It would be awesome to have Dr. Robin Dugall at the Unfettered Word Conference. Love the conversation...

I think the LCMS needs to get back to traditional services instead of 1970's knock offs. Many young people today are looking for Truth and traditional values. (The Catholic Latin mass is growing like crazy.) One of our strengths in the LCMS is the Liturgy and the Divine Service. We should be offered the Lord's Supper in this service every week. Also, we need to explain what we believe in simple clear language... not Lutheran catch phrases. I have been listening to Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller on KZbin. He explains things so well and after 28 years of being in the LCMS church I finally understand things I never did before because he actually explains things.

Thank you so much for this very enlightening and thoughtful conversation. I grew up a confessional Lutheran and in my heart I will always be that. -however you are soooo right. In this post Christian world most people we meet don't have the slightest idea about what the denominations mean. What they need first and foremost is to know who Jesus is and how He wants to be their Savior and Lord. I love that there is an actual Pastor for discipleship. I could go on and on. I got to know about your videos after my friend Scott Seidler spoke on this podcast or Vlog. Fun fact-Scott grew up ALC and ELCA before deciding to go to LCMS seminary.

Interesting discussion: A point I am trying to understand: Early Rev. Dugall says he left the ELCA because of red flags, but later sounds like he is arguing that there isn't a difference in denominations (chapter: irrelevance of denominationalism). That leaves me asking why leave the ELCA and join the LCMS?

He said no difference in Lutheran specific beliefs such as Jesus being in the wine and bread for communion. The ELCA differs in actually holding to Christian beliefs such as marriage being only between a man and a woman.

Hi there! This is Robin - the short of it is that I left the ELCA not intending to join the LCMS but because of what I perceived as their growing embrace of what is now being called progressive ideology and theology. I sensed in the institutional structure and clerical training that there was a weakening of a view of scripture that sees the Bible as the sole authority of faith and practice in the Christian life and community. There was an intentional desire to integrate values, mores, and ethical standards that aligned more with changing liberal culture and ever-expanding secularism than with clear scriptural directives especially in the arena of human identity, sexuality, abortion "rights," as well as other issues. In addition, there was also a growing tolerance within the denomination for understandings of the Christian faith that were not tethered to the history of the Jesus following movement or a creedal/confessional foundation. Lastly, I believed that there was a growing hierarchical elitism within the leadership of the denomination that desired to impose values and practices upon local congregations that were contrary to what those churches embraced. Why I joined the LCMS is another story. I'll stop there...if you want to continue to "chat," email me - rdugall@mac.com.

@@rdugall I left the ELCA back in the 80s when my pastor prayed to the great spirit thanking him for rivers of this world that he called the holy hoops. I looked around smiling during that prayer but all others were still praying right along with him. I was in total disbelief.

The ELCA is extremely congregational; nothing is ever really "imposed" on the local congregation by the denomination. Also (picky point) it's the Evangelical Lutheran Church IN (not "of") America. A small preposition with a big difference; it's good (and respectful) to have your facts straight. And it's the "Episcopal" Church not the "Episcopalian Church." These types of errors make it seem like your guest might not know what he's talking about. The old saw that liberal churches will disappear very soon while conservative churches are simultaneously flourishing is belied by the rapid decline of the LCMS as compared to the ELCA-which is certainly declining as well-just not as rapidly.
