From Modular Math to Matrices: Understanding the Hill Cipher

Linear Algebra can seem like a daunting subject but in the context of hamburgers and milkshakes it actually makes a lot of sense! Here we explore matrices and modular arithmetic using the Hill Cipher and some clever context problems.
Math The World is dedicated to bringing real world math problems into the classroom and answering the age old question “when will I ever use this?”

I wish every class had a good explanation of matrix multiplication. It is one place in the curriculum where many teachers don't have a good way to help students make sense of the algorithm.

This was a super good simple example on how useful linear algebra is. I will steal this for next time I want people to realize how powerful a tool it is. I used to use x number of equations vs x number of unknowns. I would argue that even x=2 is easier with linear algebra, but I don't think many people would argue that linear algebra is harder for x>4. 🙂
