I feel like he paid for his gang members because his mother never took care of him and his brother. A divorce is devastating for children and then to have your mother abandon you with no food/care when you're only 9/10 years old? He was forced to become an adult and make money, and that usually leads to the streets for children. While his mother abandoned him, he didn't abandon his gang members. Maybe he was creating his own family? Becoming the responsible figure he never had? Who knows. It sure doesn't seem like his father could do much when the mother left. But it's amazing how he turned his life around. When the mother of his kids left, he stepped up the way his parents didn't. History isn't repeating itself in this family. Many people don't get the chance to break the cycle. And look what happened? Even when he left the gang, the members still wanted to give back to him and his children.

Humans naturally seek something to fill an empty space in themselves. For example, if you're hungry, you eat, if you're thirsty, you drink, if nobody loves/likes/cares for you, you start loving yourself instead. In his case, he didn't have a "proper" family. So that "empty space" in himself was filled with his gang members, who he treated like family. It's like completing a puzzle. If there's a missing piece, you find it, and fit it in the puzzle, where it belongs.

My dad was also a gangster when he was young and also had a bad childhood. But had his way on getting a degree although he spent 8 years in college. He still has this alpha mentality that awes me everytime i witness it. My father never gets nervous on serious happenings/ or flinched when something dangerous happens, and he has this presence of mind that he's always quick on making correct decisions abruptly. That's why I always take my father's advice, even though sometimes I might say that "that's absurd, that probably won't happen", but because of what my father went through on his days, he have seen a lot, and my dad's convictions always turns out correct, he was just 10 steps ahead.

His son still doesn’t look 100% well but I expect leukaemia gave his little body a good kicking and he lost his smile too. His daughter looks adorable. It must’ve been hard for her too when her Daddy was at the hospital so much. I know when someone has chemo their immune system is suppressed leaving them open to catching any bug so I imagine they couldn’t go in the same room as the boy for fear of passing on an unknown infection. I cannot imagine how they coped. Lol at the daughter scowling at the camera at the end.

He’s a good man who overcomes all the odds in his life from childhood to fatherhood. He loves his kids more than himself. Not only must he play the roles of both parents, raising the children and seeing to their everyday needs, he found inner strength and tenacity to deal with a son stricken with cancer. Sometimes when life is not kind to us, we do not wallow in self-pity and lose hope. What matters is we learn to accept and deal with it. Learn to smile even in the face of adversity and make the impossible possible. Life is still beautiful when these adversities actually show us where the love is.

"Almost all medical expenses were covered" (by the government). This was also the case when I had emergency surgery in Japan. This would be a completely different story if it happened in the US.

In most european countries it should be the same, and the level of treatment in here in europe is generally good, in 1st world standards. At least that's how it is in Finland, for now. Might change towards USA model thanks to right wing people.
