This movie got a bit of slack when it released, but thankfully time has been kind to it over the years and as is often the case has become an underrated gem. Maybe we’ll get another adaptation in the form of a series someday.

It’s so often hated because it’s a poor book adaptation, probably because it’s multiple books crammed into one movie. Multiple of the characters had certain aspects changed, for example, Twilight didn’t do that song thing he does in the movie series, he did battle chants. Which were only, you know, in battle. I can sort-of understand where combining St.Auggies and The Pure Ones came from seeing as they did have a semi team-up in one of the books. Honestly the thing that annoys me the most is Kludd. Better, I don’t know *why* they separated Kludd and Metal-beak, as they were the same character in the books, and there was no real reason to change that. Also In the books Klud didn’t go to St.Auggies with Soren, he just yeeted Soren out of the next and joined the Pure ones on his own time.

And Eglantine is still a kid in the movie. Adaptation, things have to be changed. Lord of the Rings are phenomenal movies, even if they depart from the books, same with this (honestly, LOTR couldn't have made the time between Bilbo's party and Frodo's travels 20 years like it was in the books, and thsi movie couldn't take place over the same amount of time the books do, thus some characters have to change a bit
@lowgunfire2671

The movie lacked a lot of character development, cut out a lot of cool characters from the books, and of the characters and story that stayed, they were nerfed to hell. Soren was a crappy leader in the movie. And he fell into a completely out-of-the-blue romance with Otulissa. Gylfie was robbed of her brains. And was turned into semi-comic relief. One of the biggest insults, as already mentioned before, was Twilight and Digger being middle-aged adult owls as opposed to kids like Soren and Gylfie. Digger is even supposed to be the youngest member of the main four, and is supposed to be the owl version of Piglet, but he became fricking comic relief in a movie already chock full of it. As for Otulissa, there was no owl who played the role of the straight man to her arrogance, unlike in the books. Gylfie's sharp tongue was nerfed, as mentioned earlier, Twilight and Digger were too busy pestering each other to straighten Otulissa out, Soren was in fricking love with her, and Martin was non-existent. The traitor subplot changed Dewlap into a boring male called Allomere who betrayed the Guardians out of greed rather than trying to bargain with the Pure Ones for peace. The Pure Ones and St Aegolius were merged into one faction, which cut out a lot of story potential for what could have been a grand movie trilogy. Honestly, elements from the first 4 books were already mostly used up in the movie - without much of the books' substance - leaving only very few plot threads to wrap up, which wouldn't warrant a quality sequel or trilogy. TL;DR = The Books were great, the movie was not.
@girlnugget293
@girlnugget293 6 жыл бұрын
Dont get me wrong the movie was great but it cut off around 90% of the story in the books ranging from chamging characters personalities (or making a character fall in love with a character that in the books he hated for a good portion of the book where she was introduced) to removing characters and missing most of the original plot

For the ones asking about sequel, the wiki says: "According to Animal Logic's CEO, Zareh Nalbandian, there have been discussions for a sequel to Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, but nothing solid as to when production would begin, as such a sequel would come in behind several other films Animal Logic will be producing or already is producing with Warner Bros. Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten have both said in an interview that they would reprise their roles as Soren and Kludd if a sequel ever entered production." I liked how you talked about this, I was one of those kids who's never read the books so I got an outsiders perspective and I liked it. I didn't know there even was a book series until after the fact. Just because the movie adaption isn't exactly the same as the books, dosen't mean you discourage others who haven't watched it. The majority of people haven't read or known about the books for different reasons and since this came out in theaters worldwide (NOT just in America) then you should take in consideration that alot of human beings are gonna have a different view when debating this (and other movies) objectively.

Wow! This was great! A detailed and respectful analysis of both the books and movie! I loved this series as a kid! I would skip prologues and epilogue back then as I thought they were authors notes at the time, and I was impatient to get into the book. I later realized my mistake. I liked this movie, although I did notice the changes, like the St. Egg's and Pure Ones merger. Just missed many of them as a result of how much time had passed since I'd read them. I really enjoyed your video! You've got yourself a new subscriber! I've got to re-read these books and that wolves series.

