He said Cullowhee and Sylvia received minimal damage. Beyond there it’s really bad. So many roads and bridges washed out. He said his route to Charlotte, where his mom lives, is impossible to drive. Everyone at school is doing well. “Don’t worry Meemaw, we’re ok here.” So I pass this along.

In some ways I know what you are going through. I lost my mountain cabin to a flash flood 4 years ago. My dog and I had to be airlifted out by a forest service helicopter. During the cleanup a tree fell on me and I was injured. To this day what happened haunts me. Hang in there and stay safe.

Had some big floods since then. Whenever you have that much rain or when we had a huge snow and quick melt, we had flooding. People are always caught off guard and people never want to leave their homes.

Yeah rain from a heavy average storm system, but certainly not to this level. My family are mountain ppl that live up that way. I know what you mean but nobody could've guessed that storm would play out quite like it did. Hopefully they add some new construction on those dams after this. TVA maxed out their abilities to regulate simply due to volume. However, if it wasn't for the dams already there....things would be sooo much worse. Clearly, after all this, it's shown we need additional infrastructure investments o this doesn't happen again.

It’s so beautiful there, chimney and black mountain are basically gone. My mom and kids are in TN where the dam almost went and I’m on the other side of Asheville. No one is getting in or out that way, but at least they have cell service. Have in laws in Pt Charlotte too, they had to sleep in the car on a golf course bridge, the pool was under water but they got lucky in the house. Hope your people are all safe too! 💕

I can totally relate to these people. My heart goes out to them. I lost my home in Iowa in the flood of 2008. My best advice is to apply, apply, apply for every type of assistance that is offered. Programs will become available to you so you need to register with FEMA first. Red Cross will most likely come in and offer gift cards for essentials, amount based on family size. The forms will seem endless but it is worth taking the time to fill them all out. Help is on the way and you will get through it. I recovered in 9 months with help from Federal programs. Sending love and prayers to all affected.

Not really, the vast majority of the time when a hurricane remnant gets to the mountains, it's basically just regular rain. The reason big mountains become small mountains is because it's cold in the mountains. Rain falls and freezes, cracking the rock.

Cells usually work in Eastern North Carolina after we flood. Besides. Up in the mountains, CB range is pretty limited due to the density of trees.

FRS (Family Radio Service) and GRMS radios can work even when cell towers are down because they operate independently of cellular networks. FRS radios use radio frequencies in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band, which allows them to communicate directly with other FRS radios over short distances. So they can be a good option for talking to neighbors and family who are close by.

That local EMD Emergency Management Director, needs to call the predominate Cell carrier, and have them bring in a COW, Celltower on Wheels! They have them truck mounted too. Demand that they do it!

They are. Some areas have gotten some Wi-Fi and internet service back. My grandson attends Western Carolina University and they got Wi-Fi & internet service late this afternoon, Still no cell phone coverage, though. Many towers down. The entire 911 system went down yesterday and I’m not even sure it’s back up, fully.

There are very limited routes for anyone to get into these areas and there are literally hundreds of miles of damage. This isn't an isolated incident. Western NC is closed. Interstate 40 is closed over 100 miles east of Asheville at I-77 in Statesville. Just fyi, they are choppering some things in and this ks going to take a while.

It's still very spotty and comes & goes, but she got in touch with us this a.m. She had to drive a town over, but she managed it. She has trees down all over her property but luckily they missed her house. Electric is out and they said it could be a couple weeks bc the grid is like spaghetti & down all over. They loaded up on gas & cranked the generator & are toughing it out.

Heard from my Black Mountain family, all AT&T cell towers are down. Many mudslides, trees fallen on buildings, water/debris/tree damaged homes/vehicles. Looting at Ingles in Swannanowa with roads flooded. Possible helicopters to fly into Black Mountain with food/necessities.

Helene's track shifted to rhe East before it hit Atlanta, so we were spared the high winds. But we did have lots of flooding around us. We're up a bit higher so were spared from the flooding. My heart and prayers go out to everyone in N. Carolina. Such a beautiful state and good people...prayers for rescue, commmunity, and rebuilding from what was lost. 🙏🙏♥️♥️🙏🙏

Last night my husband and I were talking about the nightmare that hurricane Helene is unleashing on all the states that are in her path, and my husband said, “at least it is not as bad as being at war with a neighboring country”. Later on I thought about what he had said and I arrived at the conclusion that it is a war, a war against nature, and make no mistake, NATURE ALWAYS WINS. I am European, and I have lived in the USA since 45 years after marrying an American. After a couple of years living here I experienced my first hurricane, Gloria, that left NYC in a state of shambles. All day long I remember the windows in our apartment shaking violently and being terrified that they would blow in. By evening when things had died down, I was exhausted. Later, I learned to brace myself for the “Mean Season” between July and October, when one of those monstrous storms can decide to make landfall in your area while you are trying desperately to prepare for it. I learned that there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, that for those long hours you are at the total mercy of mother nature who is going to decide if you will still have a home at the end of the storm, or in some cases if you will still have your life. It is a full blown war against nature, and you are losing on all fronts. Any place that has suffered from a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, a flood, volcanic eruption or landslide looks like a war zone. The trauma that human beings go through after such events is profound and lasting. During my youth in Europe I never had to live through such experiences, and I find myself wanting to go back there in my tired old age, like a weather refugee. Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive, and makes it very unlikely.

Thank you for sharing your story wexperience. We so need to hear different perspectives to understand what our world is experiencing. Having lived in different places throughout the USA, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America I have learnt that as much as we must think relocating from one place to another is not necessarily the answer… much of the time, the place we want to go back to no longer exists…anything like we remember is challenges. Knowing this, one can be thankful to have a place we can call home …and make the most of our time and energy. Our world is suffering wherever we are. Yet, I know we can each make a difference. We each have a Purpose! One moment at a time learning about our neighbors. I am 77 now, having visited Perú for several months late last year to early May, I came away knowing that as much as I thought possible to return to my country of birth and live out my days… this was never going to be possible. My life in the Inland part of the northwest USA, has many challenges yet returning to a place where culturally and economically life is so different would be impossible…at my time in life. I suffer from constant pain which needs to be managed… The quality of healthcare, stress from the country being in constant state of crisis!…finding gentle kind women and men in a state of Alert because people are constantly being assaulted and robbed, their homes invaded by gangs demanding anything and everything. 🙏 if anyone thinks life is better elsewhere I recommend you relocate there for no less than 4-6months. Once the honeymoon period is over or the country you plan to live in shows it’s true challenges then maybe you will return home to the place which has been your little sanctuary even when you thought there was a better place elsewhere. Ones true home is wi but …this little prayer has always helped me. Grant me the serenity to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. Thank you again.

We had a flood go through town here back in 2008 and wiped out thousands of homes and businesses. Then in August 2020, a derecho blew through with 140 hurricane winds... in Iowa. I think almost all the tarps are gone now but there are still some buildings that are still damaged. Some didn't have power for 2 weeks. No cell service, some didn't have Internet for months. We here in Iowa, understand the devastation and are and will be praying for all affected, who can't even read this because the cell towers are still down. May God have mercy on all those affected.

I was in Peterborough Ontario and we got 24 inches of rain in an hour. I know this because the kiddy pool in the back is 24 inches high and it was emptied by me that morning and it was filled to overflowing. There are good size hills in the middle of town and the water was comming up through the manholes, even there the water had no place to go everything was full.
