Is anyone else a fan of citrus? 🍊 What types do you grow?

I would love a lemon tree one day when I'm not renting, we don't even have any neighbours with trees where we can ask for some!

I have a beautiful 15yo lime tree that fruits all through autumn to spring. I'm trying to grow a dwarf mandarin. I've only had it a year and sadly had to transfer it a few months ago so it's going to be a while until I see any signs of fruit.
@SustainableHolly2 жыл бұрын
I had to transfer my lime to where it is now and it shot away after receiving more sunlight. Sending good vibes to the mandarin! 🍊

Do you have any local community pages? They can be great for swapping and trading 💚

Love citrus, we have a Meyer lemon tree, and a lemon/lime tree. My other lime tree and mandarin still hasn’t produced any fruit, maybe next year 🍋 🍊

For people wanting raised garden beds like the ones in video use a filler in the bottom to save soil. Use off cuts from trees,leaves,sticks etc to save on cost of soil. You can get wood logs etc free online when they cut trees down. Some other channel on here puts used bread grates in the bottom, agi pipe with fabric and sand to make it a self wicking bed with a drainage pipe on the side which is adjustable to keep water in or let it drain. I use to have a huge yard and I made my own compost with grass clippings and vegetable scraps and leaves etc from the gum trees. I would mow an area to nothing to start a new bed and put garden edging down and newspapers or cardboard wet it and add my compost it made the plants very happy. You have beautiful gardens 🌻. I would like to plant some citrus too, also avocados. I saw there is a miniature tree of them so that will suit me as I only have small courtyards now.
@SustainableHolly2 жыл бұрын
Yes! That’s a great way to reduce the upfront soil costs. Then just need to top them up as they drop. Which is what I did with my pallet planters. Ohhh yes avocado is a dream!! 🥑
@wazowski67092 жыл бұрын
Hügelkulture, I use this technique in all of my raised beds, saves on fill but also acts as a slow release fertiliser. The soils settles a little each season, but I top up with compost & chook manure 👍

Lime, lemon, kaffir lime, we also have a huge bush lemon tree. We have a huge curry leaf tree and a moringa or drumstick tree, even though they aren't citrus. We harvest our own moringa and dry it and make powder for capsules.

@@SustainableHolly, I couldn't agree more. We just had a friend who dropped off two huge bags of limes for us. I dehydrated a heap of them for teas. Also made a heap into lime powder. Then vacuum sealed and froze 80 of them for later use.

Termites are pretty chronic in Bunbury too. They've been systematically eating the poles of the greenhouse Dad put up about five years ago. I found out last year that burying your citrus peels around the base wooden stuff deters them cos they don't like the citric acid & last summer was the first time in a few years I didn't have termites in the greenhouse! :O)

This is amazing, I wish I had the space for something like this. I started a container garden with old eskies, and recently saw a KZbin video where someone used an old shell kid pool so I'm trying that next. I really want to grow beans but my first round of seedlings got destroyed by slugs. It may be too late to plant more but I'm going to try anyway, and also snow peas!

I love container gardens! Plus you can pick up some amazing things on marketplace. Even free fruit trees! It gets quite addictive searching 🫣😅

Hi Holly, wow I’m so inspired. I have a tiny unit and have lots of pots and one bed. I have had trouble with caterpillars little black and green ones. Would you know of any natural spray or deter ants for these? I lost my carrots they just disappeared and the caterpillars ate all the leaves off my beetroot. I’m loving my garden, it keeps me active as I’m a disability pensioner, and it’s good for my mental health, keeps me moving and out in nature, and of course helps in the pocket with my food bill. Im in Baldivis Perth, and love that your also in Perth so I follow what you plant. I want to invest in some fruit tree next, I will keep them in big pots. Would you know if the top leaves are eaten, will they 1 regrow and 2 do they keep growing under the ground. Or have I lost them? Thanks so much Holly and I’m looking forwards to your next video. 🌸🌿🌱🎍🪴🌾🍃🍂🍁🍄🌻

Oh no 🙈 they can demolish plants in minutes! Could try a chilli and garlic spray. If there are no leaves and none seem to be forming it may be gone. I would keep an eye over a few days and dig them up if there’s no action. Gardening is amazing for mental health it’s my favourite way to help switch off from the crazy in the world. 🌿🌱💚🌸
