I have read his autobiography as well. I was honored to know that I was related to him and get to read about his exploits in WW2 and in the years afterwards. I got to learn a few things about him from family related to him long before the book came out too. But some of the other things I didn't know about either.

Seen the movie. Liked it a lot. Lived through some of those times and I recall that you'd see or hear on the radio or TV snippets of these doings. It's likely hard to understand for the newer generations that the math that made all of this possible was done with, more or less, with a sheet of paper a pencil, and a pocket slide rule. Them were the days indeed.

Gen Yeager came up the hard way, he was an aircraft mechanic that went to flight school in WWII and had that naturally flying ability that made him an ace over Europe. He was shot down over France and smuggled back to England where he pleaded not to be sent back home with Gen Eisenhower as was customary until the war ended. He made General because he was an inspiration to everyone including politicians.

Chuck Yeager was a true American hero. First human to fly at supersonic speed way back in 1947. 73 years ago. In my opinion, he was the first pioneer astronaut though he never got to fly in space. It would’ve been nice if NASA had given him a chance later in life to fly on the space shuttle like they did John Glenn.

@@kbanghart Well there is nothing documented that saying that they did. He was not one of the original seven mercury astronauts. Or Gemini. Or Apollo. It is possible that may be all he wanted to do was fly fast jets. And there certainly is nothing wrong with that. Pushing the envelope is one of the definitions of progress.

Chuck Yeager was on the US government committee to select the first astronauts in the 1950s .He was part of the group that setup NASA back then it was called NACA. People also dont know that he was a fighter pilot in WW 2 and was shot down over France and escaped by crossing over the Pyraness mountains into Spain pretending to be a French citizen then took a ship back to England and rejoined his fighter squadron and continued flying in the war.

I had the privilege to fly with Mr. Yeager. None of these fictionalizations come close to what a Lion he was. He is the antithesis of "never meet your hero". He was a legend among men to a 14 year old boy. He treated me like an equal (of course I was not). He will always be legend in my history.
