The temporary wooden support used whilst constructing an arch was usually called "Centering" and some of the support stones can still be seen on a few structures.

I was very fortunate to visit Renzo Piano's new basilica for Padre Pio at San Giovani Rotundo in Italy a few years back. It makes the Bari Stadium look simplistic in comparison. Its a massive, modern building with fascinating arches combined with the spacious external concourse approach. Even the golden cross above the altar is an amazing work of art in itself. Well worth a visit if your'e in the area, even if, like me, you are not religious.

The demonstration with the three boxes was entirely wrong!!! The boxes have a rectangular cross section and were held in place by friction due to the pressure from left and right, he had to apply constantly. The actual arch's pieces have a trapezoidal cross section and the key stone (center) works as a wedge. No friction is necessary here. It could be soaking in oil and still work. His little box model wouldn't. I hate when doc presenters have no understanding of what they try to explain the audience!

Are you implying that if Kodak made trapezoidal film boxes they would still be in business?
