I chose the a7III because of the price and performance. Grabbed two Zeiss primes, 25mm and 85mm, because I don't go cheap on lenses. This trio covers 99.9% of anything I want to shoot.
@PhilThach6 жыл бұрын
If I HAD to switch to Sony I guess I'd get the A7III. It's certainly the best bang for the buck with the A9 focus system and the great high ISO performance. Still, I would miss my 500 f/4 if I made the switch. They (Sony) also don't have anything that can match my Nikkor 200-500 f/5.6. Especially for the price of that lens. What we need is 100% functional Nikon lens to Sony body adaptor or, even better, a Nikon mirrorless full frame that's as good as these Sony's with an adaptor INCLUDED in the box and ready for a sniff test.

Jared Polin I was hoping to see a response regarding "large prints" couldn't have said it better myself lol
@keithgoreham14636 жыл бұрын
As someone who currently shoots with the Nikon D850, I can say that 40+ mp is overkill most of the time. The best use I have for it is having the freedom to crop in on wildlife or sports subjects that have been shot at extreme zooms. It gives you more reach in a pinch. But it also is much more sensitive to camera movements, and even with good stabilized lenses I have to crank up the shutter speed more than I'm used to. So I'm leaning more towards the A7iii as a replacement for my 24mp D750, and then only because I need something that will shoot better video.
@schatzor6 жыл бұрын

When I was growing up, my father and I had a deep bond over our love for photography and geeking out about cameras. Whenever I would return home after having flown the nest he would show me all the cameras, lenses and accessories he had bought (usually on eBay) that he'd fixed up and planned to one day sell. He would always reference your videos and would often say, with great joy and all sorts of hand gestures that so-and-so camera or lens was favoured by "Fro Knows Photos". He died two years ago and I have since inherited all of his cameras - mainly DSLRS and a few vintage film cameras. I've been shooting with his Nikon d800 a lot since then but just somehow just today stumbled across the A7III as a means to capture some better video for my channel. In my search for information on the camera, I found your channel again. When you said 'Fro Knows Photos" at the beginning of this video I was instantly taken back to many happy memories of my father and it brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. He was so fond of your channel Jared and not only has this video helped me decide that I am going to make the move to mirrorless but in a totally unplanned move you've made me feel very close to my father whom I miss very much. Who need 42 megapixel? Almost nobody. Even with a old 6 mp camera, you can print big posters if you don’t crop. 24 mp is a very high resolution if the picture is sharp. And those three cameras god a fantastic af without front or back focus as you se with nikon and canon. Even the Sony/Zeiss lenses for those cameras, are razor sharp wide open. Not all Nikon or canon lenses are like that. Even the standard 28-70 kit zoom, is amazing sharp. I changed from Nikon. I shoot with the D4 and D800e and switched to the A9. First of all I don’t miss the 36 megapixel at all. I got more sharp images with my A9 then with any Nikon I ever used. It’s more important to me that the camera catch the focus, and the A9 do that for me every time. Before I switched system, I tried the D5 for a month and I found out that the A9 worked much better for me. I much tell that the A9 is the best digital camera I ever had. And I also shoot digital Hasselblad with 39 mp in the past. The A9 can do everything everywhere and just does it better than anything else. The camera is not as big as the D4/D5 and that means freedom to be creative. With the price of the A7III, you got a very flexible camera for almost no money. If you can’t make great shots with that, you are simply not a good photographer. You can do 98% of everything with that camera. If you shoot Canon, simply buy the Sigma MC11 and you can use all your canon EF lenses without problems. I got both a 85mm f:1,2L II and a sigma 24 f:1,4 ART for EF mount (I also shoot analog with a Canon EOS 1v), and both those glass work perfect on my A9.. even better than on Canon!
@JonPoklop6 жыл бұрын
That depends entirely on what printer you use and the quality you want to get. If you are printing 300dpi 4x6s or 8x10s at Walmart, I agree your 6mp is fine. I can tell you with out a doubt my 50mp Canon 5DS looks much better at 1200dpi on my digital press than the same image cropped down to the 24mp equivalent. The increased sharpness, even on small size prints, is very visible.
@awildtomappeared59255 жыл бұрын
cropping is very important for a lot of people, on a 40mp sensor you can crop down to 12mp and still have a good image, this means you can get the shot you want without wasting time changing lens, it would be amazing if in the future sensors are 100mp+ so you could just use a good quality wide prime lens and crop in for almost all images
@miket.19335 жыл бұрын
I really don't get you people. Don't you ever print something bigger than 8x10 or shit like that. I have a few 80x60 cm and 40x30 cm prints from my Nikon D7100 and a 10 MP camera and the difference is pretty visible. I would love to have 40 MP.

