From childhood adversity to star of the best women’s rugby team in the world

Rugby Sevens is a sport like no other. It the most diverse, exciting and unexpected sport on the planet. It’s players, coaches and fans have unique stories - of dedication, of hardship and of sheer ambition - that are unmatched in any other sport. In the world’s most surprising sport we tell those stories.
Ruby Tui never had anything come easy. A fractured childhood was spent between homes. She knew that her life could go down two paths, and that the wrong one could be disastrous. Rugby was the force that guided her down the right path.
She has gone on to become one of the best rugby sevens players in the world. Star of the all-conquering New Zealand Black Ferns. Her incredible dedication and hard work has taken her from early challenges to top of her sport.

I just watched this video after the NZ Women’s Sevens team won the Olympic Gold!! Ruby’s right, the Women’s team are an inspiration, they work hard, play hard, have sacrificed so much to get where they are. Each player comes across so grounded, so approachable (typical of Kiwi’s) and they represent NZ with great pride, heart and soul. So glad NZ Rugby has got it so right for the women’s game. Ruby and the rest of the NZ Seven’s team have inspired not only NZ but a host of nations watching the Olympics. Thank you Ruby and co. 🙏👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you for sharing your story Ruby, it is beautiful and inspiring. I’ve always looked up to the black ferns when recovering from injury, or even when depression hits and I need some motivation to train. I volunteer at the Langford seven’s event as the Spanish team’s TLO, and every time I see the black ferns on tournament week, I am always mesmerized because I am looking at the people who inspire me in real life. I’ve never come up to say hi because I want to be respectful and because my heart is usually beating out of my chest, but this year I hope I can muster up the courage to say hi!
