In the #LotR books Frodo leaves the Shire much later. He even sells Bag End to Lobelia. The Nazgûl are already close, but he is saved by the Elves, singing their beautiful song. It should not be the last time, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin are saved by fate itself. #Tolkien proves in Lord of the Rings time and time again what a masterfully writer he is. He writes poems, plays with etymology and creates his own mythology and magical world in an epic genre defining fantasy story.
In this series I go through the LotR films bit by bit and explain the differences and references to the books and their #lore in detail. This is Episode No. 5

• How Gollum got caught,...
Next Episode (Episode 5):
• Farmer Maggot, Escapin...
Mistakes
- I forgot: beyond Melkor, also the Vala Ulmo transformed Elwing into a bird for a short time to save her life.
- Khamûl could also be pronounced "Chamûhl" (CH as in German "Bach") at least by the Orcs, quote from Appendix E:
"kh thus represents the same sound as ch in Orkish Grishnákh, or Adûnaic (Númenórean) Adúnakhôr. On Dwarvish (Khuzdul) see note below."
Orcs officially spoke Black Speech too, but also their own languages and dialects. So it's imo not clear if it's the same in Black Speech.

@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 5 жыл бұрын
haha thank you. That' a rare compliment (about the accent) ^^ Yoystan is also a great dude, who makes great videos, so thank you for that too. In case you are interested, here are some of my observations and thoughts: I don't know either why my subs are only climbing so slow. I think maybe because I split my content between gaming and Lore for a long time (I started as gaming channel). I also usually upload not as frequent as the others (therefore I make longer videos up to 95 minutes, but I changed the pace a bit recently, which seems to help). In addition the "trying to pronounce words as Tolkien described it" turns some people away (while others love it, but it's definitely more "controversial" this way). Interestingly Men of the West, Geekzone and me even started around the same time with lore videos, but I only made those occasionally. Another interesting point: I don't know why exactly some of my videos got so many views. But I can't reproduce this success and my not core viewers seem to not like (or simply don't use) the YT interactions that much. E.g. I my Istari video has around 200k views and is watched for around 33 minutes on average, which is a lot, but it only has 1500 likes. Comparable videos of Geekzone or Yostan sit on 4.5K. So maybe it is a quality issue. People think it's good but not good enough. Or maybe it's the length and people forget to like at the end. Their core audience is much bigger, so those are more likely to like, etc. Hard to say. But I assume all those lead to fewer views and subscribers in the end.

The journey from Hobbiton to Crickhollow has always been one of my favorite parts of the LOTR. The world building is wonderful and I think this section also contains some of Tolkien's finest descriptive writing. It's also Frodo, Sam, and Pippen's first taste of the dangers inherent to their task.

@9:15, I think Gandalf could change Sam into a Toad, but I suspect he'd be exhausted for a time and need rest. I also think it'd severely taint his Spirit due to the Evil nature of such a thing. However, I ALSO believe Gandalf has no qualms about letting it be THOUGHT that he could do it, and that he might, if provoked.

I personally found the Nazgûl in the books to be really threatening right from the start (though not really terrifying, interestingly) as they had just a few short appearances, and there was literally nothing known about them. I had read the chapter index up front, and one chapter I remembered was "The Uruk-hai", so I thought "I bet they'll find out they are called Uruk-hai later". Being so strange and elusive made them much more ominous than the open chase in the movie, though the scenes of Nazgûl riding around in the Woods in the moonlight are incredible. Overall the Nazgul in Fellowship are one of the strongest points in the trilogy in my opinion. Well, except that weird thing with the spiders and insects.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I really like was they did in that limited time (esp. the Extended Edition). I heard in the audio commentary, that peter Jackson wanted to visualize, the terror that they represent and so all insects and spiders, worms, etc just fled from the tree and the earth in terror, when he was near by sniffing for the Ring. I also found it strange, but when I learnt about the intention, I liked it more (I also mention this in the video in text form; it was one thing I forgot in the script and I hadn't the motivation for a new recording, while editing, so I added it as text, but I probaly will mention it next episode again) ^^

Don't forget that Luthien turned Beren into a werewolf as a disguise to travel undetected to Thangorodrim. For herself she became a bat/vampire like creature. She, as you know was half Maiar through her mother Melian. So if Luthien a half Maia could transform Beren a full Maiar like Mithrandir or Gandalf could transfer Sam into a toad if he were evil.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a good example too, but i think a more "wilful" transformation, compared to Elwing ^^ PS: Exactly. I think I argued in the same direction in episode 5 (if Fandalf can transform him, it's evil). I would also argue that being "half" (e.g. half-elven) of something does not necessary mean you are only half as good. All half-elven are absolute legends often surpassing even the "full elves" in their deeds. Lúthien was truly special and extremely powerful.

