He's a hard guy to figure out but I think there may be some truth to what you say...I think these interviews with Parkinson,Clive James, Clive Anderson are an insight into how he worked with Dud.....

I love how, after leaving Vic more or less dumbstruck for some time, nearer the end he happens to make an off the cuff observational statement, then Vic jumps in with a better follow-up line, so he then seems to quite intentionally switch to observational stuff for a while, against his usual style of comedy, seemingly to give Vic chances to shine by throwing in other observational lines. Makes me think he was a very generous co-star to other performers.
