I'm always suprised by the SE Electronic stuff. Sounded great with the Kickdrum but also sounded the best in the conference situation. For someone who needs to handel both situations on a regular basis, this is the one. I'm sold!
I have used three Shure Beta 91's around my drumset with good results. One in or in front of the kick. I used the Glyn Johns approach with the other two, equidistant from the Snare, aimed at the snare. The one on stage left was placed to the left of the Kick capturing snare, hi-hat, small tom and cymbal, panned hard left. On stage right, aimed at the snare, the mic heard floor tom, ride cymbal and crash, panned hard right. BTY, both toms had no bottom heads which helped the mics hear better stick definition. I used this setup for weekend gigs and enjoyed not having to deal with mic stands.

I had a successful season miking my drums with three Shure Beta 91A's. One was in the Kick. The other two were placed on each side of the kit aimed at the snare drum and measured to be the same distance from the snare and panned hard Right and Left. I got positive comments from Drummer friends that came to hear out band.

Beta 91a with a shoe mount in a dw kick with the factory, non-ported reso head sounds fantastic. You just have to cut a mic cable and run it through one of the air vents in the head and re-solder. Sounds way better than a ported head.

6:20 The Beyerdynamic TG D71c in the mix with the rest of the kit sounds amazing.

clearly the audio technica pro 44 and mx391 weren't designed with the bass drum in mind. great content as always

The MX391 sounds like it's distorting, maybe at the capsule. But the sound, I would use it for something like hip-hop? It's very full and punchy in a dirty kind of way.

The sE Electronics was easily the best sound from the back of the room - sounded almost as good as when you were right next to it. The Crown also sounded decent from the back.

Incredible test, if every mic test was like this it would be way easier to buy gear. I just listened trough this in my regular mixing/mastering setup and it was very easy to understand what all of them mics were doing. SE Electronics sound incredibly good for this application, it's the one mic picking up the best sub-lows, never distorting, and also has very balanced highs. Beyer's offering is the second best for me according to this test, but has very piercing highs so I assume using this to complement a piano sound would be a no go. Sennheiser's would be third, sounds great when mixed in, but rather dull with piercing highs as well.

Speaking of sounds, that's not what it sounds like when I play the drums! I think I'll just stick with the guitar. Another great video, and thanks once again for sharing 🤘

I would have been curious to hear what the bleed is like on the examples with the boundary mics solo’d.

The drum kit sounds great. Please tell me what kind of drums and other microphones you have?

The Pro 44 and MX391 don't seem like they're made to handle being inside of a kick drum given the 114 decibel rating on the first one and the distortion on both of them. The Beyerdynamic and E901 sounded the best in the kick drum here, though the Beta 91 works great too if you have a second mic dedicated to picking up the low end.

We're all these mics mounted on Shu's inside the drum, Or are they on bare wood or a pillow? I hear a lot of movement of the mic inside that's why I ask.

When using for piano where would you place these microphones? On top of an upright? On the floor near the pedals? As a room mic set back from a piano?
@justinhavu Жыл бұрын
On a grand, probably underneath with Gaff tape. On an upright, in the back.

Nice! Pretty good representative samples of the mic characters. Now, can we hear these mics compared without all the noise of the mic cable rubbing on the BD reso port? 😅 Honestly, I dislike the WTS kits for a number of reasons, but he greatest of them - aside from solving a 'problem' that didn't really exist in drum tuning - is probably the inability to use only one head on any drum.