It is sad to me that people who only sees the films don't really get an appreciation of just what a monumental feat it is for Bilbo to give up the ring. It is quite possible that only a few Hobbits and Tom Bombadil could ever give the Ring of power away, It's debatable that even Sauron could give the it away (if he wanted to for some reason).

A line from the book that wasn't used in the film, was after Gildor telling him that advice can be dangerous to give, explaining his hesitation to give Frodo them, he replies "They say that it is unwise to ask elves for advice, as they both say yes and no". Instead it was used in the Extended Edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey where Bilbo and Elrond have their first private conversation and starting their long-life friendship (which is in the books). After Elrond tells Bilbo that he have heard about hobbits being resiliant and being comfort of home, Bilbo tells him that "I've heard that it is unwise to seek the advice of elves, for they'll both answer yes and no" which bemuses Elrond and tells the hobbit that he's welcome to stay in Rivendell if he wishes.

@@ThePhilosophersGames hey brother!! I admire your vid`s very much. You are a Tolkien fan to the core of your soul. But I must correct the statement about the Hobbits meeting the elves on the road. Those elves are Noldor. The Noldor speak Sindarin everyday,only using Quenya on rare occasions. Gildor is from Rivendell. Rivendell is a haven for the remaining Noldor in Middle Earth. The Elves in all other realms,Lothlorien,Mirkwood, are of Teleri descent. This is the meeting in the book......Noldor Elves, I am sorry if I misunderstood your meaning. Do you know that the first Elf meeting on the road by the Hobbits are Noldor? That is the truth in the book. I might have misunderstood you, and you are in agreement with me. I do not recall the film having put that meeting on screen. The films were a good attempt at bringing LotR`s to life cinematically , but nobody could possibly put the entire story in to a reasonable film. It would take 15 hours to complete 1/3 of the book, give or take a few hours!!!! LOL. Remember ,mellon, the LotR`s is NOT a Trilogy!!!! It is ONE book, broken down to 3 sub-titled works,due to the enormous amount of material and the publishers giving J.R.R. a short leash. 13:30 As you point out Shirriff = Shire-Reeve (in name but not in function). Other playful borrowings from Anglo-Saxon are "Thain" = old English "thegn" , a knight of the shire, and the Shiremoot, a real institution (actually a court concerned with title to land). I guess Tolkien knew of these from Bishop Stubbs' Constitutional History of England, Oxford 1874 ---------------- 18:00 In the book the Black Rider is seen off by Elves singing the hymn to Varda: "Gilthoniel! O Elbereth! Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath!" These words have caused some mystification, not to say amusement. In fact the imagery references Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. She is conventionally described as clear (or bright) eyed; in Greek "glaukopis", literally gleaming-eyed. Tolkien originally wrote not "bright thy breath" but "cold thy breath" (C.Tolkien, 'Return of the Shadow'). I see here a reference to Boreas, the North Wind, an object of special devotion to the Athenians; he was the son-in-law of their first king Erechtheus, himself fostered by Athena.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, i think I will look closer at the "Thain" (and maybe its real world connection) when we reach the "The Scouring of the Shire" chapter. Oh that's a very interesting observation and idea (the connection to Athena and the Athenians). Makes sense, esp. considering Tolkien's relation to Ancient Greek and their mythology. Thank you for sharing.