I have an A9 and am considering "downgrading" to the A7III simply because the A9 doesn't have slog. Which I don't understand?? I know the A9 is more of a photography camera, but it seems weird that a $4,500 professional camera doesn't have slog like even the way less capable sony cameras like the a6300. (still a great camera, but just not even remotely as good as the A9) Why did they not include slog? No idea. Will they add it? Probably not from what I've heard?

Honestly you can’t beat that price for the A7III. As far as value for money the A7III is the best camera on the market today. Maybe the best value for money, full frame, camera ever 😅. I’d choose the A7III and have that extra money for glass. The better features in the a9 just aren’t “that” much better than the a7III for me. The a7III will definitely get the job done. I’d also choose the A7III over the rIII for the 98% Af and the higher iso. Personally feel, and for the photography I do, that those two are more important than megapixels.

@randyrosca64716 жыл бұрын
@Arvid Kracht Well... No, the only advantage is not just the no recording limit. It has far better control over the rolling shutter, it has the flippy screen with a lot more touch functions, and at this point it can be had for less money and native lenses are generally quite a bit less expensive than Sony's. Don't get me wrong, I think the A7III is a ridiculously amazing camera for the money, but so is the GH5. They both do a lot of good things for the price.
@randyrosca64716 жыл бұрын
Arvid Kracht I think people have a right to complain about the autofocus. It’s clearly not as good as the Sony. However, the RoninS can control the focus on the GH5. Not a bad trick, right? Like I said - amazing cameras for the money. I have both and I like them both very much.

What if you downscale a 42MP image from A7R III into 24MP produced by A7 III. I think the noise is almost the same. Furthermore, there are software options that will reduce the noise better on higher resolution. With A7R III you receive the versatility to crop more and reuse your APS-C lenses and good enough quality (resolution). Also these days A7R III seems to be much cheaper than before.

Planning on making the switch from Canon to Sony in the coming months. I want to make the transition slowly and use my current Canon lenses (gen 1 Canon 2.8 EF 16-35/24-70/70-200) until I can afford the switch to Sony glass. Which adapter would you recommend I go with?

I use a MC-11 and I find it works well with my favorite lenses - 50/1.2, 100/2.0, 24-70/2.8-II and 24-70/4. Having said that, focus starts to suffer with the slower/longer lenses when the light drops and can be frustrating at times. I eventually bought a Sony 85/1.8 to compliment my kit, and am pretty impressed with its sharpness and improved focus speed over the adapted Canon lenses. However, my old manual focus lenses have found a new lease on life, they work so well with the EVF. Eye follow focus, IBIS, and the EVF are awesome and worth every cent.

If you can afford, I recommend A9. I own A9 and A7iii.

well, I already have the a6000, and the a7s, and I think I would like to get the a7RIII, the price on B& H Photo right now is about $2400.00, and about the same at K.E.H. and that's not too bad. I really don't do videos, I mainly do photos, and it's only in my spare time and I'm retired so it's just a hobby but I enjoy it. Maybe if I sold some of my old cameras I could save some money...lol

Amazing review! Many thanks! I’m going with the iii for two reasons: price and low ISO.

a9 for sports, low light, and silent shutter! I'm using an a99 right now.

I was a Sony shooter for a very long time but everyone have different needs and is looking for different things. For me personally i decided that the only thing that matters for me is Image Quality. I learned to shoot with an Analog so i can shoot sports with 1fps just fine, i rarely ever need high ISO in real life situation (looking at the statistics for my images i am shooting at ISO 100 for ~99% of the time) I was shooting with an a99 for roughly 1,5 years before i exchange it for an SIGMA SD1 because the image quality was such a big step up. The a99 couldn't stand a chance against the SD1 Now i am at the sd Quattro and out of curiosity i tested the A7r III at the Sony Center in Berlin because i heard of the new Pixel Shift feature and compared Pixel-Shift RAW Images to the SFD Images of my sd Quattro and the Sony is still so far away in terms of image quality that i am not going back. And especially for the price i can not accept that the camera is Made in China and the G-Master lenses are Made in Thailand, but thats a different story most people dont care about. So for me personally, its non of the three. Sure the sd Quattro, on the paper, may be by far the worst of the three, but in the end, when i develop the images on my computer and look at them, i have the best result And that is the only thing i care for. Would i mind having more/better features on the sd Quattro? I guess not, who does not like more/better features. But is it worth to give up image quality? For me, no. But everyone does have different needs and thats totally fine.

