That situation with the dog just wandering off-leash like that is EXACTLY why I taught my dog "stick around" as a command. If I'm distracted and give her freedom (Or like... on the ground taking pictures of bugs...) her "stick around" is so that she orbits around me in a circle close enough that I can give a verbal recall, even if I'm moving. With leash-on-hand. I think it's a great skill to have for anyone with an off-leash dog.

I am so grateful for your channel and methods. A stray desert dog wandered into my life two months ago and i both don’t know jack about dogs and wanted to give him a home. I’ve benefited so much from your videos and love the real time, crazy time training you are doing. Especially appreciate the positive approach. I feel very frustrated a lot with training and need these reminders. You are basically training me. :) thanks

I love the way you let your dogs do things imperfectly rewarding them when their behavior improves even a little. Inertia seems to have pretty perfect behavior as a result of your patience and positive attitude. The first day we came home with our rescue puppy we let him in the back yard for a moment alone. He promptly dug his way out of the fence and went around to the front door and scratched at the door to get in with us. After that, I exercised our high energy boy off leash and as often as possible outdoors in fields and woods and stuff where it was far away from risks. He always came when called. Sometimes he just took a while. Now he comes back reliably from woods and in fields and on the sidewalk in front of my house. I think your point about exercise is so important. Rigby is 3 now and a very good boy except when he hasn't had an opportunity to run. He always wants to please but needs his energy burned a bit or he struggles.

Thank you for teaching people to look at things from a dog’s perspective! It’s given me more insight into my dog’s actions and reactions. It’s also helped me to tailor my training to my dog’s particular needs and background. My dog was rescued from an overcrowded puppy mill, so I spent the first year with her focused not on training but on getting her healthy and comfortable with her new surroundings. Your videos reminded me that bonding and helping her gain confidence was going to be the most important thing. And because we took our time, training is much easier! When she was still distrustful, most training would have been ineffective. Thank you for introducing people to a compassionate and patient training method. It has greatly helped many dogs and their people.

Because Bree asked about one person walking multiple dogs together (and I know Zak knows this, but I just want to chime in since it was not explained in this video). When walking multiple dogs together on leash, I first trained each separately to learn to walk well on leash separately. Then, to put them together, I would start with just 2 dogs and have each dog on a 6 foot leash (non-retractable), with all leashes being held in one hand. I of course tell them what direction I want them to go, but the dogs will end up tangling the leashes, pulling in different directions, and as a result they would self correct. After a few walks, they will learn to understand where they need to walk in the group to avoid getting too tangled and they will learn to walk well together. After each dog can walk with one other dog, I would make a group of 3, and so on, to gradually get them accustomed to group walking. That is my method, I am sure there are other methods...

Each of my 5 soon 6 dogs has their own colored leash I prefer 6 ft. 3 in one hand 2 in the other. When I have to untangle it's easy cause I see what dog caused the tangle, I know that dog's colored leash... That's the one to adjust to untangle that's it easy peasy!

I really appreciated how you explained the way you re-asses Inertia and your surroundings each time before deciding to let her off-leash. I think there's often this mystique surrounding professional or otherwise high-level animal trainers -whether it be with dogs, horses, or cats- when they seem to have this almost supernatural connection with, or control over, their animal. Like their animal would never think of running off. But that's never true and it's not a failing on the part or trainers or animals. It's simply a fact that animals have thoughts, feelings, and reactions, they get scared, curious. There's always a chance that the invisible string of connection people weave day in and day out for years and years with their animal could snap. It's a matter of building the best connection and training while paying attention to our animals' emotional states and the contexts in which we are working. It's our job to prepare them, but also to continually look out for them and only put them in risky situations like off-leash play when we've assessed the risk to be low enough in that particular situation

The Nom Nom commercial is a Hoot! My pup is now one year old, September 5th. I started watching your videos 2 years ago, AS we waited for Gracie Aspen's litter to come. She was born in the mountains of Montana. We had the pick of her litter, over YOU TUBE, LOL. She is beautiful & smart. A great pup for 2 folks in our 60s! We love her so much. She does of course, have habits that are proving to be a challenge. She isn't good to meet people, showing fear. She is very sweet and kind, has HIGH energy, but does settle eventually. I don't get to socialize her with people very effectively. Thank you for adding that you are not comfortable about letting a dog under 24 months relieves so much GUILT! I just felt awful I am not confident Gracie would not stop running or stop barking at EVERYTHING, because she is anxious....I do praise her when she settles. Just wanted to say, your videos have been so encouraging for many aspects of Gracie's training. Thank you!!

