I have watched many interviews with flood victims. One elderly lady stood out. She indicated that the road beside her river was built entirely upon a foundation of mine tailings. The road and its foundation of mine tailings were completely destroyed along several stretches of the river (somewhere in the Nolichucky watershed). Mine tailings being placed next to a water way is very unusual. Frequently, strong chemical solutions are utilized in the seperation processes, and tailings are generally kept segregated for good reasons. All waterways, public water supplies, and all well water should be tested repeatedly for the next year.
@kowashy03Ай бұрын
for the most part yes products from mines are separated with chemicals. in this case i think when she refers to mine tailings she is referring to large rock/boulder that wasnt ever subject to chemical flotation. i live in the area where there are tons of old mines from before chemical analysis. plenty of people use giant rocks, sand, gravel from the mines for all sorts of things, on their property, under the roads. youll find it everywhere. just rocks edit: even the mines that did chemical separation there is thousands upon thousands of tons of rock left over that was never processed. just sitting there

We haven't even pulled all the dead bodies out of the water yet, and the Cadaver Dogs are dying from the toxicity of both the French Broad and the Nolichucky. They are so polluted with not only the coal tailings & septic, but the nuclear waste dump {there's a superfund site right on the river}no one seems to be talking about. The plastic plant, the mines, the asbestos from most of the older homes that washed away, and much more is never portrayed in this "PBS water report"... The State of NC is still saying under 200 people died, but we all know that's nowhere near accurate. Thankfully I'm at a very high elevation, and my well water and home are fine. We've got solar and have been preparing for years. However those at lower elevations are not. I didn't see anyone from a legacy Media News crew interview the folks who are living on their land in tents, to stop the thieves from stealing, or because they have nowhere else to go. Now, the State is removing children from what's left of their families and homes, if they don't have a 'modern house', and these kids are already traumatized. They need their family, Not a foster home. This is the worst disaster our State and Federal Government has ignored in my 67 years of life... I thought East Palestine OH & Lahaina Maui was bad, but this is much worse. Don't let PBS fool you...

I don't hear many talking about the old Halliburton chemical place above swannanoa either. They left in the 1970s lots of open chemical pits. EPA finally cleaned it up in the late 80s I think and was declared super site because was in ground water for years. Guess what? All those sealed chemical pits were washed away and it's hard telling what else was buried or sitting in these hollers.

Same for the Pigeon River that flows through Cocke County, here in East TN! I've seen it grow from ultra polluted & change into a clean, serene, magical stream within 30yrs. A waterway which had been set-up as Trophy Stream status for fish like Smallmouth Bass which take 10-12yrs just to grow to 12-14 inches! A place that offered astonishing rafting, fishing, and peaceful escape opportunities, has mutated into an unrecognizable monster! Now it's leveled, completely shifted, very shallow, unnoticeable, & trashed! It's going to be a lifetime of working, rebuilding, serving restoration to & for ALL of our communities in TN & NC. We will NEVER forget 2024 when Hurricane Helene hit the Appalachian Mountains!

Im in Upstate South Carolina. My home was completely lost because of Hurricane Helene. Ive never experienced weather and damage like that in my entire life. We get severe thunderstorms with the occasional short lived tornadoes but never anything like the rain and winds that Helene brought. There's so many 50-100+ year old trees that are so big you can't come close to wrapping your arms around the trunk that are on the ground. Completely uprooted with roots the size of my 4 door chevy silverado truck. Then theres a wide path like that goes all around my property of large trees that are leaning over or top halfs broken into and laying against the trees beside them. When we get that specific amount of rain, wind, or ice this winter we're gonna have so many more trees down and damage all over again. Ive been trying to cut as much as i can from the broken ones that are barely dangling due to the tree beside it. I didn't realize how traumatized I actually was due to all of this until a couple weeks ago the wind picked up one day and several limbs were breaking and falling to the ground and I was terrified and on edge all day. I kept praying that nomore trees come down and destroy what i have left or cause injury to me or my kids. My heart breaks for everyone who lost their homes and especially their loved ones bc of Helene and Hurricane Milton. God bless you and I personally thank every single person that volunteered and the ones that traveled from all over the eastern part of the country to help and the ones that risked their own lives rescuing victims. Our government let us down but our fellow citizens really stepped up worked together and helped tremendously. They're still helping and its beautiful to see that theres still so many good people still left. ❤