Jared, please advise. I'm switching from Canon to Sony. I'm still photographer. I shoot everything. So potraits (studio and family/candid), travel, street, astro and lately birds/wildlife. I'm buying sigma mc-11 to use my EF Sigma glass and hopefully some Canon/Tamron. I wonder which would be better. Just Sony A7RIII for everything. For birds I would crop a lot so super 35 on 42mp is better in that case than A7iii. But for the same price I can buy A7III and A6400. So I can use APS-C for birds, it got better tracking that both A7iii and A7Riii. So I can have my Simga 150-600 all the time on the small body and use A7iii for other purposes (sometimes for birds also). I know that all 3 cameras work fine with MC-11 and sigma 150-600 (and other supported Sigmas). I wonder which package got the adventage. I know that with 2 bodies my footprint is bigger and I have to deal with 2 kind of batteries, and probably have to buy 2 Sigma MC-11. But then I got 2 cameras so I'm more flexible. With A7Riii I got smaller footprint, 1 battieries type to carry/care. I wonder if there is something I've missed that set one of the choices much better. BR,

Just bought A6400 to see how it's to use sony camera :). If this won't be enough for birds I would go for A7R3. If it would be sufficient I would buy A73 and have dual camera setup. So far, evf is different than ovf ;), focussing system is 10 times better than canon 200d. 9 focus points vs hundreds of them is no match. Also modes of AF are amazing. But I got only kit lens and it tends to miss focus (like 50% of shots). Camera is not supported yet in Darktable so I have to convert ARW files to DNG to be able to work with RAW format from a6400 (little pain in the ass). Waiting for Sigma MC-11.

I've been shooting with the A6500 and A6400 in tandem since the A6400 came out. I do like both cameras but, was hoping for a really spectacular improvement in the A6500 replacement such as a 1/8000 second shutter (so I can use f/1.4 lenses wide open in the bright sun), However, I was so underwhelmed with features of the A6600 that I purchased an A7iii to replace the A6500 (which I will be selling shortly)... Luckily, most of the Sony glass that I own (50mm f/1.8 OSS excepted) is full frame! future proofed myself that way... I will be shooting with he A7iii and A6400!

Sync speed disappointment - A7riii After using the Sony A7riii in the studio this week, I have learnt that you cannot achieve a sync speed of 250/1 as stated by Sony with regular studio lights such as Profoto D1's (none HSS). I used 200/1, but every image suffers from a sync shadow down one side - something that I've got to explain to my client! I could have settled on 160/1 which probably would have removed this ugly grey shadow but I would have got blur from my subject as they had movement. If I had know that I could not achieve 250/1, I would not have bought this camera. So this week will begin my complaint with the retailer, which is a shame as I thought I bought a near perfect camera. Interestingly none of the regular you tubers who push Sony cameras have not brought this little detail to the fore...hmmmm

I bought the A7riii for inspection work on the bottom of a DJI Matrice 600 pro with a DJI ronin mx gimbal. Split between video and photo was the choice. Very disappointed in the controls via the Sony app though.

I might lean towards the A7iii. I live in Iceland, the winters are very dark and long, good ISO capabilities is a must, here. Even though the summer is a 24 hours daylight, the weather is often bad, so not a lot of light. I think I'm going to try this camera. I'm a Canon user, I really like the color science and the vast selection of lenses at affordable prices, but it seems always behind the competition. Only way to find out is to grab some other brands, try them and see if they are worth for what I do.

Great Review as always - I really like the information you provide in your reviews!!!! BTW: in 14 years of shooting DSLR cameras, I have never mistakenly shifted the mode dial so a mode dial lock is a non-event for me. I wish to heck that cameras had a dioptric adjustment knob lock because I tend to mistakenly shift that knob frequently and always need to ensure that it is correctly adjusted at the beginning of a shoot...

The A7ii is the one that I would choose based on the price and focusing system. However, I have seen Sony Refurb A7Riii cameras very close to the price of a new A7iii...

Great review. Covered all the points of interest and related them to specific photographic needs/situations. Excellent unbiased comparisons to other manufactures as well. So now I'm totally confused. As an old timer, we learned to always by the latest and greatest in technology because it's going to be outdated as you walk out the door. Presently I'm a Canon guy but have no allegiance to the product both emotionally and economically. As of this date I'm waiting to see if Canon will come out with something that blows any of these Sonys away. It's clear Nikon has failed completely with the introduction of the Z mirror-less cameras. Thanks FRO BRO!

Jared, regarding AA filter in the A7III, several testers suggest (quote taken from dpreview) "that, if the a7 III has an anti aliasing filter, it's extremely weak, designed to only filter excessively high frequency detail in the horizontal axis." The A9 has an AA filter which operates both horizontally and vertically, and as such is much stronger.