A couple years late for me to watch it, but this was lovely to see! I really enjoyed the books with all of their lore and the dark tone. I enjoy the movie as a separate thing; it took the concepts and other things from the books to make its own story, or at the very least, reshape it into something that's more kid friendly. I don't think cannibal owls would have gone over well at cinemas.

Here's an idea of the Guardians of Ga Hoole, instead of having it as a movie, why not have it as a show just like what Netflix did in A series of unfortunate events. I mean there are 31 books if you are including the spin-offs and companion books. I think people will like it better if it was a show instead of a movie.

Maybe I should rewatch it then, I remember being really upset as a kid after watching it and thinking they just completely messed up the source material. I've always thought of it as a different world altogether and avoided everything related to it (except the wii game cuz you could fly owls which is a banger). To be fair, it was probably the first ever movie I watched after reading the source material and I did not know directors change stuff when they do that. I've read the books twice (and some of the wolf spin-offs) and it really felt like being betrayed at the time.

I think you would enjoy looking at "Howl's moving castle". There is a really interesting divide between book and movie fans and the author herself had a really interesting way of looking at the movie adaptation. Not to mention that both the author and the head of the animation studeo had lived through WW2 as kids and used their respective careres as a way to cope with that trauma but did so in completely diffrent ways. One created a world where kids could escape the horors of war and the other making sure to show just how horible war was.

I just want to say THANK YOU for that rap of Twilight's battle song. I've always read his battle taunt songs as raps. And I really kinda . . . HATED what they did to Twilight and Digger in the movie. Especially Twilight. So much so that I was completely taken out of my enjoyment of the rest of the film. Sure, I was . . . annoyed that they mixed St. Aggie's and The Pure Ones in the movie, but, hey, it's a movie! And it's compressing three of the books into one story. It was a reasonable annoyance and one I could live with. But I could not get over what they did to Twilight and Digger. Now, I won't say I HATE the movie (like I used to), but . . . I don't think it's by any means a masterpiece. Does it have great animation? Of COURSE it does! The animation is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! However, I still can't really get over the character assassinations of Twilight and Digger to enjoy the film. I read the books first, and I find The Band more compelling there. But I do agree with you; Lasky only using not EVEN a page to describe Soren and Pellimore's relationship and how they met really bugs me. So much so that when I was still writing fanfiction, I tried to tackle what was left 'offscreen'. Er . . . I should have quit when I was ahead with that story. It would have been better that way. XP I always meant to finish it but . . . I started college, moved out of my house and . . . my books are still back there. And I'd hate to go back to writing that story and . . . not have the characters fresh in my mind. Got distracted - On your view of the movie, I think you're right to rip up that newspaper article. That headline was ridiculous. XP I may not love the movie, but it's not a Star Wars rip off by any stretch of the imagination. (Okay, maybe a DETERMINED stretch of imagination, but come on.) And I may not like the movie, but I don't think it's terrible by any means. Heck the only real thing that kept pulling me out of my immersive state was movie Twilight's . . . "battle songs" . . . If I could make the quotes bigger, I WOULD. Everything else? Honestly, not bad for a book to film adaptation. Certainly better than . . . some . . . OTHER . . . franchises I could mention . . . I think the movie is a great introduction to the franchise. Have a friend who isn't much of a reader but want to share this story with them? Show them the movie. It'll have some differences, but maybe it'll get them interested enough to give the books a shot. Or, at least it'll give you something to talk about that they can follow along with. The books I'd recommend as a definite 'buy . . . if you can afford it' rating, while I'd put the movie on a 'rent/stream on hulu/netflix/amazon and watch with friends/family' level. In closing, I enjoyed your video and I feel you made some very good points comparing the book to the film. I feel your judgement in favor of the book was fair, but also agree that the movie was rather . . . sabotaged and got a worse rap than it really should have. It was harmless, beautifully animated, fun. And more people should really know about this franchise, so thank you for doing this video in the first place.