Zak, in response to your question about the video, I do think the title threw me off too. And it made me think there was nothing relevant in the video for me. But I watched anyway and I loved it and I loved the discussion about walking two dogs on leash (please teach!) and it was great! But to be honest the title made me think I wouldn’t be interested. I’m glad I gave it a go anyway. I think most of us are interested in your training content and it’s still going strong even in this video.

Loved the commercial at the beginning :-) This was a great example of all the ways you need to control the environment and also of socialization. It's helpful seeing training sessions with both dogs present and how you manage a more experienced dog and an untrained puppy together. I also think it was helpful when Bree pretended to give wrong answers to training questions, that are also really common assumptions, and then to hear the better approach.

I still remember when my beautiful little girl dog discovered her growl. She was about 8 months old when this happened! While I was shocked at the possibility that she had never heard herself growl, it was clear that this was a new sound for her. She sat by the couch growling at nothing. She sounded like she was mimicking the sound of a motor revving. It was the cutest thing. The only thing cuter was the morning I taught her to wink. 🥰 Well, then, of course there were all those moments when she ran and jumped into my arms after I simply looked at her and stretched my arms out to catch her. Such beautiful memories with that sweet (to me) adorable little white dog. It's true I think of her as sweet because of the relationship I had with her, but she was tenacious and a very powerful spirit. I believe she was my canine soulmate, that one. I’m watching this after I walked both of my dogs. I’ve been walking them in a neighborhood and an open park, but today we ventured on a narrow hiking trail, with bikes, dogs and people. We made it through safely, but I had to be VERY diligent about my surroundings. I ordered a hands free harness so hopefully I can give them more treats next time, but also have more control.
@murray1white2 жыл бұрын
I have a rescue dog a Jack Russell ,she's 8yo and had never been on a lead . Trained her on leash to start feeding treats everytime she looked at me. The treats were about the size of my thumb. 2 weeks later after walking around 5miles per day , we started on off leash walking , on quiet streets to start, but now even in heavy traffic areas she ranges 50 yd in front to 50 yds behind. At interesections , a stand , we look for traffic ,and a lets go , break as we get back on footpath.Works well we now doing up to 10miles per day , seldom on lead even in town with pedestrians . AS regards barking , find that all is needed is reassurance that all is well .A big cuddle ," its ok " and she quiets down real quick Being a female JRT she is not going to back down , leart to always have the harnes on , if she is sniffed , great for a few moments , then can turn to custard rapidly. So no long introductions to ohter dogs , a quick snif , and " come on Milly " are off .If we hang around too long ,a likely confrontation is likely . This is where the harness is great . Straight into the mix , uplift Mill and remove from area . Never any real agression , all noise etc ,and often its with young dogs , that weren't obeying doggy etique Just my observations on training of around 8months of off lead walking.

I like the comment on socializing 5-7 month old puppies more so than working on proper leash walking. It really helps create a much calmer dog in the long run. It's kind of like how parents of 5-7 year old kids will sometimes say that they need to make their own mistakes to learn.

My dog Maya is pretty bark-happy as well. I, too, found the best strategy to stop barking is to ask her to perform some kind of task. It seems much harder just to NOT do something than to simply do something else. Furthermore, if Maya does that task well, she earns a high level reward and hopefully starts to develop positive associations. Many situations became pretty easy to handle that way. The downside is that she keeps barking quite intensely when I am not in a situation to give her that task. I even have the impression that Maya takes charge as soon as she understands that I am incapacitated, for example, when I am in the bathroom. Then she reacts violently to every little sound from the neighborhood. It might have to do with her being blind since birth, but I am still at a loss how to calm her then. Simply talking to her through the closed or even open door has not done the trick so far. On the one hand, I am willing to accept this as normal behavior. On the other hand, we live in a noise sensitive environment and I would like us to be more considerate to our neighbors' wish for calmness.

