What route did Lehi and his family take take to get to the America's? Is it even possible ?
The history channel came out with a documentary called “Who Really Discovered America” In it they mentioned the Book of Mormon, talked about how it wasn't possible for the people who came out from to make it. But what model were they using? And how was it possible for the Phoenicia to do it?
Is it possible for the currents to take us to America without perishing? Join us as we faithfully discuss all of these possibilities and the evidence behind it in episode 2 of this 5 part series.

Lehi's sailing is documented in Herodotus Book 4, Chapter 40-42. His sailing was a circumnavigation of Africa. Compare the reference above to Alma 22:32. Both describe "Desolation", a narrow neck of land, the distance across the narrow neck, the "sea to sea" on either side of the narrow neck, and the fact that the "land South" is surrounded by water. Herodotus is describing Africa and the Isthmus of Suez and so is Alma 22:32.

More important than prevailing ccean currents, are the prevailing winds (known as trade-winds.). These too have remained unchanged and predictable for thousands of years. There are inumeral books written on the subject and a modern one is called "World Cruising Routes" by Jimmy Cornell. I believe you'll find the. east/west route around the Cape of Good Hope and North to North America, listed and a common tradewind sailing route.

I agree. Captain Beale said the Winds are more important than the currents.
@jamesbaldwin7676

There is a 4 knot head-current rounding the Cape of Good Hope traveling east to west, so ships struggle there, especially the inshore route. A favorable wind, however, can carry ships fully around. This might be a place where a ship could be blown back for some days and encounter storms. Once in the Atlantic though, we have mostly favorable winds and currents for a Northwest sailing passage. (Yes, I'm an amateur sailor.)

Good mapping of the planet's surface currents. An additional point: In the fall of the year the monsoon winds blow southward over the Indian Ocean. This is generally harvest time also, so provisioning their ship would have been happening the same time the winds were favourable.

Abraham was a descendant of Shem through Noah and they were fair skin. The Egyptians of that day were descended from Ham, son of Noah,, whose wife was Egyptus and was dark skinned which made the Egyptians dark skinned.
@riannelson67
@riannelson67 6 ай бұрын
You are probably correct. Skin color has variables like climate, genes, and many other things so we shouldn't put much emphasis on it. Ham was likely light skinned but Egyptus was righteous enough to be saved as well. We know skin color has nothing to do with righteousness or not. Remember Joseph of Egypt married Aseneth, daughter of the Egyptian priest Potiphar, as the wife of Joseph and mother of Ephraim and Manasseh. She may have only been raised in an Egyptian family but her blood may have been from Shem or Japeth.

Look up Thor Heyerdahl in Britannica. He proved, back in the 40s, that it was possible for ancient peoples to cross the oceans. "In 1969 Heyerdahl and a small crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to within 600 miles (965 km) of Central America in a facsimile of an ancient Egyptian reed boat, the Ra, thus confirming the possibility that the pre-Columbian cultures of the Western Hemisphere might have been influenced by Egyptian civilization."

You can sail both ways up the Mississippi. To sail south you can use the south current and/or wind of course. To sail north you would have to use wind. Since the river flows slow enough, the wind can push a sailboat upriver.

If I hadn't already learned this amazing information from other presentations, I wouldn't have been able to follow much of what you were teaching. Why would an all knowing god send them on a journey 4 times as long as the near perfectly straight west path past Gibraltar? they had the Liahona for navigation. Won't reliance on device guidance be better than ocean currents, as a spiritual education?

Who do you think made the ocean currents? Also, why did He make them go back to jerusalem over and over again. Efficiency wasnt the goal. God was giving them many opportunities to build their character and grow their faith

All of this is great info. My question is: since the Lord showed Nephi to build a ship unlike anything built by men, how does this relate with the Phoenicians? Thank you for all of your great work.
@spence3101

That is was possible with technology and know how at the time. Thus even if God showed Nephi some special way of building a boat it is feasible without a miracle from God.

Nephi may have been shown some special way to keep the ship tighter or the sail better etc. Maybe it had to do with the shape of the vessel as well. All we know is that the Lord took care of them in building, sailing and landing.

Greg Matsen as speaker? No thank you. All he has to offer is his opinion that the events in Genesis (like the creation and fall of Adam) are only as real as Lehi's dream. It's no different than your invite to the baptist preacher who was supposed give us his testimony of the Book of Mormon. All I heard from him was that Joseph Smith was "a prophet just like Muhammad and the Pope and Gandhi and . No way was I going to say amen to him no matter how hard he pushed the FIRM foundation audience to participate. His revivals at the FIRM conferences was surprisingly very successful. Many loud shouts of amen from the crowd. Please don't dilute the speaker list further or the reasons for attending with the likes of podcaster Greg Matsen. These days he is a dime a dozen, even after inflation.