13:00 the problem with that is that in the books the story of Lyze of Kiel had nothing to do with the Guardians, he was a warrior owl of the northern kingdoms and was kinda like the Erwin Rommel of his faction of Rommel had been with the Allies, and before anyone says that “oh at the end of the story he went to the tree” Yeah, I know, he later became Ezylryb, but no version of the story besides the movie version (which didn’t even state it outright) mentions how he went to the tree since in canon no one knew until book 3 that Ezylryb and Lyze were the same owl besides Octavia, his nest maid snake, and some other people who knew him from before he went to the tree and became a scholar, no version of the story besides the book “Rise of a Legend” (which came out two years after this video if I remember) mentions him going to the tree, so the film makers kinda screwed up in making the story of Lyze of Kiel be a story about the Guardians Of Ga’Hoole

It's the writer who decide it. You need to remember, they need to cramped 3 books in 90 minutes movie. It's impossible task to do 100% like books unless they slim everything down and make it dumb down basic story. They didn't even know this movie will got sequel or not. Unless they make it series which has plenty of time to do 100% adaptation from books.

I enjoy the movie, despite the changes. Sure, some were a bit weird, like making Digger a comedic relief, but hey, kids movie. Most of them seem to make sense for a movie. Shortening down the time the story took place over made it a bit easier to follow, since movies can't easily show stories taking place over long time the same way a book can, and the merging of St. Aggie's and Pure Ones made it a bit easier to follow

Honestly, this is such a good comparison, it's been an extremely long time since I read the book series but I distinctly remember how utterly absorbed and fascinated I was by them. And although the movie is just an extremely condensed version of the books (not including the numerous story arcs that were left out) it's still really good. Also, one difference that I thought was pretty significant was the fact that the flecks power in the movie was cut off because the fire burned through the winch causing the container to close whereas in the books they are disabled because of heat itself (unless I'm misremembering).

I was so darn pissed when they cut Hortense and the eagles. I think a TV show would be a lot better. Or a Wolves Of The Beyond movie. That would be great. Yes, stuff would need to be cut, but you could easily put the first two/three movies together. I would LOVE to see Faolan growing up with Thunderheart and learning to yknow live (easy montage) then seeing Faolan lose Thunderheart and find the rest of the wolves (probably with a slightly more pg outclanners) Seeing all the characters in the 3D style would be epic and mm, that Faolan jumping the wall of fire would be AWESOME. After that you can show Faolan solving the malcadah’s murder and working through the gaddergnaw. I realized that if I would want to see the Sark and Gwenyth that it would be smarter to just use the first two books. Either way, you could squeeze three lovely movies out of the books.

I remember seeing an ad for this movie in the street while I was in the backseat of my mother's car. I was around 15 and was in the middle of binge reading the whole Ga'Hoole book series. It is to this day the best series of kids novels I've ever read. I went on to watch the movie very excited and I was very disappointed, it had good visuals though. The only real upside is that it must've brought many new readers to the book series, and it gave us a fun video game on the wii that I enjoyed cuz you could fly an owl and that was all I ever asked.

Ya know, I read just about all the books and the movie and I love this video but you did miss something about Soren asking Eglantine what happened to her in the books. the reason he waited to ask was because, after Eglantine came to she didn't remember what really happened until they removed the other piece of glass and that was when she remember being kidnapped by the Pure Ones and forced to sleep in a stone room filled with bones, being "stone stunned". Also if we were to get a possible sequel, I'd love to see some hagsfiends and the truth When Nyra transforms into a hagsfiend. Would love to see that. Sadly it'd be too early in the story to see Coryn and the wolves.

