WAIT... Remember Holes?

20 years ago, Disney release in theaters the movie adaptation of Holes, a story about Stanley Yelnats The Fourth's expierence at a dentention camp where all day they dig holes. At the same time we unlock the story of the past that blends together events, tying into a family curse and so much more. Today to celebrate the classic Disney movie Holes, I thought it would be fun to check it out, go over what the film was all about and take a look at some interesting facts about it all as well.

To this day that line cracks me up and I'm fortunate to work with other guys familiar with the movie. I do solar for a living and occasionally we do ground mounts so we literally need to dig holes and trenches to run the electrical. and without fail one of us just stops digging and says "I'm tired of this grandpa" and the rest of the crew in unison just shout "THATS TOO DAMN BAD. KEEP DIGGING!" cracks all of us up including the homeowners who overhear us.

The connected storylines the characters the symbolism, foreshadowing and callbacks mixing history with modern life this is a master class in storytelling. Children story or not, this movie is very underrated

The part where Kate uses the Lizard to end herself is actually different in the book. The movie has her intentionally use the lizard to bite her, whereas in the book the lizard does so on its own accord. I actually like the movie adaptation more, as it implies that her main goal was to take away what they wanted (the chest) as a parallel what they did to her, and that her "purpose to continue" was done.

The fact the peaches were on his boat all those years later means that as he was fleeing for his life one of the things he found most important to grab was the peaches that she made for him.. 😢

I just appreciate Holes because when people ask about where I grew up, I can always say, "Remember that movie Holes? That's where I grew up." Camp Green Lake was not far from my backyard and I went to school with every extra from the camp scenes. I don't think I'll ever be able to watch it as just a movie, because you get out on that dry lake bed, and it just hits with too much nostalgia.

When Sam got murdered really stuck to me as a little kid that never quite understood how heartbreaking ignorance is. I knew racism was stupid, but it was one of the first exposures I had on how senseless it was. The movie didnt shy away from it either (or at least as much as you could fromna PG movie) seeing him gunned down in cold blood was brutal and sad.

I actually got to meet Zero's actor, Khleo Thomas, at PAX East earlier this year. We both ended up being on the same team for the Pac-Man 99 competition they held there, and he was such a nice, energetic guy the entire time. Ended up rewatching Holes for the first time in years as a result, and it was fun to revisit that movie after getting to hang out with one of the actors!

I absolutely love the balance and pacing of this movie. I'm surprised that after years of this movie being out, the story still holds up and hits hard. I think this is the best adaptation one could've possibly made for this book. I enjoy that it focused on being more realistic than "kid friendly." Addressing much darker themes and throwing in a swear word or two that makes the story feel like it exists in reality.

Holes was one of the few books I read for school that I really enjoyed. When the movie came out, I was nervous because I had always heard that the book is always better. I am so glad that the movie just added to the experience. There were small things changed and things that couldn't be expanded on like they can in book format, but in the end, this was a really good movie.

Ironically, I first watched Holes in a juvenile detention center. During this time I was waiting to be shipped off to a “camp”. Of course I had it in my mind “oh shit, I’m going to be digging holes all day?!?” after watching it. Turns out, the camp was once a summer camp and was actually pretty fun. Thankful for that time as it helped me build character(haha) and made me realize my potential. This was 2005-2006.

It truly is one of the most beautifully considered and deep movies ever written for kids/young adults. I was a massive Sachar fan as a kid just because of Sideways Stories from Wayside School, but with Holes, Sachar truly showed his chops at formulating a deep and compelling plot driven by intricate human emotions and the consequences of failing to fulfill our obligations. The one minor plot hole in this story that really bothers me is: How does Hector get to the camp before Stanley when he was arrested afterwards? Seems like he gets their long before Stanley because by the time Stanley gets there, everyone already knows plenty about Hector, despite that he doesn't talk.

We don't know how long exactly he was going through the legal side of things, for him it could have been a matter of trying to prove he even went to the homeless shelter or sorting through the rest of the circumstantial evidence. For Hector, he stole from a payless, which likely had cameras and employees watching so it could be proven faster than with Stanley.

Stanley had to go through a lengthier trial and he had family to support him in a fight to prove his innocence. Zero was an illiterate street rat who got caught up trying to support himself because of the lack of family, it must've been a lot easier for Zero to get sent to the camp sooner because of those factors.