It appears that Jerusalem was is Africa. The middle east location was invented by the Romans. Here is where Abraham went. "And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south." He went South. Well what is South from Egypt? Sudan, and Africa. Interesting that they use the same terms as Book of Mormon. Abram went up out of Egypt - so up is altitude, just as they use in the Book of Mormon. But they went South in direction. So Abraham was African and therefore black. So Isaac, Jacob and the family was black. That means Nephi was black or copper skinned as well.

Abram (his birth name before being renamed Abraham) is the third son born to a man named Terah living in Ur of the Chaldees in Mesopotamia. Remember Abraham descended from Shem the lineage of the Lord's priesthood through Eber (Hebrew). He walked many places which has nothing to do with his whiteness or blackness. We talk too much and worry far too much about skin color. I know you already know this, but one of our most important tests is to love all and not judge any one and not worry about color.

@@riannelson67 I agree but what group of people have been a hiss and a byword, enslaved and sold all over the world, for 400 years. The curse as laid out in Deuteronomy and Leviticus 26. If we do not recognize the skin tone of the sons of Jacob, how will we smarten up, stop being Brigham racist and get the Book of Mormon to Lehi's seed and the true Judah. Yes the righteous of all people will be redeemed but the gathering has to take place. To gather we have to recognize who they really are.

The entire BOM takes place in Africa. It is the history of Ethiopian Jews. Lehi comes down to the Red Sea then 3 days to a river. The River is the Nile. The Nile is 3 days from the Red Sea. This was confirmed by Carsten Niebuhr when he traveled between Cairo and Suez on Aug 28th to the 30th 1762. He said "Suez is 3 days distant from Cairo". The Map of Arabia was updated with the words "3 day journey" between the Nile and the Red Sea in 1794. Lehi's "river camp" is on Elephantine Island. This is where he built the altar (Jewish temple discovered there from 600 BC.) and had the Tree of Life Vision. Please read Jeremiah 44, the Jews being destroyed in the Tree of Life Vision are the same ones from Jer 44 that are migrating into Egypt. This is what Lehi did. Both refer to them as "multitudes". The Tree of Life vision is the solution to the destruction in Egypt. The vision commands he follow the Nile, South, to Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the source of the Nile and the location of the Garden of Eden according to Genesis 2:13. The 'head" of the River is mentioned in the Tree of Life Vision (1 Nephi 8:14). Of course, the Tree of Life is in the Garden of Eden. When the angel describes the destruction of the Nephites in 1 Nephi 12, the angel says it will happen on the "same" river (1 Nephi 12:16). Again, this is the Nile, in Egypt and the destruction is prophesized in Jeremiah 44. The "fountain mention in that verse is the same fountain. It is now "filthy" because the Nephites were destroyed in Egypt on the Nile. Lehi lived in Ethiopia but in Helaman 3, we read about the Nephites migrating back North to Egypt. The "treeless" land where they build with "cement" and "ship timber" is clearly Egypt. Please read Helaman 3:6 and compare the word "desolation" to the description of "desolation" in Jeremiah 44. They both describe Egypt. Most internal maps of the Book of Mormon lands show "Desolation" right where Egypt should be. These maps show the Land South is Africa. They usually show the Nile River and they show the Isthmus of Suez which is the Book of Mormon "Narrow Neck of Land". The Book of Ether is the Ethiopian Genesis. It describes a migration North to Egypt then they sail to Israel. The Book of Ether shows us how the Biblical Land of Milk and Honey was settled and populated by Ethiopians. These Ethiopians were scattered from Africa and brought cattle and honey with them to Israel. The prophet Omer in Ether 9 is living in Jerusalem when he is forced out. He migrates South, back into Africa and eventually Ethiopia. His journey is similar to Lehi's. Omer is the "prophet of old" that Nephi was talking about in 1 Nephi 1:20. This is why Moroni mentions Omer is "murdered stoned and cast out" in Ether 8:25. Moroni also mentions "coming unto the fountain of righteousness" in Ether 8:26. This is also what Lehi did when he entered Africa. He named an element of the Nile River as the "fountain of righteousness" in 1 Nephi 2:9 after arriving on the Nile after the 3 day journey. He said it flowed into the Red Sea. This is most likely the "Canal of the Pharaohs" that connected the Red Sea to the Nile. Lehi probably said "fountain" where we would say "canal". As a sailor, he would be interested in shipping canals. The "3 day journey" in Alma 8:6 is the same journey Lehi took in reverse. Alma is crossing back into the Middle East. Ammonihah is Ammon in Jordan. Middoni is Midian and the "Land of Ishmael" is Northern Arabia. Google Biblical Land of Ishmael. Alma 24:5 uses the Biblical spelling for Midian. This is very curious. Zeezrom from Ammonihah must be a Zamzummim from Ammon. Please read Deuteronomy 2:20. This is logical once you recognize the significance of the "3 day journey". Lehi did not sail to America. His sailing was a circumnavigation of Africa recorded by Herodotus in Book 4, Chapter 40-42. The geography in that source is identical to Alma 22:32. I can go on about that for hours. Both describe desolation, distance, sea to sea, and claim the "land South" is surrounded by water.
