I had a Basset Hound when I was growing up named Abraham. He was as dumb as a stump and a cry baby who was afraid of everything...but he had a heart of solid gold and he would always run up to you when you came home with a wagging tail and shining eyes as if to say "I don't know where you've been...but I am so happy to see you!" He was the bestest boy.

​@@michaelhoskins832I oscillate back and forth between thinking fostering puppies is an excellent way to enjoy lots of Puppy Cute but get to give them all away to a permanent home eventually, and thinking sure, I'd sign up to foster expecting to have many litters and many years of service and ultimately just foster fail on the first pup or two, and I do question how foster families for pets manage to not adopt all the adorable fuzzballs.

As a fellow basset owner, I was very impressed with how well they negotiated for food and cuddles during the bath. And double checking the 'treat pocket' afterwards, just to be sure that all available food had been acquired. And that's at just a few months old!

I have a Bassett mix I adopted. One thing that was said about them was, "If they dont want to do something, you cant make them. And, if they do want to do something, you cant stop them." Amazingly, that proved to be true for my little girl. I can distract her and it doesnt matter for how long, but the second the distraction is gone she is right back to what she wanted to begin with. She also found 'indestructible' toys to be a personal challenge. She conquered them everytime. They really are onery, charming and a great source of amusement. 🥰

Keep in mind that Bassets may be the most stubborn dog you will ever encounter! They are fiercely loyal, affectionate, and can also be funny little clowns. At least that was my experience with mine.

I volunteer at Bard on the Beach here in Vancouver BC Canada. And 2017 we had a Bassett Hound as the doggy star in our production of Two Gentlemen of Verona that summer. And yes Miss Gertie was a stubborn dog. Even barked on stage one day😂

Blueticks are so gorgeous too! What was he/she like as far as stubbornness and trainability? I had a beagle walker hound mix, beautiful dog but very very independent and headstrong! And he was an escape artist. Hid one day to see how he was escaping to see him literally climb a tree that was close to the fence, quick and easy! But i love the bay! Just love that sound! Out in the country though! Too loud for town 😂

We never got any more hounds after my father quit hunting because how much of a handful they were! Don’t get me wrong, we loved them dearly, but they are definitely not breeds meant for the average “house pet” life.

We had a beagle basset bound mix growing up. She had the best traits of both breeds and was the best dog. Someone stole her from our hard (it was the 80s) twice, presumably to breed her, but she was spayed. She reappeared the first time, and then disappeared again a few weeks later. We never saw her again. I hope you had a good life, wherever you ended up, Pudgey.
