If you have any interest in how to air-dry lumber straight from the sawmill, this is the process that I have worked out for my little operation.

Adding a fan, or two is a really good idea. Keep the air circulating to aid in drying, and to cut down on any mold that might want to move in. A good fan is very inexpensive to run 24/7- 365. Love your content. You've carved out a great life for yourself. Well done, young man.

Thanks for the info, and the compliment! I have had a few cheapy Wal-Mart plastic box fans in there in the past, but they end up getting knocked over and self destruct. I'd be open to suggestions on other fan options.

@@GunflintDesigns Dreo makes high quality fans, but they're more for home use I would think. I'd search for something industrial that has an oscillation feature. Something made to withstand the elements. Take care.

You are so lucky to have access to a portable sawmill. Just wondering, if your storage was insulated and had a dehumidifier, would it cut down on the drying process quicker? Or is drying it too quickly a way of creating more cracks???

Yes to both. The reason I haven't gone with the first thing you said, is that room is such a disaster that it would cost as much to fix and insulate it as it would to build my future kiln. To your second question, I have heard that it is possible to dry too fast, but I'm not sure I understand how one would pull that off. A simple home dehumidifier wouldn't have enough power to do that. It's mostly about water control. Heat and airflow get the moisture out of the wood, but then you need to have a way to get that water out of the room so it doesn't just recirculate.

Thats about as fine of wood working as I get. +/- 1/16” on rough cut lumber 😂 Im kind of surprised it drys that well inside with minimal air flow. I did that once with a birch stack and it grew mushrooms in the stack 😂😂

That garage isn't exactly air tight, and in the hot dry months I keep the windows open so the wind blows straight through.

Just curious why there isn't dehumidification, heat, or other active drying set up? Related to the question, have you watched "The Thoughtful Woodworker" tour of his backyard lumber kiln? Square footage for his building and yours seems relatively similar.

Ever thought of a dehumidifier? Would that be helpful?
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns Күн бұрын
yes... but not in this setup. That "building, is so full of holes it would be like trying to humidify the outside world. I could try to seal it up, but at this point I decided that time and money would be better spend building a kiln in the future.

@GunflintDesigns I see I wasn't the only one that thought of this... I had thought of getting a truck and trailer and doing a sawmill on site for big fallen trees and would either solicit my services for removing the slabs for a lowered cost (since I would sell them or use them) OR... move the slabs to a place on the property of the customer and would charge for my labor....but I don't have a truck, nor trailer, nor huge building to store said slabs...nor do I have a sawmill... But it was a thought I had. 😅🤣😂

With respect to Wagner and you, Govee has a similar sensor, which I have two of an older model, that looks like it does the same exact thing as the Smart Logger, for up to a 1/10 of the price. Is there anything that really stands out for you for the Smart Logger which someone might purchase the Smart Logger over a Govee?
