His paintings - massive photo-realistic renditions of photographs, many of them self-portraits - made Chuck Close one of the most celebrated artists of the late 20th century. Close talks about his oversized canvases and the artificiality of art in this report by anchor Charles Kuralt that originally aired on "CBS Sunday Morning" on April 19, 1981.

I did a show at CBGB in the mid to late 90s. I had just started painting, and brought the nicest painting to this show, and put it in front of my Marshall speaker cabinet. At this show was a gentleman in a wheelchair. When we were done, and I took my stuff of the stage, the guy rolled up to me and asked, who did the painting. I told him that I did it. He asked, how long had I been painting, and told him, this is the third one I have ever done. He told me it was nice, and to keep painting. I asked how did you like the show, and he said it was entertaining. He then rolled away after saying goodnight. Then a few folks asked me what did we talk about. I said he asked me about the painting, and liked the show. One person says, don't you know who that is? I was like no...I really have no idea. They then tell me hey....that is Chuck Close! I still had no idea, until I saw that MoMA was doing a retrospective of his work. I went.....and yes my jaw dropped!!! This man is a giant of the art world, and will be missed!!!! R.I.P.

I always thought Chuck Close's photo realism reminded me a lot of Seurat's pointillism. Such painstaking brilliance.

@@danielmchenry1000 Wikipedia A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, painted from 1884 to 1886 and in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, is Georges Seurat's most famous work. A leading example of pointillist technique, executed on a large canvas, it is a founding work of the neo-impressionist movement. Is La Grande Jatte a real place? The Island of la Grande Jatte is located at the very gates of Paris, lying in the Seine between Neuilly and Levallois-Perret, a short distance from where La Défense business district currently stands. Although for many years it was an industrial site, it is today the site of a public garden and a housing development.

I find his early black and white airbrush work to be the most remarkable. If you walk up to it they seem to be rushed, stand back 10 feet or so and they are nothing short of perfection. It's difficult for the non artist to see his technique. There is just a little bit of thin coats of airbrush, but also chalk, paint brush and sand paper usage. II believe this one is part of the Minneapolis Institute of Art , nothing short of remarkable 5:30

His most-known painting is of Philip Glass, shown several times here. They were also "Close" friends. Peace

I think all these verbal sexual harrasement accusations are unfortunate but banning a genius because your feelings got offended it's a stretch, he was on a wheel chair for 30 years for god sake all the so call journalists should be ashamed of themselves..Artist like him are a gift to humanity and they aren't perfect but unless they really commit a crime let them be and stop trying to tarnish a life long body of work for your political agenda, the world will be filled with Kardashians and Instagram fashion influencers if these feminist continue their war on influential white male

Most people seem to like it, but after a long lifetime of fine art, advanced degrees, many years of galleries and museums, etc etc ... I have to differ. I never liked Chuck Close's work and in fact do not consider him an artist. A room full of oversized "physiognomically unprepossessing" faces blown up from photographs. That is not art in my book. It's a whole career based on a crutch.