I have a 4 month old Lab, and I'm not too strict yet on leash either. I want him to get his sniffing in on our walk. He'll have good sessions of heel, and other times he's in front of me. I ask him not to pull the leash, but otherwise I let him explore. For the most part it's working out.

Yeah, the episode was way better than the clickbait thumbnail/title suggested. Especially since there have been episodes in the past that have been a bit hectic, the thumbnail didn't lead to believe there'd be this nice calm flow to the episode that your commentary throughout lends to it.

I've followed a lot of ur tips, and also training classes and I'm really proud to say that my dog comes when called 90% of the time hehe we will continue training everyday, a little bit at a time. I'm also having problems with barking but I agree that I should let her express and she is trying to warn me of something she finds frightening. I let her bark a little and then call her, when she comes and remains silent she earns a treat. I hope it works !

Yeah, I have a high energy ex-hunting dog 5yr old with abuse/reactive issues; and now trying to train a hyper 12week old puppy also hunting breed; and no choice but to walk them together by myself, in high density urban area. It's absolutely nuts and yes, arms/back so sore. But I am getting some really lovely "heel" time after a few weeks of training, with chaos at times, when we come in contact with dogs and all the rubbish/food left on the streets being a constant temptation. But man, some days I want to come home and cry.

I really like the letting her go and explore and then taking opportunities to call her to come to you - next puppy I get I will be doing that. We did that with an adult Jack Russell when we had a 100 acre farm - he was never leashed but 4 months of doing that and he always came when he was called off leash or on.

I disagree with keeping dogs on leash until 2!haha I follow Sarah Stremming's advice for off-leash! :) I listen to her podcast, CogDog Radio, and have done since before getting my working-line border collie. I prioritize off-leash exercise with my dog! I had her off leash or dragging her leash since day one. When you start early, you actually help stack the cards in your favour because they naturally want to be with you when they're young. It takes a lot of trust of course, and I do my best to set her up for success. We work on recall every day, and now that Molly is 14 months, I can walk her off-leash even in the city! (mind you, this has taken time, and I reinforce her for paying attention to me; she's also a BC so she cares more about me than other dogs or people!lol) I always have reinforcement on me, of course, but building that trust off-leash from a young age really helped. Now she's just used to it. She won't run away if I bring the leash out because the leash for her doesn't = the end of fun. I'll clip it on and off throughout our walk (we have lots of dog-safe alleyways in my neighbourhood that I let her roam free on). Filling their cup for off-leash decompression is SUPER important for all dogs, especially high-energy breeds. Fetch is ok for building stamina (or the last resort for I just don't have time to give her a longer walk), but it's just not the same as a decompression walk (a walk in nature, low dog and people traffic, quiet space where dogs can safely roam and express their dog-ness! :) ). Of course, I keep her on leash around other dogs, and I let her off when I know there aren't reactive dogs around (I also have a solid recall on her of course ;) ). I'd love to hear your take on this! Have you heard of decompression walks? Do you do them with your dogs? I know in the US you guys have things like SniffSpot. Have you ever tried to use it? Do you give your dogs off-leash time every day or every few days?

I love how you let the dogs encounter the world without forcing them to behave a certain way when they see something new for the first time. I find I tense up when I meet other dogs when I am walking dogs, mostly because I think I know how they are going to react. Do you have any suggestions for how I can keep myself calm and relaxed so the dogs I am walking don't pick up on my tension and also become tense and then react because of it?

Omg. Rando off leash dogs. We were getting our oil changed and the place was like oh dogs are welcome in the waiting room. Awesome…but then there is a “local man and his dog”…very large dog…who “like to hang out” at this oil change place…and that very large and muscular dog is not on a leash. We were outside, walking to a rural king which was next door with our dog, because we weren’t comfortable with the situation when this off leash dog trots up to my dog ! Luckily I have my dog in a harness, on a leash, and he is a 9.5lb poodle. So I just lifted him by his handle on his harness and had him in my arms in a second. That dog had a friendly tail wagging body posture but his jaws could snap my poodle in half…and he had little to no recall to his owner…neither does my dog when he is excited…which is why my dog stays on leash. 😉

