what a terrible video; asking these questions in such an obtuse manner, almost like they were designed to trip up the average skim reading of the problems. The first example would obviously start with dollar value invested, and end amount, and the 2nd example, whilst a little more obvious that you're not going to get an exact meeting in the middle, is still strange to me; cars aren't joined at the hip, i'd expect a real world question to state the miles driven and gallons used, then calculate MPG for cars 1, 2 and total. overall this feels too self satisfied, too smug with itself. I'm trying to do maths, not play chinese whispers.

I’m pretty sure I proved that if you have A+b=A*a=B, a=B/(B-b),A=b/(a-1),B=ab/(a-1) Both a,b algebraic iff Both A,B algebrapic. One of a,b algebraic implies both A,B transcendental. One of A,B algebraic implies both a,b transcendental. Both A,B transcendental implies One or both of a,b transcendental. Both a,b transcendental implies One or both of A,B transcendental. For example, if you take A=pi, B=e, a= e/pi, b=e-pi at least one is transcendental. Not related to rock skipping or the world, but interesting.

And the sailors of antiquity knew this. They saw it demonstrated regularly. Believing the earth was flat is a myth, or only believed by land lubbers..

This is a good first start at answering your question about the distance to the horizon. But if you really want to be accurate, you must include the effects the atmosphere has on your actual estimations. Start with the section Differential Equation Of Light Rays in Born and Wolf. Your actual answer will be shorter than this analysis.

On a clear day, with good atmospheric conditions and minimal interference, it is possible to have excellent visibility over the ocean, under optimal conditions, you can see up to about 12.2 miles (19.6 km) over the ocean from sea level. This means you would be able to see a wide area and observe any objects or landmarks that are within this distance. However, it's worth noting that the distance can be affected by local weather conditions, so visibility may vary from day to day.

The Isles of Shoals are six (6) statute miles (9.6 km) off the New Hampshire, USA coast and can be seen quite plainly in reasonable detail (can see that are artificial structures). Even poor field glasses show the buildings and topographical features.

I know a guy that is a flat earther that told me he could easily see ships 20 miles away when he worked on oil platforms at sea - which somehow proved the earth was flat to him. The problem oil platforms are actually _really_ high up. Let's assume he is referring to the main top deck, often 120ft above the mean sea level (calm waters) - so not exactly 20 miles (actually 13) but humans suck at estimating distance that far out. However, his field of view could be over 20 miles (actually 27 - adding in the height of the person too) if you count both sides.

I'm kind of glad it isn't taught properly. I feel like students wouldn't learn the point of a mean and would just be following a rule. It's nice to have the misconception so you can recognise why we do it.

On a clear day, from Stonington CT, looking out over the water you can see the Montauk Point, NY, lighthouse, a distance of 17 miles. The top of the lighthouse is 168 feet above sea level so that factors in but that's a big difference from three miles.

If one foot high, you can see 1.22 miles. At 2 * 2 or 4 feet high, you can see 1.22 * 2 or 2.44 miles, and about 4 times as much surface area. At 3 * 3 or 8 feet high, you can see 1.22 * 3 or 3.66 miles, and about 9 times as much surface area. At 10 * 10 or 100 feet high, you can see 1.22 * 10 or 12.2 miles, and about 10 times as much surface area. At 100 * 100 or 10,000 feet high, you can see 122 miles and about 10,000 as much surface area. There are only two mountains on Earth where you 200 miles, in theory, if the mountains were by a seashore. Mount Everest and K2. Of course, it is possible, in theory to see a good deal more than 200 miles, if one is looking from one mountaintop toward another mountaintop at the right distance away, with no blocking terrain. From the Space Station, 250 miles up, one can see about 1,400 miles (very rough calculation).