Kate Barlow is absolutely iconic in my mind. I'd read an entire books series based on just that concept alone. All the old westerns I watched with my Granddad were always a of a man and the bumbling woman who he got as a prize at the end, and then this movie came out and I was like oh my gawd a western storyline with a badass female outlaw who was out for revenge of her own trauma and killing men who'd tried to sexually exploit her. I wanted more of her. And the story is still just as cool and impactful now as an adult. Maybe even more so.

Even with the author directly involved, I am absolutely astounded at how well of an adaptation this movie is. Sure, some stuff was left out, but honestly, that should be expected, and they kept just about every important plot point while adding in some extra scenes that just make the movie better. Love this film, and I haven't rewatched it in some time. I should get on that.

The one thing I think is better in the movie is the ending. In the book the treasure chest turns out to not be worth as much as they thought, only like $200,000. Which is still a lot but changing it to millions I think was a more satisfying conclusion.

At my school, we read the book and then had a field trip to the movies to watch holes in the theater. It's an experience I can never forget. Absolutely loved this book as a kid and seeing it in the theater was even more awesome 😘👍

I never read holes in school. But my sister did. So when I saw the book lying around the house last year, I just started reading it for the hell of it. I was really pleasantly surprised by how creatively it's written. It raises so many questions during the read and answers them fulfillingly in the end. I haven't seen the movie but I'm glad it's faithful to the book.

My wife and I loved this movie as kids, and we occasionally watch it together now. But the best part of it all is that sometimes when my wife says “I’m tired of this”, I respond with “well that’s too damn bad” in the worst southern accent I can and we burst into laughter. It’s one of my favorite jokes that we have 😂

I remember getting a bearded dragon for my tenth birthday because I thought they were adorable in the movie and wouldn't stfu about them. Had that little man for 13 years, they are fantastic pets -- they'll curl up on you and cuddle while you work/watch TV, it's very cute. rip Spike, you kept me sane in college.

We watched Holes in school around 4th or 5th grade I believe, I don’t remember reading the book but maybe we did. It’s definitely not a movie I would ever choose to watch myself but it was cool. There’s so many scenes that I can still remember vividly because they just stuck with me

Holes is seriously one of my favorite movie adaptations. I'll remember reading the whole book in the 6th gr it so underrated I still cry when they had shot Sam. That Zero sense hits me the most when he was asked to spelled " Dig" Zero actually is intelligent, but being that he was a homeless child, he didn't get a proper education, which is why he can't read. Everyone always had looked down on him & not giving him a chance so he had closed himself . Zero was like me growing up he was one of my favorites.

I've always adored Holes, both the book and movie. I remember getting so hyped whenever it came on on the Disney Channel and always quoting Mr. Sir or singing the Yelnats family lullaby. Even as an adult, I still revisit this movie every so often because it remains near and dear to my heart. Stanley the IV was such a sweet kid, and I have mad respect that they prioritized getting his shy and awkward demeanor right for the movie over him being overweight at the start. All in all, this movie has been a source of inspiration for me to write stories with how each of these narratives are intricately woven together. Nothing is there by accident and it's good at teaching its younger audience how to connect story beats. I have every intention of reading Holes to my future children, because it's such a well written story.

The second time I was in a Grade 5/6 split (Grade 6), my class all read Holes together. We didn't get to see the movie until the next year, when I was in Grade 7, along with the Grade 5/6's at my new school. Back then, I was quite impressed with how faithful the movie is to the book, and am still impressed with that, to this day. The characters felt very consistent with their literary counterparts, the movie still told the same story as the book, the movie didn't sugar coat or gloss over any of the heavy themes presented in the book, and any minor changes that were made didn't take away from the narrative of the story or cause any plot holes. This movie is still one of the best book-to-movie adaptations out there.

i still think of this movie from time to time. it has stuck with me after all these years and quote it very often lol. i love how gritty it was for a disney movie. they don't make movies like they used to. the way everything was connected without making the forced is a great story element. the way the characters grow and develop towards each other seems very natural as well.

