I rode this trip and I agree with a prior post, the 1522 had the loudest stack talk that I have ever heard. The photo runby we had a Rolla was so loud that it was the only time my ears ever hurt for the sound of a steam locomotive.

It's amazing that as of this wednesday that 20 years have passed by since this run of the 1522. This truly was the biggest splash that 1522 made that opened up doors of oppurtunity. Both NS and Up steam locomotives were in town with there respective train sets and this trip sold out with over 700 riders. With the success of the 1522 at the 1990 NRHS convention she would make a couple of NS steam excursion runs around the St. Louis area and then came the big trips of 1994 and 1995.

It was a Panasonic PV-8500 recorder which used a separate camera attached via a cable. It was the top-of-the-line consumer portable when it was introduced in late 1984. I got mine in April of '85. It recorded in linear-track stereo, not hi-fi like later models. My Dad bought the GE version. They were identical as they were both made by Matsushita. When Pop passed away I got his unit and used for the transfers to digital, thus enabling me to retrieve the stereo sound. My unit is long gone.

I went down to the convention to see the engines. Got a private cab tour of #1522 after the crew heard my Frisco family history and Jeff Schmid gave the OK. They were not set up for viewing, no platform, but they pushed and pulled me up there. I was not about to miss that opportunity. Mom was still alive and I was able to share this with her.

Gotta agree, 1522 had the loudest stack of any steam engine, and on exercusions like this she was not afraid to show it off.