8:00 nope, he lost them to Jatt and Jutt from St. Aggies, NOT the Pure Ones. The Pure Ones came in MUCH later, and weren't the main strife until being talked about after Ezylryb's disappearance and finding Eglantine if i'm not mistaken.

Otherwise I really liked the movie, it was nice for people that read the books but made a new story with some weird choices that I wish they didnt. Even if this is an old vid I wanna give my take on the story changes. While i adore how books tell their story with the much detail that movies cant due to time i am reading the books now and find that i would have been much more invested had we seen some things the movie changed. I saw the movie well before i ever got my hands on the books so was expecting it to be more similar, mostly how they did Kludds character. I adored his arc in the movie and when i got the books was whole expecting to see his growth of being manipulated and groomed to fit a pure one top soldier while soran was trying to save him, not believing his dear brother turned evil It was cool to see the more favored roles in the pure ones vs the bad conditions soran and gilfie had. While im only almost done on the first book now i was sill incredibly disappointed with kludd at the begining to being always a "bad egg" i wanted to see that fall from grace Its kinda like how when I watched Coraline i loved wybie and got the book just to read about him only to find he wasnt even there. Lovely book no matter what but disappointed the things i loved about the movies proved to not exist in the books

@@alexischavez7086 I don't know, I really liked in the books how little we knew about Kludd. Kludd is doing his own things and growing apart, fueled by the pure blood owls. One day you don't realize how but he turns on you and you don't have an explanation for it. And maybe you didn't get that because you were "spoiled" by the movie, but at first you don't know that Kludd is fully evil, Soren is lost and wants to find his family. It is only later that you know for certain that Kludd was with the enemy all along. It's mostly through Soren eyes that we see the world, and unfortunately he did not get to know his brother very well before he was radicalised. On so many levels Ga'Hoole is a tragedy and explores very dark and somber themes which is very original for a kids book series. I feel like Kludd is more threatening in the books, kind of how Darth Vader was before the prequels was released and you realise he's a whiny boy. More one-dimensional but you don't always know everything about the villains.

Daymares make sense to me since owls are active during the night and sleep during the day. Beautiful movie scenes and I didn't know it was in 3D. As a kid living in a large family we didn't often go to the theater since movie tickets are expensive and when you're a family of eight it just makes it even more expensive. This was one of my favorite book series. I was really hyped for the movie. It looked gorgeous, but they butchered and genericized the story so much. I'm sorry but the choices they made to the story made it so weak. I get that they probably wanted to get to the part in the story where they reach the tree, but I honestly think Hey should have adapted the first 2 books and stopped when they got to the tree. Left the amazing guardian and fight for a 2 movie if it were to happen. They could have done the books justice, had that dark edge the books had, really suck you in with the constant danger, but nope that's what they did. I remember the St Aegis orphanage being terrifying as a kid. The indoctrination of the baby owls, the creepy bloodletting from the bats, the danger of the journey to the tree. Also poor digger. He was kind of the Michelangelo of the group. By that I mean he wasn't book smart like Glyfie, but introspective and intuition. He wasn't one note comic relief. Also holy shit his family was cannibalized. That happened. I get they didn't want to put that in a movie, but I kind of think that really shows the terror of the St Aegis Owls. Also nitpick, but I really wish they didn't given Soren irises. Barn owls have pure black eyes to the point some people are scared of Soren. I know it was probably for marketing to make him look more natural and appealing to viewers, but one thing I really liked about the books was it was trying to be educational too about owls. Sort of took it out of the movie.

@@robertcooper4th259 I think the books are directed at preteens and teens, not family audiences. However, series that are originally intended for more mature audiences are often adapted to appeal to all ages, because it can rack in more money and reduce the chances of angry parents complaining about themes in the movie. Honestly, it would make more sense to have a game adaptation, because then you could fit all the lore into a longer time span. Games can appeal to all audiences and don't have to conform to the same standards as a movie. Even if all the themes were kept in the movie, Guardians of Ga'Hoole just can't be condensed into an hour and a half.
