age?" Given her hatred of demons equivalent to Frieren's, and what we know of Fern's tragic past, I think it is implied that Flamme also had a very tragic early childhood and that Serie probably took her in at least partly because Flamme was alone in the world, just like Fern was when Heiter found her. Which honestly makes Flamme an even more amazing character to me because unlike Fern she did NOT have an 'elf-mother' who made any effort to learn about emotions and be more flexible to non-elf perspectives, but despite how hard that must have made it for her growing up with Serie, she never gave up and became someone who could nurture Frieren in just the ways Frieren needed to be nurtured.

I think the end of this episode with Siere and Frieren and Flamme is my favorite scene in the whole show. It's so beautiful and profound.

Ive noticed Frieren says "A mere 10 years" where Serie says "A mere 1000 years" indicating just how ancient Serie must be. I wonder if she lived in the age of myth, and perhaps even talked with the Goddess herself? She is a very mysterious and interesting character.

i'm so happy to see a rection where Serie's flashback is not completely misunderstood. She obviously cared a lot for Flamme, she literally raised her like Frieren is doing with Fern, and she was a huge reason why Flamme became the greatest human mage in history. Also worth noting that, as she said in the flashback, Serie did indeed spend a thousand years thinking, but, in the end, she granted Flamme's wish and founded the Continental Magic Association, thus becoming the central figure of humanity's magic. She's still upholding her principle of only teaching people with talent (at least personally), but she is helping humanity, again. I also kind of agree with Serie that people with poor attitude should not learn magic, cause they would just get killed by demons for no reason, unless they would learn magic for daily life, in which case it would be ok i guess.

Elves have feelings. They just process them very slow because they are almost immortal and have all the time in the world to do so. Or do whatever they like to do.

those dnd adventures of frierens old group are always amazing. today we learned, that Heiter was the guy, who often skipped ssessions so the others made up stupid stuff why his char is not participating. we literally had a guy, who often missed our dnd sessions due to work and we where always joking, how he sits somewhere in the corner being drunk af. just as heiter

Serie is on another level, Frieren would never even entertain the thought of fighting her.

I mean, yeah, Serie was all, "Hey, Frieren. Before you go let me gush about Flamme's many accomplishments as I smile remembering how she used to hold my hand and walk beside me as a little girl. What do you mean why? Because you loved Flamme, not me. No, not me at all. Now go away because I need to take a millennium to carefully think how to come up with a way to honor Flamme's last wish I already told you I refuse to grant so that I can take over teaching humanity magic llike she wants me to, but do it without compromising my values about how I will only teach those who are talented. Now, shoo! Also, don't forget to train a lot because I don't want my apprentice's apprentice to die even though I claim to not like either of you." Serie is just like a stuffy old lady who doesn't know how to deal with her hippie daughter's even less conservative daughter. Frieren has every single trait Serie disapproved of in Flamme multiplied by ten and has a bunch of extra things she doesn't like that Flamme didn't have, but the way she speaks to Frieren shows she doesn't actually dislike her, just like she never disliked Flamme. Serie's words always seem cold and kind of mean, but the message itself usually is not. Plus, for a nearly-omnipotent all-knowing immortal being with thousands of years of experience she is very open to considering other people's arguments, just like she did here when Frieren told her Flamme knew she'd get mad and tear up her will or back in the episode where Flamme introduced Frieren to her and Flamme told her how Frieren would defeat the Demon King while the both of them couldn't. The way adult Flamme behaves around Serie and the things she told Frieren before tasking her to take her will to Serie show that Flamme loved and understood Serie. When Serie said Frieren had no ambition Flamme didn't react negatively, and she just smiled and respectfully explained her point about why she disagreed with a vibe of "Oh, mom. What am I gonna do with you?" and Serie accepted Flamme's point and reflected upon it, just like she accepted what Frieren told her this episode. Later she exhibits the same behavior with some of her other students, like when she apologizes to Sense for criticizing her for passing so many test-takers. She's proud, but not prideful.

We don't often see a major boss fight broken up by a major backstory of the meeting of Serie and Frieren, and then the backstory has a backstory told by Serie about little Flamme. Serie cannot admit her own feelings. She likes and remembers her apprentices, especially Flamme. And her disgust for the Spell to cast a field of flowers, is not honest. She had feelings for Flamme and for that spell! Actually as the story unfolds, Serie has a better grasp on the world situation rather than Frieren's pollyanna let's all Kumbaya.

Japanese Fantasy tends to be based on The Lord of the Rings. That means Elves ARE IMMORTAL. If you had all the time in the world, you don't have the sense of urgency that short-lived races do. Not ambition, not romance, not anger; you can form attachments, but they don't have much perceived impact. Frieren is emotionally stunted because of her trauma of having her entire race wiped out, and not being able to save them (she still has flashbacks about it, a sign of PTSD) so in that way, she's unusual for an Elf. She didn't even realize the ten years she spent with Himmel, Heiter and Eisen impacted her to the point that it changed the course of her life, like the Butterfly Effect (one small course can create significant changes given enough time). Just in this season, you can see her existing more in the now than before; worrying about how Fern perceived her or her bad moods, caring for her teammates, actively using grimoires and spells to accomplish collecting magic as well as excuses to help people and not making people feel indebted to her... Even though it's been nearly 30 years since the death of Himmel, he continues to affect her life, just as Flamme did, just as Fern will.
