After Steve Nash left, Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs to 7 straight seasons of at least 50 wins. He did so without having a single All-NBA teammate, and only 3 All-Star teammates. Dirk's stretch from 2005 to 2011 is arguably the greatest 7 season floor-raising run in NBA History The 2011 run is up there with greatest championship runs in history specifically because he put that team on his back. Beating the Young Thunder trio, sweeping the champion Lakers, and then the Superteam Heat. The sad thing if Dirk hadn’t got that title in 2011 he would have been remembered like (shudder) Carmelo Anthony and the like.

Dirk should arguably have 3 MVP awards instead of just one. The aforementioned 7 straight seasons of leading the Mavs to 50+ wins with only 3 All-Star teammates during that entire stretch coincided with Nash's winning of back-to-back MVP awards in '05 and '06. If people really looked into it, they would've seen that Dirk's case could've challenged Nash's both times. Also, I disagree. Dirk would've still finished above Carmelo in all-time rankings without that 2011 title. Better and more impactful player, better stats, better leader, more success while having less, more individual accomplishments, etc.

I think a big detail that you’re also forgetting is that Deron Williams was another huge name besides Dwight Howard that they were going after. They missed on Deron Williams the first time, when he went to the Nets. So it was kind of one of those things that I noticed that the Mavericks would miss on those players the first time when they were at the peak of their powers, only to then get them when they were not really in their prime anymore (ex DeAndre Jordan)
