Friesian won’t go, clawed by cat, fun failure!

Ok, bad news is that Prince Julius didn’t really see fit to show off today. I did spend some quality one on one time with him though.
Good news is that I was able to figure out how to merge three videos together, and two of them at least were using the device that makes videos a bit smoother.
Ode was great as always, Cosmo the cat was interested in the e horse treats, and made his opinions clear!

Get an empty tennis ball can or empty coffee can and put dried beans or pebbles. Give it a shake and he might begin trotting around. If you don't give a cat the attention they want they will get it with their "Murder Mittens". Julius thinks he's the boss. Friesians have a very strong herding instinct. They love to be in a group, other horses or people. Most of us could watch Julius just stand there for as long as he wants to.

Sad seeing this. So much to learn seeing all his ribs hips and withers with his desire to graze would have looked better and he might have enjoyed himself more turned out into a pasture instead of a dust bowl. Mud is ok. Water is good and needs to be plentiful while feeding dry hay grain and treats. Julius is well trained but you are not. It's not bad if he rolls in mud or dirt. Part of how horses enjoy life. Notice his ears went back in the stall when you stopped feeding him treats. Hand feeding his ears are forward and he is looking forward to the treats. When treats are gone his ears went back again. Beware you could be inadvertantly teaching him a bad habit to bite.

Julius is absolutely gorgeous! He doesn't always have to run around and be showing off. Just watching him walk around shows how magnificent he is and so much like his mom. Calm and just chilling. Just an FYI and I'm not sure anybody else saw, but he looks slightly ribby. Please make sure he's getting enough food for his size. You're doing good job sending us videos and learning as you go. If you're interested in seeing what kind of horse his mother was, go to the Friesian channel and look up "Love at first sight". Uniek had just had a stillborn foal and another mare in the area died shortly after giving birth. It's decided to see if Uniek will accept the orphaned colt, obviously not a Friesian, as her own even though the chances are almost nonexistent of this happening. It's very touching and shows the strong maternal bond very few mares have. I fell in love with Uniek because of this post.

Great job!! Goedzo! Braaf is pronounced like a ladies bra but with an F on the end… but really drag out the 2 A‘s. And Queen Uniek is pronounced as in unique. Prince Julius follows you in the arena because he looks to you as the leader. You could walk all over that arena when he’s in there and he would probably follow you everywhere. James, your doing great job with the videos. No worries. And Queen Uniek loved being rubbed on her forehead and face too. Mostly scratching her neck though is really what she loved. Not all horses likes to be touched in the face area until they get used to you. But some never do like it. It’s almost like invading their space. Also, be careful giving some Cosmo cat treats. Sometimes it will cause kidney stones. Ask me how I know😢. But you’re doing great. Keep up the great work. LOVE Prince Julius! ❤️🐴💙🐴❣️❣️

From what I've seen on the Friesian horse channel, is you can stand outside the ring and make some noises to get them excited and to run around the ring a bit. Kind of like a clicking of your tongue or crinkling a plastic bag a bunch. I think Yvonne usually rubs her hand back and forth really fast on her jacket to make the noise or intentionally shuffles her feet really fast to not really spook the horses but to just get them to move a bit. If you're in the ring with him like that he's gonna think it's treat time! He definitely won't leave you alone if he thinks there are treats xD

He's a unit and you are in charge, not him 😉 When you scratch his neck, REALLY scratch it, otherwise it tickles/ feels like a fly bite. When you hit the spot, their lips quiver, their eyes go dreamy and they'll sometimes lean the other way, offering their favourite spot for you to scratch more! If you watch horses groom each other (that shows friendship/ love to each other/ herd dynamics), they use their teeth and nibble each other. Goedzo to you for using the Dutch terms Julius is used to. Braaf is pronounced with the "ah" sound! And, you also could teach Julius English by using English words following the Dutch words. He will learn what you mean. For the cat, mine always loved freeze dried chicken, but any store bought treat would be fine with Cosmo.

I think it would be wise for all of you to maybe have someone who knows what to do with horses to give you lessons on leading, haltering, etc. It is dangerous to try to control a 1000+ pound animal if you don't know the basics of how to lead them and get them to move for you. Just a suggestion but I don't want anyone to get hurt because they are unaware of basic horse handling. All animals are very smart and will learn quickly how to manipulate you for treats, etc.

I'm pretty sure they've already been given those instructions, or the owner or manager of the facility wouldn't be letting him do anything, until they were comfortable leaving him alone. I think I saw somewhere that they've already had him for a little while, so we're jumping in after that. His daughter is also getting lessons, so everyone is already in the learning process.

He wants instructions from you. You should try to watch a few videos of Yvonne working the horses. You'll get an idea of how to make him move, walk, gallop, canter, etc. By the way, he could use a few extra pounds on him. Talk to your vet. He or she can give you suggestions. Don't worry you're doing a great job. All of this will come to you little by little.

Bravissimo, sir! & Goedzo (you gotta say it like you got a little phlegm in your throat & the G is a H sound; so it’s like HOOD-zo! You boefke (boof-kuh). I really dig your video showing Kaden was, indeed, “in there” & not only understood you, but tried to copy you & jam a bit too. Having special needs, even “in the current year” is tough business but I am ecstatic for Kaden that he has parents & a sister whom love him & advocate for him. Does he have programs that he can use to jam out w/ you? Have you ever asked him, if he could, which instrument(s) would he play??? I know there are apps for piano & guitar he could probably use w/ adaptive adjustments. (Sorry, I had to stop to cackle at the part where you say “how do you say go be a horse a few minutes?” HA!! Ask the stable hands or other horse owners for help & advice. I guarantee there are others at the stable more than happy to help you & Lexi train him, maybe even schmooze you up to take him for a spin. I don’t think you know how loved Friesians are among horse ppl & why. Julius is perfect to teach you horse manners. I do suggest you always pay attention to where you are in relation to his & any other horse’s back legs are. While Julius is very sweet & has an absolutely wonderful demeanor, he *IS* a horse & when they get scared or even mildly annoyed, a strike from one of those legs & YIKES!!! Always try to keep to their front, watch their ears & body language & if they’re skittish or you’re unsure, for any reason, just keep your distance, talk to them hushed & calm. See if they’ll address you. Kinda like w/ dogs. You should check out Yvonne’s videos to learn about your boy & not just all about Friesians & their history & why they’re so strictly bred & also, her videos are perfect to watch with your family! I think Kaden would enjoy watching them too. Don’t be so critical of your videos. You’re making awesome memories for your loved ones & friends & we weirdo Internet randos are blessed to be included to view them. You, good sir, are the king of your video realm. Run = "draf", it sort of sounds like "fluff", it means trot. Your trees in America are spectacular, and your grass looks rather dry, like our Highveld grass in South Africa. Good job filming. You are doing a good job. Eventually you will get the hang of that camera and it will all seem so normal to you. Have you seen any of Yvonne's videos? You might find some reference there. She does make some sort of clicking noise with her mouth that her horses seem to understand. Goedzo! Love your videos. Second that= he needs more weight on him, but probably as a result of the travelling etc. Not a criticism of your husbandry at all- once he settles he will fill out. No need to worry I’m sure, Friesians are solidly built and usually don’t show rib. Thank you for your kindness and efforts to share Julius with his Mother’s human herd ❤

His presence is more than enough for us. He really is a gentle giant like his mom, lovely boy. Difficult to pronounce the G as we Dutchies do but even so, well done! Maybe to get him running you could try : Kom op of Rennen maar, the Dutch word for running is ren or rennen.