7ft in 20mins … I can believe it considering how much rain that region got. I’ve seen creeks and rivers rise just as quick in one hour with only 2-3” of steady rain in that amount of time (enough to get in roadways, especially here in Appalachia where rain water is coming down off of mountains causing even more to fill up). Now, imagine 20” inches OR MORE over a period constantly pouring down heavily in these mountainous areas. They didn’t expect this storm to just linger over these areas the way it did. Puts things more into perspective on how and why leaving just wasn’t feasible for all the people who sit and act like “they should have just left! they put themselves in danger staying! hard to feel sorry for them when they ignored the warnings!” … which Sunday-morning quarterbacking is so easy to do with hindsight on how everything turned out, isn’t it? Easy to be perched high in an ivory tower looking down on people with the information we have now … Usually the people that say that or continuously repeat it weeks after this disaster have never dealt with quick rising waters from a flood and it shows - you can’t _just leave_ when: 1 - the warnings never came until it was way too late 2 - that water rose so quickly that you’re better off just staying and trying to get to higher ground around you, if possible, due to roads being covered and bridges being washed away 3 - it’s more dangerous to be out on these roads with high waters rising, think of culverts that go under roadways, those fill up and water starts backing up on both sides of a road, and it’s going to put pressure on spots where the roads can sink/break away 4 - these people have been through floods before, they know where water usually gets up with a lot of rain and know how to prepare, but when it’s this much rain of biblical proportions? no amount of prep a few days in advance would have helped as this was historical for that area, no one knew it would get that bad as it is unlike anything they had ever been through before with floods If anything, the people in ETN and WNC need to have constant news coverage put on and them pressure for them to continue to get help. The amount of citizens across the country that has no idea how bad things really were is honestly just sad. This wasn’t a typical flood from a hurricane storm. This was a whole new monster that has people still living in tents relying on the good will of citizens for help as the government just isn’t there … think of all these small rural towns that haven’t even been mentioned once. They can’t even get to them still. It’s downright shameful how people have just turned their backs away from this region when they need help the most. Seems typical for Appalachia, though … we’re the butt of everyone’s jokes and are easily passed over and ignored on the regular. No surprise when a historical disaster happens, the reality of it all is brushed under the rug to minimize it as much as possible - we’re just a bunch of uneducated rednecks/hillbillies that aren’t worth focusing on.

@@criss3619It takes funding to do that, which isn't available through the local tax base. These areas are being politically and demographically targeted for lesser treatment because of "who" lives there. That was tried here in Florida, too, but the difference is that the blatant discrimination was exposed by whistleblowers, and the very powerful governor of the 3rd most populated state in the country immediately moved to investigate the federal agency perpetrating apparent discrimination. That same discrimination is happening in Georiga, the Carolinas, and Tennessee. It's not by accident, but hateful design to harm members of the statistical majority, specifically.

@@criss3619I’m a resident here. While there are always ways to improve, not much can be done in advance of such a catastrophe. The mountains literally came down on us with tons of rock, trees and other debris. How do you prevent that? Where do you go? I’ve had some people criticizing residents for not evacuating, which is absurd. When every road can become a deadly river of mud, trees, vehicles, etc in a matter of minutes you can’t just leave and hope to get somewhere else safely. You can’t hold back a mountain range no matter how much planning you do.

So, the guardian of the river is crying because the river rose? She looks and sounds unhinged. Why is she surprised-rivers rise. She sounds like a paid puppet. Who funds her service-developers, the tourism industry, or the county? 🤔 Maybe it’s time to address the thousands of miles of unusable creeks and streams in terrible condition from human impact and dog waste. The EPA recommends at least a 200-foot buffer between dog waste areas and water sources like rivers and reservoirs, yet Asheville leaders allow developers to build dog parks right on riverbanks. Every day, I see people letting their dogs defecate near these polluted water systems. It got so bad they resorted to drilling for well water, which turned out to be contaminated too. Meanwhile, Asheville prioritizes concerns over Gaza, Palestine, and the Amazon Rainforest while neglecting their own backyard. Twisted priorities.

