An Archaeologist Reacts to Assassin's Creed Odyssey (Complete) | Cincinnati Art Museum
Kathleen Lynch from the University of Cincinnati's Classics Department joins us to look at Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
NOTE: Earlier uploads of parts 1 and 2 of this video were unfortunately cut-off suddenly at the end. This complete version combines both videos and the missing footage.
Part 1: • An Archaeologist React...
Part 2: • An Archaeologist React...

Kathleen was responding to a pre-recorded video that Russell made (before knowing what she would comment on), which is why it seems like he is rushing past things. We won't make that mistake again!

I really like how excited she gets when seeing certain things. I have a thousand hours into playing this game so far. People laugh when they ask how my day was and I reply "I spent some time visiting ancient Greece". I play games like this because I am disabled and rarely physically leave my small apartment. Thanks for making such a great game that allows me to continue being an adventurer.

When I played Odyssey I always had my friend who is a Greek and Latin philologist explain things to me on Discord. He didn't know this game existed and when I told him I was playing a game on Ancient Greece he was SO interested. I showed him the game and he was absolutely amazed. He would ask me every now and then "where are you now?" and then he would tell me stories or myths about the places I was visiting in game. It was a cool experience haha

Being an archaeologist myself, and History nerd in general, and having played Assassin's Creed since the very first one, Origins and Odyssey blew me away. The detail is just nuts, and the overall accuracy shows a lot of historical research went into this (Hollywood take a note on how it's done).

It would be great to have like an archaeologist commentary that you could switch on while playing the game.

This was really intresting! But imagine her playing the game, it would take her probably 1000 hours to finish the main story lol

Make more videos with her or other specialists walking through different locations & islands in the game.

I would definitely watch more of her commenting on Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. (Especially if you dropped a note to Russell to not rush by or look away from something she's commenting on. It'd be even better if Kathleen could drive, but I'll understand if she doesn't quite feel comfortable moving with the controller.)

I need to see the reaction of her friend seeing his dissertation work in a best selling video game, if he doesn't already know.

They should redo this with live game play, allowing her to take her time explaining things...

Odyssey was the first Assasin's Creed game I played and I LOVED how historically accurate the game is. It would be awesome to have more of these walkthrough videos for different locations with an archaeologist.

The lore of the Assassin's Creed games are that the player is "experiencing" the world via their ancestor's point of view through mitochondria memory accessed by a fictional device call the Animus. I like to think the "Disney" view of the worlds, the inaccuracies and compressed timelines are caused by memory bleed from all the other data stored in our mitochondria through the millennia. It helps with immersion and fills the gaps and supports the presence of some of the fantastical creatures in some of the games etc. Just my humble opinion. I'd be elated if I were a historian to see the ancient world as it might have been, in such detail and care.