Hey, Zak. I just wanted you to know that about 6 years ago, when I decided that I wanted to adopt a puppy, I started watching dog-training videos here on KZbin just to get a clue. When I found your videos, I just had a sense that you really know what you're doing, in a loving yet firm way. A month or two later I walked into a shelter in FL, and immediately saw a little Pit/Boxer mix peeing on the floor right before going for her bowl of dinner. She wriggled up to me in the most adorable way, and I adopted her then. She is NOT one of those really chill-type Golden Retrievers/Labs---she still tends to go bananas when she sees other dogs (usually because she wants to play, but sometimes because some tiny dog starts barking things about my dog's Momma, and getting in her face, and she gets pissed off). But your videos were the biggest asset I had while training her as a 3-4- month-old puppy--she's now about 6 1/2 years old, and her best behaviors are the result of training I did after learning from your videos. She will never be a "calm" dog, but she is just wonderful, and continues to remember all of the things I learned to train her to do from watching your videos back then. I'd be a nervous wreck trying to travel as you guys are with her (we did make it from FL to NJ without any disasters!), but you made all the difference in how I was able to train her, with the right attitude, to do the important essentials, which she still remembers. So thank you very much.

Interesting that your first choice is to pick your dog up when rushed by an unknown dog. I sometimes do this, but usually to help my small dog feel safer when she's overwhelmed. The reason it isn't my first choice is that I've seen it cause the unknown dog to jump up to try and get to the dog in the person's arms, on more than a couple of occasions. On these occasions the dog wasn't aggressive just excited, but it does make me wonder what could happen if the dog was aggressive. Obviously I'm taking note of body language of any dog that approaches (we have off lead beaches here), in a rushing situation my first action is to put my body in between the rushing dog and mine and attempt to get the dog's attention and calm them a bit. On the one occasion that a dog had predatory body language towards my small puppy he ended up crashing straight into my leg that blocked him and fortunately his humans were very quick to get him under control and put him on lead. It's hard to know what would have happened if his humans weren't nearby and had some ability to control him. I certainly don't have a perfect solution, but I thought I would express my observations and experience on this. In the end, I think we all use our instincts in the moment.

Omg I am so happy you said that socialization trumps proper dog walking at age 4 or 5 months...my 4 month old Toy Aussiedoodle has started puppy classes (now that the new thinking is starting really early prior to being fully vaccinated is more important than waiting) and my puppy is doing amazing in the house, but outside he is just so curious and stimulated that walking is NOT even close to happening....I either end up getting really frustrated or just stop trying (which makes for a much better time)...we are working in no jumping, which is hard when the kids like his bunny jumps, and leave it and of course 'come' which he is getting very good at, even if he comes, sits and then immediately goes back to what he was doing ( outside only - inside he is doing great). I am just so happy that I can train walking in the halls indoors and then focus on letting him explore the world outside right now....I am absolutely loving your videos, both with Inertia and Veronica and of course I have your book...thanks!

We went for a long walk today and she experienced getting into the river, meeting and greeting new people and other dogs which I thought was good for socializing as she's an American Pitbull XL. Trying to show others how the breed can be friendly and affectionate. All around we had alot of positive responses. It was refreshing to see you in Liberal, Kansas as we lived there before moving to Wyoming in 1980. Made many trips back and it still looks the same. Thanks for sharing your ideas. You're a cute 💑 and I've watched quite a few of your videos. 🙏 🙏 🙏 ❤. Safe trip.

Never allow a dog or puppy to pull on a leash. If they pull stop wait and when they stop pulling continue walking.

I love your technique. My dog has started to bark at nothing (use to have a reason like a car or person etc) and then he stops and walks over to me or comes and sits in front of me barking - He's looking for a treat for when he stops barking. ughhh and lol

My Millie would not care one bit about treats or fetch in a new place. She is the most curious dog about her environment than I have ever had!

I took my 5 month old chocolate lab puppy on a road trip. I’m trying to expose her to different situations and people. We were sitting at a picnic table minding our own business. Two little boys walked towards us. Maybe 5 and 3 years old. Parents are oblivious. The boys started to bark at her. She barked back. In 3 seconds my pup was feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Me and a bystander told the boys to stop. They didn’t. I was petting my pup telling her she was good because she didn’t go towards the kids. Boys weren’t going to stop so I told my pup we were leaving. She obeyed and we got out of there. What should I have done differently?

