It depends on the animal. Steve outright admitted in the episode that he made a mistake and an understandable one at that. And of course he NEVER would have harmed the shark but of course the shark doesn't know that. RIP Steve.

Generally speaking if you're going to handle a shark grabbing it by the tail is your safest option. There's still a risk of being bitten. But it's the best option for you and the shark.
