Wattie is easily one of my favorite f1 drivers ever, a shame he is known by such few f1 enthusiasts.

I always looked out for Wattie when a GP was on, not the greatest qualifier in the world, but a fantastic racer.

Whole new respect for John Watson! He's a great pundit, but I thought his wins, bar this one, were standard. No idea he was regarded so highly, seems he deserves a bit more reverence

I personally rank him among 15 greatest McLaren drivers, and top 10 since 1980s. Top 15 Brit for me (in F1) as well.

Not only Watson's lunatic comeback. He did the same thing year prior starting from 17th place at Detroit Downtown (not Belle Isle to mistake with).

He's also a treasure to listen to on the coms box of a lot of sportscar races.

Had the absolute pleasure of meeting John at a Performance Driving Course at Silverstone, very quuck witted and funny man and an absolute gent. Took me round Silverstone in a saloon car, chatting calmly away whilst cornering at 130mph with 1 hand on the wheel. Legend.

John Watson was a boss on street circuits. He doesn't get enough credit for just how good he was at charging

Watson was an absolute boss in race trim. One of the most underrated drivers in history when it comes to wheel to wheel racing. And incredibly fun to watch.

Watson is one of best from his era. I used to think he was basically forgotten, until recently, a modern F1 video came out and it appears Kevin Magnussen knows and appreciates Wattie.

My first F1 race was Detroit in 1982. John Watson was so brilliant that day! Other standouts were Eddie Cheever in his Matra powered Talbot-Ligier, Keke Rosberg (Williams), and Didier Pironi (Ferrari).

Watson matched and beat prime Lauda in the same car i think that says a lot on him as a driver

Also N/A had advantage in street circuit at that time as they have no lag. Also, acceleration is more important than top speed in street circuit

I have always liked John Watson.........his driving, his attitude - my little brother was a Jim Clark fan... hence motor racing was an element in our household and it quickly replaced football (West Ham!!) in my life! JW- brilliant!

It's sad that Sergo Perez' incredible last-to-first win of the sakhir GP last year isn't included, because he didn't start outside the top 10. But he was dead last after lap 1, so it really ought to be up there as one of the great drives in F1

And yet nobody nowadays remembers it. Shame. Wattie was such a good driver. I dare say he was better than Mansell.