I absolutely love this movie and I always will. It’s a childhood favorite of mine and that scene with the tense music and Kate screaming Sam right before the loud gunshot will forever give me goosebumps and make me shed a tear or two. I wish the Disney today would go back to making amazing movies like this one but sadly I don’t think they’re even capable of that now. I’m really glad you made an in depth analysis/review of this movie because it was really fun hearing someone on KZbin talk about it again. I only wish that Shia LaBeouf would star or even just participate in more movies today because you barely see him in movies anymore and it makes me sad because he has always been one of my favorite actors and he’s really good at it too. Btw for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie yet I highly recommend watching FURY because it’s an excellent story with lots of really good action and dialogue and it stars several big actors such as Brad Pitt, Jonathon Bernthal (who plays both the punisher from Netflix and Shane from the walking dead) ,and of course Shia LaBeouf.

Fun fact: the reason why the movie is such a good adaptation is because Louis Sacher, the book's author, was asked to be the screen writer for the film. This movie's a childhood favorite of mine, so I watched all the DVD extras in the car on long drives.

One of my favorite bits of pragmatic adaptation is Stanley's opening monologue about the camp (how there are no fences or guard towers, because it's in the middle of the desert and there's nowhere to run off to) and the yellow spotted lizards. It's quoted almost verbatim in the film... by Mr. Sir, when Stanley first arrives. Kudos to whichever of the two writers realized how perfectly it sounds like something he would say.

My sister and I used to watch this movie all the time....but only on commentaries. The boys of D-Tent were hilariously informative on their filming experiences and their inside jokes became our inside jokes. Not to mention these boys worked with and starred with some of the greats!!! Henry Winkler, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voigt, Eartha Kitt, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette and Dulé Hill.

The subtle part about the curse is "always and eternity" so theoretically they would have bad luck, but they would also be cursed to have a son to continue the family line. Otherwise, someone with eternal bad luck couldn't manage to survive long enough to procreate.

In 2005 or 2006 my now ex-wife and I watched this, and jokingly said Zero was 100% what our kid would look like if we were to have one. We did. He's 12 now. He looks so much like Zero it's almost unsettling. On top of that, I found a few months ago that he's started using Zero has his name in video games, and he's never seen Holes or had us mention it to him until I saw him using that name in a game. No point to this other than I love the movie, book, and find it funny that my ex and I nailed it on how our kid would look.

It was always cool learning about this movie after it came out. Like the bulk of the lizards that were physically used to portray the yellow spotted ones on set were just bearded dragon's. Or how essentially the only BIG difference between the book and movie was that they didn't make Stanley overweight/larger and then loose weight over time -- which is fair, as like it was stated they didn't want to put any kid through that much weight loss in such a short amount of time and honestly I respect them for that.

I love this movie so much. Not a single scene or line or character feels extra. Everything is important and ties into a larger story. It's so cool to see it all unfold and to make the connections as the movie goes on. And everything ties into a bigger message, that whatever you put out in the world will eventually come back to you so be kind and be a person of your word. Genuinely great movie.

One of the few movies/shows I watched as a kid that continues to hold up to my nostalgic feelings I had watching it as a kid. Often you watch something you watched as a kid and realize how dumb the plot is or how many holes (pun-intended) the story has, but Holes doesnt feel like that. Its just as good, if not better. Im able to appreciate the nuances of the story and how deep it actually goes for a kids movie. Its no Inception, but its a damn good movie that keeps the better years and memories of my life alive. Lifes gotten sad and miserable and all I have as a source of happiness now are the memories I cant go back to. This movie is one small example of a memory I am able to relive, and thats something. Awesome movie, and it will always hold a place in me.

Man I love this film, is such smooth and easy movie to watch. It's all substance with little to no fat and just moves along at a brisk pace! I love how all the past events and characters and the three families of zero Stanley and the warden are all tied together and the way that their connections play out. Outside of the lizard cgi that isn't even a problem, this movie is flawless!

@@Gibbypastrami It's still written by Luis Sachar; it's called Small Steps. It was written for an ever so slightly more mature scene, as it's plotline dealt with Armpit re-assimilating into his old life, away from the support system he had created with the boys at camp. It's been over a decade since I last read it, but it deals a lot with "broken home upbringings" to put it lightly. Besides that, there's two storylines and the lines I quoted have to do with Janis Joplin. Hopefully I piqued your curiosity!