I think in your next series you should train a cat. Just because if anyone could you could. I have done some mild training with mine. And my boyfriends foster but one day I want to train and socialize a cat like you would dog

Some of us have neighbours who we want to be considerate of. . and council by laws which can confiscate a dog if they generate too many noise complaints so just 'let them bark' isn't helpful advice

So later in the video that dog that ran up on you guys reminded me about a couple weeks ago I was at a truck stop playing with my dog kinda out in the open in the grass and I hear this lady yelling at her dogs and I turn around and there is a great dane and bull mastiff charging me and my 7 month old malinois and i picked my dog up and was ready to get mauled but the dogs turned out to be super friendly and well behaved and they just got excited to see my dog with her ball

Picking up your dog is one of the worst things to do. If the dog aggresses then you've just made you and your dog a target.
@lilsprout2 жыл бұрын
@@fraxinus_ash well, if it’s a small dog or a puppy, they are defenseless! I think it depends on the owner, the dogs, and the situation. Ideally, I would scoop my 70lb dog up to prevent injury. But if there wasn’t time or the dog was especially aggressive, I wouldn’t be able to hold onto him anyway, and unfortunately, I know my dog can fend for himself. But if I was with my friend’s 60lb dog, I 100% would scoop him and protect him the best I could because he is so submissive, he could get really hurt. In that case, yeah maybe I would be a target, but he has a better chance at survival.
@fraxinus_ash2 жыл бұрын
@@lilsprout Most dogs won't approach wanting to fight and imho you should never put your own safety at risk for the sake of the dog. I enjoy the use of my arms and hands, and value my life. Picking a dog up makes it waaay more exciting than if you leave it down to communicate with the other dog. Chances are an approaching dog won't aggress but if it does the best thing to do is wheelbarrow it by its back legs to keep your hands out of harm's way.

I was on a walk and picked up my dog when a neighbor's dog, who I didnt know, who lives about a block away from me, came out at us. She kept insisting I put my dog down while she chased her dog around. I politely told her I was not willing to take that risk. You never know what another dog is like. She may have been offended at first, but after she corralled her dog, I explained that my husband's grandmother's dog was attacked and killed by an off leash dog a few months prior. You never know how a dog may react.

Do you have any advice for yourself? Zak - Goood luck!! When one of mine stops to sniff, the other one is pulling forward. Then the one gets done sniffing, and the other one realizes they're missing out on good sniffs and they trade places.

So I got a puppy and I’m new to the dog world. Once she is fully vaccinated will go on walks around the neighborhood. The thing is, that around my area there are a lot of stray dogs. How should I address walking her with these unleashed dogs right outside our apartment?

I have a questuon: are you using flexilead?? That is something that at least a rescue owner should avoid. I have 2 shy rescues and if a flexilead was to fall of my hand my dogs would propably run until they couldn't run no more or be hit by a car . So no to that. Otherwise wonderful epidsode and I hope tou are having a blast.
@parkerbrown-nesbit17472 жыл бұрын
I've used a flexilead with every dog I've owned since 2002. I've been very fortunate that all of my dogs have been wonderful on leash and stay quite close to me anyway. Each of them have stayed right by my side even when the leash was dropped.

Veronicas breed mix is still making me curious. I know a Border Collie Akita Inu mix which comes pretty close to her appereance. The ears, tail tip and whithe socks could be border collie, and the rest some kind of Spitz. Plus something for the long legs maybe.

Yes good luck. I walk 3 dogs together and yes the feed bad off each other. Ages 1 yr 3 months-male, two females 9 yrs and 2 yrs old. The 2 yr old fractured my wrist pulling and the three of them I think did something to my right pinky finger.

I like the series and idea, but it's feeling a little disorganized when watching. Like i can sort of follow along, but, it's like following along a reality show more than an educational show. Not sure if that makes sense. That said, I'll probably keep watching as I'd want to keep supporting the channel

Finally - walking 2 dogs at once. What about when they start sparing with each other?
@k9mutttraining2 жыл бұрын
OK--- I got to say one thing-- please please please tell people that you can have them on the long lead because like you said you were virtually alone. I get so many folks that allow their dog to go way out from them on the retractable leash and then some kiddo or another dog comes and a fight or kid hurt happens. Especially folks with little dogs tend to want to blame everyone but themselves if something bad happens.
