Thanks for unraveling the distinctions, motivations/objectives and approaches to depicting the past in reconstructions/presentations/replicas. Athens is so iconic and noted. I was always fascinated by the combination of the high hill with the various monuments on it, especially the Parthenon (when I earned of the complexities and visual adjustments, I was overwhelmed by the technical sophistication and genius (the result of which , made it my favourite building-still I would come to know only the smallest part since so much of the structure was no longer present). Between war, the degradation in time, and British vandalism (Elgin et al.), what did remain, was a tantalising collection of what had been. The advent of 3D modelling, made possible the nearly impossible and the “what if” factors. In an age prolific with photographs/films and realistic representations, it is easy to Forget 3D does not have to be accurate even if one’s eyes interpret what is seen, as truth or a reality It is impressive that 3D can give us an opportunity to experience something that does not exist exactly as depicted. It is fascinating whether it is Hogwart’s castle or the Parthenon/Acropolis. Definitely, I appreciate that this video has delineated the possibilities and the whys. Thank you.

The historical accuracy to be considered in this case is not about the precise positioning of buildings or the accuracy of the layout or the size of the city. It is not even important whether a specific building was actually there in that year or not built yet. What really concerns those who wonder if the recostruction of these ancient cities could reflect the real ones is the overall look, the aesthetic design of the urban planning: streets and squares, paving, plants and green areas, walls and stairways, fountains (there are also ornamental pools in the game), statues and columns along the main streets (not only in temples), curtains and awnings, panels for climbing plants, braziers and so on. In the game all these elements provide to create a rich and stratified civilization dedicated to art and beauty. Now, looking at ancient ruins as they appear today certainly doesn't help us understand, we are led to think in a minimal way. We automatically view this kind of reconstructions (for entertainment purposes) as embellished and enriched to make things look cool but far from reality, which is basically much more simple, flat and boring. But is this really the case? Could ancient Greece, cradle of civilization, not really be as it was recreated in the game? Or for scientific reasons that I am unaware of (I am neither an archaeologist nor a historian) it's to be ruled out with certainty?

Were the modern steps leading upto the Propylae commissioned by Claudius in 52AD? I thought in 430BC the road to the acropolis was just a dirt road/ramp up. Can you say if it's true about Claudius and the Propylaea steps?

Yes indeed it's true, although the modern steps are a reconstruction. Check this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYWakKKfbp1omsk