The list of toxic substances that are present in the everyday things in our modern lifestyle must run into the thousands.Typical test regimes only test for a handful of substances at a time. There is no way that we're really going to know everything that is mixed into the river bottom silt & riverside soils in every waterway from the Southern Appalachian Mountains down into the Piedmont and, finally, to the coastal plains, estuaries and out to the continental shelf. And all of these toxic substances are going to make their way into the wildlife, vegetation, wells, gardens, farms, and, on windy days, into the air itself. The post 9/11 health problems that first responders suffered from exposure to the debris from the World Trade Center is likely a sample test case of the impact of massive infrastructure destruction on human health. Having lived outside of Asheville for 15 years and hiked many mountain trails, canoed several rivers and had sacred gatherings in the forests, my heart is broken over all aspects of this widespread destruction. Never mind microplastics in almost every part of the natural world, we can now add thousands of other modern toxic pollutants to our beloved planet's ecosphere. And this is just the beginning of the climate change transition from the interglacial temperate era to the overheated greenhouse era. Mega storm systems will be supercharged with heat energy & moisture, and that means record amounts of rainfall during extreme weather events like Hurricane Helene. There is no way that humanity is prepared for what is coming. And even though disasters seem to bring out the best in some of us, it can bring out the worst in others and leave the natural world in even worse condition than normal. Prepping helps one to be as prepared as possible, but even prepping may not be enough when flood waters rise 20-40ft in a matter of a few hours. Very challenging times lay ahead. I hope we find ways to adapt, reclaim and restore our blue water planet to its former glory...

My prayers included along with the multitude of others there has to be out there. God hears. He even hears things through His appointed guardian angels involved. May time march on kindly from here in for those living in Western North Carolina. I like what that one guy said regarding unity. Yes, we ARE all brothers and sisters, not 'political sides' or different 'beliefs'. We are humanity. And we got this, too. United we DO stand. Division of politics was supposed to be kept secret until the ballot box anyways... "Who ya votin' fer...?" "None of your business, I'd tell ya but ya might not like me otherwise!" "Good point, neighbor! Good point!" "May the best person win, right?" "Right, old buddy!" I wish it was still like that nowadays. My personal opinion isn't there to harm your opinion is all I honestly know. I just got the thing is all. I'm me and not it though! I'm glued to me, not any mere opinions that might change over time due to age or insight. Maine said to say "hello" for it, by the way.

Heartbreaking to see the kind of damage the event did down there. Up in the pisgah high country, we got nailed bad too. Sure am glad I got photos of fish top. Hopefully clean up efforts continue and hopefully we can fix all of our waterways as best we possibly can

You're right. I'm in upstate South Carolina. I lost my home due to Hurricane Helene. I am constantly looking for more of the trees to finish falling. Dozens are leaning so much that with enough rain, wind, or ice they're falling down. Then there's twice as many that broke near the top half thats caught against the tree beside it. So again it's just a matter of time until they'll come on down as well.

Regarding the lady who got choked up over trees, they're old friends. There's huge trees in my town that I've seen since I was a kid, and they're gone now. It's okay to grieve over them. There's so much here to grieve over, whether people, animals, towns, rivers. I do wonder, though, because of the old mills that used to be along the rivers well before the EPA was a thing. They dumped all kinds of stuff right down the drains, and now all that muck and mud is dust somewhere downstream.

I'm up in Ashe County. I'm curious. Our well was not overtaken by floods because we live on a hill. I understood I don't need to test water. My curiosity is.. do events like this change the aquifer itself way below the surface?

@markpashia7067Ай бұрын
Shallow wells should be monitored. Deep wells not so much unless compromised. Also depends on the under surface geology. Here in Missouri we have cave systems that can take surface water underground and then pop back out miles away back to the surface in springs. If it is underground long enough and filtered enough it is fine but I lived on a spring where rain twenty five miles away would come out near me two days later. I never used that spring water for anything but showers. The slopes that the water entered were nearly all cattle pasture so E Coli was going into the caves and coming out in my spring. We knew all of this from dye tracing the waterway underground. Not all of the caves were even on the surface but crack in the limestone and sink holes were letting the surface water into the caves and running under a ridge to my area. Strange to not even have rain, sometimes sunny days, but over there would downpour and two days later our spring run would flood out of it's banks.
@hime273Ай бұрын
@markpashia7067 This is in the mountains, most wells are less than 200 feet deep, and are drawing off of water that's over 2,000 feet above sea level. So its not like everybody's drawing off of one massive aquifer.

Your experience in MD may not apply to the soil types and topography of this area.

I so understand her emotion when she is talking about how nothing looks the same. I experience the same disoriented feeling whenever I go down to Mexico Beach and Cape San Blas, even though hurricane Michael hit there in 2018. So many of the trees were toppled, and those that weren't have died from the exposure to salt, and so few sand dunes are left. It is a very unsettling feeling to see something that was so familiar now changed drastically.
