FROM FAILURE TO SUCCESS - Autumn Landscape Photography in the Lake District

Crikey I attempted filming in the Langstrath Valley only to be sent packing with my tail between my legs in absolutely horrendous conditions. Cue a rethink and plan B, I revisited a rather special location above Derwentwater that I've been coming to for a few years inspired by landscape great Joe Cornish. Come along for some more special colour in the Lake District.

Morning Stuart, As always you managed to produce some cracking images but the last two looking back to Borrowdale was just superb. With regards to the weather, I remember a few years ago I wanted to hike Coniston old man but I got drenched within 30 mins of leaving the van. Even with water proofs on I was soaked to my skidders. As you say, you have to know when to quit. Take it easy bud and stay well 👋

Those last two shots looking to Borrowdale as spectacular Stuart. Love it. I'm gutted that I've not been able to get up there this Autumn (Tier 3, now lockdown!). Seeing the amazing colours in your video pleases me that someone got to enjoy and capture them. Amazing drone footage too as others have said. There's always next year for me :)

Great video Stuart and beautiful photography. We all bitch about the weather but it always makes for stunning pictures in Autumn. I had a camper van trip to the Lakes last week to photograph Buttermere, Crummock and Loughrigg Fell/Tarn. In-between the storms I got some good conditions and photo's but I think, (not edited yet) my best images were taken in pouring rain in crummock woods.

Thanks Andy yes it can end up that way - rain generally for woodland isn’t a bad thing and is often as good as mist. Problem I had wasn’t so much the photography but the filming on top made it impractical in those conditions sadly

Meant to dive in for some time, but finally caught up with your channel. Such a Great video... so much sensible, informed, practical advice. Borrowdale in late October is on my bucket list... and this has just confirmed that as a sensible plan. Ps. Langstrath is an amazing valley, well worth your talents to explore. I walked through last year, and the upper valley has incredible landforms.. but is hours walk out. But the lower valley is also fab. Not a quick win, but I’d love to see what you would make of it.

Borrowdale is one of my most favourite places in the Lake District never more so than during autumn - wish I was there. Fantastic colours expertly captured. May I be controversial and say that I prefer the shot without the side lighting? Great vlog.

Cheers for watching mate - no not at all as I mentioned I preferred the flatter version in the field, after processing I preferred the more colourful one though I’ve been back and forth with it. I suspect the bright one may work as a good black and white which I might try

That was a great episode Stuart, the images were stunning as was the drone footage. Getting the same wet weather up here in Scotland at the moment and likewise, I think the autumn season might be coming to an end soon

I can see why that area is one of your favourite locations to be in at this time of year. How's Bowder Stone looking at the moment? I was half expecting some of this video to be from there, but not for long. Some cracking images, including the one you clipped from your drone footage. Lastly, my only hope is that there are still some leaves on the trees as it looks as though the weather is going to improve somewhat once we get into November. I'm penciling in some visits to two different woods local to me to check how the autumn colours are coming along. Seems very dependent on the species of tree so far.

Hi Ian the colour in that area is very similar to last year, great colour though the weather will be curtailing it somewhat I think. Meant to settle down from Monday onwards so hopefully enough will have survived

Don't know why you bother mentioning Joe Cornish, Stuart - I think your photos are better than his, to be honest. I cannot see any rhyme or reason in his composition of that portrait shot - my eye doesn't know where to go: the lakes, back left; the trees; the heather bush front centre. It's all a bit of a mess IMO.