Athena appears in Aeschylus's Eumenides as the protector and rescuer of Orestes. The play describes his pursuit by the Furies, offering (it seems to me) some pretty strong parallels to Frodo's pursuit by the Nazgul. They track their prey by the scent of blood, singing a deadly hymn: "men's thoughts, very proud under the sky, waste away and dwindle in dishonor beneath the earth, at our attack in black robes [370] and the vindictive dance of our feet" --- from the 1926 Loeb translation, www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0006 ------- Sorry if this is OT but it's a pet theory of mine that the Furies were in fact Tolkien's inspiration for the Nazgul --- bearing in mind that the latter first materialised in a draft of the Woody End sequence ['Return of the Shadow']. In fact I'd argue that this and other Greek plays (especially Euripides' Bacchae) are prime examples of Faerian Drama of which Tolkien (in 'On fairy-stories') claims "abundant records" exist

In the scene where Sam stops and say that the fields that he and Frodo are standing is the farthest way from home and Frodo urges him to continue, there was a car driving in the background. Editor John Gilbert noticed it but thought that nobody would see it and didn't tell anyone of it. In the Director's Commentary Peter Jackson have heard of people seeing the car but he caims that no matter how hard he looked, he couldn't see it in the shot. In an later interview he admits that he have seen the car in the background, probably have been shown or told by someone in the crew or even a fan at some point afterwards. This is in the theatrical version, though, as it have been painted out from the Extended Edition, which Gilbert tells in the Prouduction/Post-production Commentary.

Galadriel was one-quarter Vanyar, her grandmother being Indis the second wife of Finwe, from whom she inherited her golden hair, which was unique to the Vanyar. So she combined all three tribes of the High Elves, and, I would say, inherited her wisdom from her Vanyar lineage. Glorfindel, too, was descended from the Vanyar, as evidenced by his golden hair. Although dark-haired like her father, Arwen and her brothers, Elladan and Elrohir, are all one-sixth Vanyar, more than their one-eighth Noldorean heritage. Elrond himself is 5/24ths Vanyar, more than his Noldorean, Telerian or Sindarian blood. So I don't think it's quite fair to say there are no Vanyar left in Middle Earth; although I agree that the royal houses, being patriarchal in lineage, are Noldorean.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 4 жыл бұрын
Yes ofc, but they are the royals of the Noldor Clan, not of the Vanyar Clan. All Elves who are somehow related to Finwë and Indis (esp.Turgon who's wife was a Vanya) have a part Vanyar in them. But the "pure" Vanyar Elves did not return to Middle-earth. The only one mentioned is Turgon's wife Elenwë, but she died while crossing Helcaraxë.

There were 29 takes of the deer sniffing the hobbits. This has been told by editor John Gilbert in the Production Commentary.

Good question and I'm not sure that information actually exists (his crown was formed into a collar), but I look into it.

An exception to these rules governing shape changing appears in the story of Beren and Lúthien. Lúthien takes the form of a vampire while giving Beren the shape of a werewolf.

In the film Sam and Frodo just got back from a night of drinking

Yes, really liked that scene. It's a cool contrast: from merry partying with your friends to "the end is near" in a few seconds. The look on Gandalf's face is so powerful. He looks worried and scared. And if Gandalf has this expression you know things just got serious.

Since a little person while possible to lift, you could risk hurting him or her or that person to be quite heavy to lift, so it wasn't Sam's scale double Bhoja Kannada (called BK) but a dummy of Sam that Ian McKellen lifted through the window. While not noticeable in the film itself, you can see it in the behind the scenes documentaries.

This time it was a bit longer, but spoiler: we still haven't left the Shire or reached Crickhollow. I also forgot something in the video, but I will add it to next episode. PS: Mistakes - I forgot: beyond Melkor, also the Vala Ulmo transformed Elwing into a bird for a short time to save her life.

The books state that the Nazgul were ancient kings of men corrupted by Sauron and given rings of power to bind them to his will. They were completely enslaved to him, to the point that their existence ended when he was finally defeated.

The constant rolling of your "R"s is very distracting.
@ThePhilosophersGames

Yes I see that some people find it annoying (I also roll the R quite strong). The idea behind it is: I try to pronounce names as Tolkien described it and the trilled R is very common in many European languages (esp. the old ones), that Tolkien was inspired by (he also rolled the R when he spoke English, because he used the Received Pronunciation). Tolkien's languages are e.g. inspired by Welsh and Finnish, where the R is trilled even today. This won't make it less annoying I assume, but at least explains why I do it ^^ I made a video that also covers this topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIC1oJ9thbaYj80 if you are interested

I disagree- he's going by how Tolkien himself, giant language nerd that he was, would've wanted.
