I find it interesting that Risey, who used to play rough most of the day with other young stallions, is now bossed by gentle Saly. I guess a mare with her foal trumps all. Or maybe Saly just isn’t going to take any nonsense from him. 🤷🏼‍♀️❤ Bauke is SUCH a helpful husband and good example for his sons!

To be fair, he's still young, it would be hard for him to scramble an already established rank between much older and more mature mares. He's at an age where his behaviours are going to be varied and more unpredictable, as he grows older, he'll become more mature and predictable. If his previous behaviours in the bachelor herd were of any indication, he's an alpha horse and will eventually outrank the mares but it might take year(s). Usually, a stallion or a gelding becomes more perpetually dominant/competitive at the age of 4-5. Before those years, they display varied personalities and their youth still makes them green in a herd setting, even if they display aggression or bossiness. That's why in the wild, usually the alpha stallion is seasoned while the bachelor herds mostly consist of young males.

It doesn't surprise me that Risey is not (yet) recognized as a leader by the adult mares. As a leader, he would also have the task of protecting the herd (mares and foals). To do this, he must observe the surroundings and recognize dangers, but this requires experience, which he can only gain as he gets older. The interaction between the lead horse and the herd was clearly visible in the video, where Reintje had to gain trust in the water. When she saw Uniek go into the water, Reintje knew she could go into the water too. Risey still has to gain this trust.

Queen Uniek definitely lives on in her daughter, Belle. I'm so glad that you have her, and share her with us! She's truly something special. She's the daughter of a Queen, being raised by another dominant mare- Coralle has been an excellent mother and role model. And Risey is still happily living his best life, despite his disability. I love that so much! He, too, sets a great example for the foals. I find the dynamic between Reintje, Saly and Risey interesting. While Coralle is obviously the boss, Reintje is second in the pecking order yet she seems to think that Risey is higher ranked than her and even moves out of the way when he's near her space, somehow though Risey defers to Saly who's third in the pecking order under Reintje.

I noticed that a couple of days in the pasture that he was moving feet of the mares and foals, while Coralle was leading in front. So, I think there is respect there because he normally is not chased away unless they think he’s too close to a foal, which isn’t that often.

I have been loving the pastures videos. I cried when I saw Queen Uniek stall and her magnet. It's still very raw. Think about her with every video I watch.
